When I Reincarnated, I Became Even More of a Gorilla - 29
I had survived the martial arts class, and now I was spending my free time in my room at Elena’s dorm room.
The day after I left that martial arts class with Elena, I ended up reluctantly staying here because when Elena went to class the next day, she left me behind here. Well, it’s not like my movements were restricted, so I’m not really inconvenienced, but the custom of having the familiars stay quietly every time the master has a class that the familiars can’t attend is a bit annoying.
[Oog, oogogo oogo. (Since I’ve got free time, I might as well study writing.)]
I mutter to myself and take out the book for writing practice that Father, Frontier Count Gladysbalt, gave me from Elena’s luggage. With how my convenient bag is filled with lots of monster materials and that bear’s body, I hesitated to put the book inside it.
Come to think of it, I wonder what I should do to process this bear into my clothes. I might go on the next day off. I want to have the other materials processed as well, and it seems like the Adventurers’ Guild buys them, so I’d like to go check it out. Let’s ask Elena about it later.
But for now, I need to learn how to write. If I can handle words and letters, I will have a wider range of activities while Elena is taking her classes by herself. Fortunately, if I’m wearing the collar sold by the school like I’m currently wearing, people will know that I’m someone’s familiar and will not be seen as a danger.
I open the book and immediately start learning the letters. The book I picked up in the forest before was apparently for young ladies like Elena, a feminine writing style, and I want to correct that.
If a male gorilla like me were to refer to myself with “watakushi”, people would just think of me as a little creepy, wouldn’t you? At least, I would think of myself as such.
I opened the book titled “Studying Words and Letters for Gentlemen” and reading through the table of contents, I flipped through the parts I had already memorized as a review.
[Oogogo oog, oogo. Oogogo. (This reads wolf, and this one…… means “to greet”.)]
To be honest, I think it’s important for me to be selective with what I’m studying since the list includes words that I’m not even sure where I’d use them, but there would sometimes be particle words suddenly included, so I can’t just carelessly skip over them.
This seems to be due to the fact that the printing technology of this world is only a little above the medieval level, and even though it’s possible to print more copies, editing them would be very expensive.
As I continued to practice writing, I finally finished reviewing what I had been practicing before and started practicing new words.
This book primarily follows a learning style that combines pictures and text for memorization. I analyzed what exactly each picture was trying to depict one by one while memorizing the text. Then, while talking with Elena, I would try to confirm the words I’ve learned with her, thus accumulating knowledge.
Of course, since it’s based on pictures, there’s always a chance I’d misunderstand what the book was trying to mean. Therefore, I keep in mind while memorizing that what I’m reading is “probably so”.
Today, the first new word, from what I see in the picture, probably means male. From the hairstyle of the person in the picture, this most likely is a guy. However, I feel like what’s written here isn’t just that.
The male figure is holding a sword and wearing armor. However, the armor doesn’t appear to be metallic, so it might be leather armor, similar to what I occasionally see in the forest.
Furthermore, the man seems to be wearing a bag on his waist belt, which indicates that he’s carrying something in it.
From this, I can infer that the man is an adventurer, so this word here should mean “Adventurer”.
The next one…… could this be a stick? There’s no particular decoration on it, but looking closely, I can see a bulging section in the middle of the stick. Based on that, I could infer that it’s a spear, but calling it a spear also feels a bit out of place.
In that case, what would be the most suitable word to describe this? Since it may not be something I’m familiar with, let’s think about it for a moment.
Hmmm, it’s a stick, but it has a bulge in the middle. Moreover, this seems to be bulging like the cap of a mushroom, doesn’t it?
Now that leads me to the conclusion that it indeed is a spear but……

As I was concentrating on memorizing words and letters, I heard what seemed to be the school chime echoing from outside the room. It seemed that several lectures for today had ended.
I have missed several things with my intense concentration, but by looking at the height of the sun outside, I can roughly estimate the time. As civilized as I am, I still lived in the forest after all. There should be one more class left.
I was just about to look back to my book to concentrate a bit more when I noticed something staring from outside the window at me.
It seemed to be a small monkey monster, and since it was here, I assumed it was someone’s familiar, but for the time being, I did the movement that Elena had taught me to recognize a familiar.
When I raised my hand, the proof of my familiar contract appeared there, shown to the monkey like a seal. The monkey seemed to understand what I meant, nodding repeatedly before showing its palm to me.
It’s often said that monkey monsters are smart and cunning, and they seem to be really clever monsters. Putting aside a special case like me, this guy must have been trained very well.
[Ukikii, ukii. (You’re looking for that huh. Here.)]
[Oog!? (It talked!?)]
I let out a surprised sound when the monkey spoke. However, I can talk to horses too, so I guess that’s not too strange.
[Ukki, ukikiki ukiiiikiki. (Rejoice, for I shall welcome you as a member of our Familiar Alliance.)]
As I recovered from my surprise, the monkey started to say that.
No, aren’t we gonna start with a self-introduction first?
