When I Reincarnated, I Became Even More of a Gorilla - 15
The day after I was welcomed into the Gladysbalt family as Elena’s familiar, I was on my way with Elena to the government office in the Capital City.
When we were about to depart today, there was a bit of a commotion when Misha insisted that she wanted to go too, but her father didn’t allow it, so she gave up. She apparently still had some studying to do.
[Gorimatsu. Let’s get ready to get out of the carriage.]
[Oog, oog. (Unnn, alright.)]
As Elena said, we were now on a carriage, but I remembered that I had only been told that we were going to the government office and hadn’t asked what we were going to do, so I asked.
[Oog, ooga? (Hey, what are we going to the government office for?)]
[I see, I hadn’t mentioned it huh. We will be going to the government office to have Gorimatsu registered. As I’m a noble, we are going to the government office. The government office isn’t a place for administering territories but rather a facility established by the government. It’s also a place where matters related to the country and issues involving other countries that can’t be handled by the fiefdom.]
To summarize the purpose of the visit as explained by Elena, she’s going to submit a report of me being her familiar.
Elena’s vacation ends today, and she’s heading to the Royal Capital as soon as she completes the formalities at that government office. It seems that she originally only came back to meet me, so her staying overnight at her parents’ house is actually not part of her expectations.
For commoners, familiar registrations are apparently done through cooperative associations such as the Adventurers’ Guild, but since nobles, whether they’re good or not, are under the management of the country, their procedures are done at a state-related government office.
[The registration process is also part of the homework I had to do for the academy. Thanks to Gorimatsu, I will be able to finish my homework successfully. Thank you.]
[Oog. (You’re welcome.)]
I don’t really think it’s something that requires special thanks, as I would rather thank her for giving me the opportunity to go out of the forest.
Well, it seems that she would feel relieved if I accepted this here, so I’ll just accept her thanks.
It seems like quite some time has passed as we were having that conversation, as the carriage has stopped, and the coachman, who seems to be like a butler employed by the Frontier Count, calls out. How should I say this…… He gives off the impression of being a capable person.
[Well then, Gorimatsu. Let’s go.]
[Oog. (Unn.)]
I alighted from the carriage with Elena and proceeded directly into the building in front of us. The building is magnificent, and with my current small stature, I can’t even see the top.
It’s a building with about four floors, maybe more.
[The third floor of this building is where we submit registration documents.]
I follow Elena as she strides forward. From what I heard in the carriage, registering here means that our information will be shared all the way to the Royal Capital, so we wouldn’t have to go to the crowded offices in the Royal Capital.
Elena went up the stairs and spoke to a staff member behind a counter.
[Excuse me. I would like to register my familiar. I’m Elena Gladysbalt.]
[Yes, Elena-sama then. Have you prepared the necessary documents?]
[Yeah, here you go.]
[These are indeed the necessary documents. Please wait a moment while I check them.]
After Elena handed the documents to the staff, the staff left the counter to check the contents. I’m kinda wondering why she couldn’t just check the documents here, but each place has its own way of doing, I guess?
After a few minutes of waiting, the staff member who had just left came back with a panicked look on her face. A man dressed a little stiffly was standing behind her.
[I’m sorry. Regarding the documents submitted by Elena-sama, there are a few details we would like to verify, so if it’s not too much trouble, may we ask you to follow us in the back?]
[Yeah, I don’t mind. Let’s go, Gorimatsu.]
I follow Elena to the back. With the staff leading and Elena walking behind that male personnel, I find myself walking behind everyone. Everyone’s pace is rather brisk though, causing me to walk faster to keep up.
Even so, having us follow them to the back, I wonder if they wanted to do something? Are they going to find fault? Or perhaps, was there something wrong with the paperwork?
As we continued walking, we soon entered a room, and following the guidance of the staff, we took our seats. I sit in the chair next to Elena’s. The softness of the one-person sofa makes me satisfied.
Now then, let’s ask why we were called here. If it’s gonna be inconvenient for Elena or me, I won’t be merciful.
[First of all, please allow us to express our gratitude for coming all the way here. I am Baron Ben=Trill, the head of this registration office.]
[Umu, pleased to meet you. I am…… Well, you already know who I am, right?]
Elena said as if it were a matter of course, and the Baron nodded his head. Elena is like the princess of this territory after all. How could he not know her?
When Elena urged him to continue, the Baron told her the reason why we were brought here.
[So, why were we brought here?]
[Yes, as a matter of fact, the documents submitted by Elena-sama contain information that needs to be confirmed.]
[You did mention something like that. What are you talking about?]
With neither I nor Elena having any idea what he was talking about, we asked what he meant, but the Baron responded with hesitation, seemingly finding it difficult to answer.
[Actually, it’s about the species of your familiar, is this true?]
What he asked was the authenticity of the familiar’s species. In other words, he’s asking about the truth of my species.
[What do you mean? It’s true, but why are you asking that?]
[It’s the truth huh. However, it’s quite unbelievable. When one speaks of Goldbacks, they’re regarded as a rarely confirmed monster, and the last confirmed sighting in the Gladysbalt territory was quite a long time ago. As expected, we’d find it hard to believe that the black-furred monster you have with you is a Goldback.]
According to the Baron, I apparently don’t look wise. Goldbacks are considered highly intelligent, so much so that they’re referred to as the “Sage of the Forest”, so it’s apparently hard to believe someone like me is one.
[Fumu, what should be done here then? I thought there wouldn’t be any problem since I’m reporting about this myself.]
[As a matter of fact, the other day, there was a problem with a false report by an academy student in the Royal Capital, so it was decided that we couldn’t pass any excessive reports which we felt needed to be verified.]
Apparently, one of Elena’s schoolmates had done something beforehand. It’s unsettling why we have to go through all this trouble though.
However, Elena is a good and honest girl, so she accepted the situation, without blaming them, and instead suggested presenting evidence, having the Baron act as a witness.
[Well then, how about the Baron act as a witness and confirm that he’s a Goldback? That would be fine, wouldn’t it?]
[I will be the witness huh. Doing that would make registration proceed without issues, but in that case, we would need to conduct the verification as soon as possible.]
[Yeah, doing it right now would be fine with me.]
[Eh!? W- Well then, we will start immediately. We will have a large area prepared just in case. This way please.]
As for the Baron, he probably meant to ask “If you’re going to turn that little gorilla into a Goldback, wouldn’t we need to make preparations?”.
Moreover, he must have been surprised that Elena said she wanted to do it right now. I guess saying they’ll get the location ready is good enough of a response.
Something did come to mind while we were moving though. I made a pretty spectacular entrance when I first came to this city, but I wonder if they didn’t even know that?
Well, I suppose they wouldn’t quickly know something that just happened yesterday.
Let’s just have them understand by seeing it in person.
