Late at night, after having a bath, Mirei knocked on the door and went inside.
She was in her pajamas.
“Haru-kun, we need to talk about that matter…”
“Yeah, I know.”
She must be thinking about the discussion I had with her editor. It was only natural for her to be curious, and I was about to approach her myself.
At this time of the night, Miyuha was probably studying while listening to classical music on her headphones. Now was the perfect time to have a confidential talk.
I steeled myself.
“Yes, I want to know about the girl you’ve been seeing, Haru-kun.”
“Wait… why that? Shouldn’t there be more important matters to talk about?”
“It’s the only topic that matters!”
“No, I’m sure there are plenty.”
“No! Don’t you dare change the subject!”
“You’re out of your mind, Mom…”
I scratches my head and ask,
“What about your debut as a writer?”
“Oh, yeah… Of course I haven’t forgotten about that.”
“I know you did…”
“Uuuh.”
Mirei puffed her cheeks like a little girl. She has a delicate baby face, but if you know that she is a mother of two children, you will have a different perspective.
“After school I met with Hanagaki-san in person and talked to her.”
“In person…? I thought she’d call you.”
“She was waiting for me in front of the school gate, and after I got a call, she grabbed and shoved me in her car… I thought I was about to be kidnapped.”
“Oh no, kidnapping Haru-kun? I’m jealous…”
“Oi, what did you just say?”
“I mean…”
Mirei cleared her throat.
“Haru-kun is mine and mine alone. No one else can have him.”(E/N: Wow the boldness of words,)
“That’s wrong too, though.”
“I can’ t allow my child to be held captive. Let me go to the editorial office now to find out what’s going on.”
“Stop it, you monster parent. Sit back down. This isn’t a school. I mean, it’s unheard of for a mother to storm into an editorial office.”
If she did, I would be laughing stock then.
“But I can’t accept the idea of a complete stranger spending time alone with you, Haru-kun.”
“I don’t think that’s where you should be angry. Wait, that’s the only part you’re angry about aren’t you?”
You should be angry about your son’s kidnapping.
“Because Hanagaki Kamome-san is a woman. When she first called me, her voice was clearly that of a woman. From the sound of her voice, I can say she must be a mature woman with a lot of sex appeal. There must be a reason for her to kidnap Haru-kun.”
“Don’t be so damn delusional.”
I waved my hand like swatting a fly.
“Let’s get serious, okay? Anyway, what’s important is your schedule for the future. I’m sure you’ve got an email with the details. First of all, you have received an email about the paperwork for the prize money transfer and other things, so make sure you answer it correctly.”
“Yes.”
“Next, they’ll contact us about revisions. I’ve heard that some prize-winning works need to be rewritten more than halfway through, while yours doesn’t need that much. According to Hanagaki-san.”
I explained the revision points in brief. However, they were only minor things that could be changed. But if I had to revise the root of the character and the story, it would be so hard that I wouldn’t have time to sleep.
“Hanagaki-san will teach us everything we need to know until it’s published, because we’re new at this. But the more of a problem is when we handle things wrong. If we don’t share information, there will be inconsistencies and Hanagaki-san will get suspicious. We have to stay in contact.”
“Got it. Meaning, from now on, I will be able to talk to Haru-kun every day!”
“Keep it to a minimum, please.”
I coldly brushed her off and moved on to the next topic.
“And then there’s the award ceremony.”
It will be held in about a week. I heard that not only the entire editorial department, but also senior writers and the bigwigs from the publishing company will be there. Thinking about it makes my stomach churn, but… It can’t be helped.
“I’ll have to get a new suit for Haru-kun. When was the last time you wore a suit? Probably in grade school? Or was it a kindergarten play party? Miyuha won many prizes, so she had to get new suits and dresses every time, but Haru-kun’s…”
Oh, she quickly held her mouth awkwardly.
“No, too late. I never had to wear a formal dress in my life! Sorry about that! Sorry for being such a bad son! Besides, it’s not even my fault this time! I can go with the school uniform! That’ll be fine I suppose.”
“No, you can’t, Haru-kun. You have to wear formal wear. This is your first time on the big stage!”
“Or, this may be the last time you’ll see me on stage!”
“Don’t worry, Haru-kun, it will be fine! If you want, your mom will apply for lots of contests and win them all over again!”
“The purpose has changed, you know. What’s the point of winning if I don’t do it myself?”
I was supposed to be angry at her, but got hit with a boomerang. Yes, if I don’t win the award on my own, it’s meaningless. Dammit.
That day, I spent the entire night writing my manuscript.
Why? Because I enjoy writing. I was having so much fun that I found myself up in the morning. Naturally, if you do that, your body will be a wreck. I was so sleep deprived that I started to feel nauseous.
And guess what I am suffering from writer’s block.
My school teacher would have told me that it’s good to have something you’re passionate about.
“Heck… I bet I’ll become a writer on my own someday…!”
I dive into bed and close my eyes, feeling tired.
An image of the most beautiful girl in the school, Rinka Takigami, came to my mind.
Yes, one day I will become a writer on my own, and I will….
Surely I will confess my feelings to Rinka, and we will go out…
If she says yes, that is, well then… zzz…
