- When I Reincarnated, I Became Even More of a Gorilla
- 23 - Arrival at the Royal Capital
The rattling carriage rocked us along the road past Marquis Penny’s territory. Just as we had to pay some sort of bribe when we entered Marquis Penny’s territory, we also had to pay it when we left.
The people under Marquis Penny really are like corrupt nobles. The noble we met when leaving was a Baron, but unlike Baron Trill, whom I met at the Gladysbalt government office, this one’s firmly accepting bribe money as well.
I guess people here just thought that’s just how things are, that’s why Elena had money prepared, but this is just an unnecessary expense. Even so, do these people really think doing that is alright? Going up against someone with a higher title, I mean.
When I asked her that, Elena answered with a smile. However, her smile looked as if she was somewhat disappointed.
[Hahaha, Gorimatsu knows a lot about titles huh. Of course, going against someone with a higher status is originally unthinkable. However, they’re doing that only because they have the Marquis behind them. It’s customary in Parverna to treat Frontier Counts as equal to a Marquis. However, by law, they’re technically equal to a Count. That’s why people like them exist. Do you understand?]
[Oog. (Unn.)]
I see. I didn’t know the laws of this country, so I was looking at the situation based on what I knew from my previous life, but such things certainly are possible. I had assumed it would be the default where Frontier Counts are equal in status with a Marquis, but since there are situations like this, let’s be careful.
After passing through Marquis Penny’s territory, we finally arrived at a territory directly under the royal family. That said, it wasn’t as large as the Royal Capital and its surrounding towns.
After we pass through one more town, the next one would apparently be the Royal Capital. While we were talking about this……
Well, we passed through that town just now already. The roads are well-maintained and paved in the royal family’s direct territory, so traveling by horse-drawn carriage is a lot easier. It’s as if the damage to my buttocks that was bothering me until a moment ago has miraculously disappeared.
When we entered the royal family’s direct territory, Elena stopped what she had been working on and looked out the window. She apparently had other homework to do at school other than getting a familiar, and she was finishing that up.
Following suit, I looked out the window and saw a large expanse of farmland and pastureland. In the pastureland, there were animals such as cows and sheep, and in the farmland, there were farmers harvesting vegetables.
In Gladysbalt, people mainly grow wheat and other grains, but in this area, vegetables seem to be the main crop. I guess this must be the industry of the town we passed just now.
[Gorimatsu, in this area, they are emphasizing agriculture thanks to the measures implemented by the magistrate of the earlier town. In our country, we used to produce food in only one place. However, after the place where we were growing vegetables had a stampede and the crops were wasted, we started farming in other towns.]
[Oog, oogo oog? (Hmm, was Gladysbalt alright?)]
[Yeah, we were alright. We don’t farm in dangerous places right from the start after all. See, there was no such place near the Sage’s Forest where Gorimatsu lived, right?]
Hearing Elena pointing this out, I remembered the road we took to the Capital City. Now that she mentioned it, there certainly have only been vast grasslands, but no areas that seemed like they were used for cultivating crops. It was only when we came near the Capital City that I had finally seen such places.
[Oog. Oogo. (Unn. That’s right.)]
[Right? We’re a household that protects the frontier after all. We had paid reasonable attention to this.]
Elena looked out the window once more, then returned to her homework at hand. It seems that she intends to finish it while she’s still in the carriage.
With how disinterested she looked, I assumed the homework she was working on was for a subject other than magic studies. Well, whatever subject it is, I can’t help her, so I can only say good luck.
From there, I decided to stay quiet so as not to disturb her. Since there was only me, Elena and Elena’s luggage in the carriage, it wasn’t that pressed in space, but this carriage still felt cramped. It would be better to stay as still as possible so as not to get in her way.
(Since they call it Royal Capital, I guess the place would be luxurious? I’m looking forward to it.)
Alone with my thoughts, I wondered what the Royal Capital was like. Since I’ve got free time, I might as well study. Let’s read through that book for studying letters that Father gave me.
***
[……Oiiii! Wake up, Gorimatsu!]
[Oog?]
I open my eyes to find my shoulder being shaken. At first, I didn’t understand what was going on, but within a few seconds, I grasped the situation.
Ahh, I must have fallen asleep. I was studying letters…… but fell asleep halfway through, so I only remember about half of it.
It was Elena who was shaking me, and it seemed she was shaking me quite forcefully. So much so that she’s sweating.
[Oog ooga? (We’re here?)]
[Yeah, we’ve arrived.]
Ohh, we’re finally in the Royal Capital huh. What kind of place is this? Since there’s a King living here, I was sure this must be a luxurious place with big houses and such.
Just as I was thinking that, Elena said something shocking.
[We’ve arrived. This is Gladysbalt’s residence here in the Royal Capital!]
[O- Ooga!? (W- What!?)]
It seems that we had already entered the Royal Capital while I was sleeping and arrived at our destination, our residence here in the Royal Capital.
Well, Elena is going to the school dormitory, so we have to move around a bit more.
For the time being, we have to unload our luggage from the carriage. It seems that not all the luggage was brought in from the dormitory and was instead procured here.
It’s important to return them here if we aren’t going to use them.
After I woke up, I started working with great vigor. Mainly as a luggage carrier, that is.
I guess familiars can be useful in situations like this.
