For I Am A Side Character - 93: Resource Liberation Event - Part 1
As early as the morning did arrive the next day, I awoke to find that Jessica was by my side. As she slept peacefully in this newly renovated home, I was under the notice of a pair of wings waving outside my home.
‘…this presence.’ all but in an instant, I knew who it was that came uninvited.
As I slowly made my way out of the bed and down to the living room, I was greeted by the sight of the angel who looked ever so comfortable on the couch.
“…Adifer, what are you doing here?” I asked as I witnessed her ink-black wings spread out in the open.
“Don’t be so stingy, I just came by to see how you’ve been doing since the last time we meet.” she said as her dark gaze simply remained unreadable.
I can never tell what she was thinking.
“You know well enough about what happens in my life, so I don’t I have to tell you anything.” I said.
“Hmm, just because I’m one of God’s favorites, doesn’t mean it puts me in a level of omnipotence. I’m just a girl who can fly and read the lines.” she said.
“…” saying this things, I didn’t buy into her words. I know enough to keep to myself against a sly fox like her.
“…I’m just wondering about your plan moving forward with the current events of God’s mission. And your having trouble with the mission, I can always lend you a hand like I always do.” she said as she gestured her hand open to me.
“Thanks…but I don’t need your help.” I said as I denied her hand.
“I can understand why you might be hesitant to ask for help, but know that I’m willing to do anything just to move on with the story of this world.” she said as she gave off a soft smile.
But that wasn’t enough to fully entice me into her own curiosity…but still, it couldn’t hurt to simply converse with her.
“…What has God been up to lately? I barely even heard from him since I went to the S-rank dungeon by myself.” I asked.
“There’s nothing too worrying about god’s absence lately. He’s just been quite busy as he always is day in and day out up in his heavenly domain. That is why I’m here in his place…if you ever have any worries, know that I can help with the best of my abilities.” she said.
“…Can I trust you?” I asked.
“I may not be as all-knowing as God is, but I know enough to help with the current story’s progress.” she said.
And thinking about her offer to help, although she was as trustworthy as that of a stranger, her efforts in the past did accomplish with the progress of the story…
“…Fine, if you’re that willing to help, do you know of a boy named John Bishop?” I asked.
“Of course, the boy who was blessed with a holy body and is currently on the rise to become the next saint. Every angel knows of his existence up in heaven. And recently, he was even asked to come to you under god’s orders.”
“Then have you heard about the current problem that he has been having?” I asked.
“Problem?”
“…He has been receiving visions lately about an order to murder the Miller brothers. And it specifically came out of an angel’s voice.”
“?” Adifer’s eyes furrowed at the news I just spoke of. It was the first time I saw her react to this news this way.
“Do you know anything about this?” I asked.
“No…but if you said that it comes from his dream, then its mostly likely an order given from either a demon or a demon worshipper. Dream-like powers are rare…but they exist, so the possibility of it coming from someone like a demon worshipper isn’t impossible.” she said, sounding as calm and straight as ever.
“So you don’t know, I see.”
“Still, whats strange about this is how specific the vision is. Its worrying to hear that the miller brothers are involved in something other than what the story has been made to be written. I have to look into this.” she said as she got off the couch and started making her way to the door.
“…you’re leaving?” I asked.
“Don’t worry, unlike God I can always come here whenever I like…or is it that you’re missing me already.” she said as she puts out her usual playful smile.
“…” but even as she played around, I remained calm. Soon enough, she waved goodbye and left my abode.
It was still early in the morning. And seeing as how Jessica was still asleep, I decided to cook her up some breakfast. With how the event was starting today, I decided to make a healthy and nutritious meal.
***
The first event was starting off in a rather new dungeon just founded and conquered about a week ago. It was filled with a resource called a [Suckle Crystal], a kind of resource that monsters mostly feed on on a daily basis. It was studied to be quiet a rather healthy kind of resource that makes the monsters who feed on it quite protective about it.
With the monsters ranking from D to C, the dungeon was categorized to be a C-ranked dungeon. Yet the academy was able to develop the cave in a way that creates an environment fit for the event.
The game starts with the academy preparing five main sources of the [Suckle Crystal] found inside the dungeon. The objective of each group is to find these resources first and gather it back to the entrance point of the academy.
Once they return with a set of amount of these crystals, they are awarded by points.
With the first place being five points.
The second place gets four points.
The third place gets three points.
The fourth place gets two points.
And the last placer gets one point.
It’s a simple scoring system that determines a hunters capability to be adaptive in a resource-capable dungeon. So the first thing the group must prioritize was the resources.
And if not that, the academy has also developed this dungeon to host five mini-bosses put out in different areas of the dungeon. Each of the boss room locations are designated for each group to protect. Being informed about their location, the group can have the option to protect the boss-rooms their assigned to or they can prioritize the resource collection.if a boss dungeon is defeated, the group who was able to defeat the boss gains an additional [two points], this rule entices the group to find a boss room rather than collect some resources.
Either way, it depends on how each group is going to move forward with the event.
And another possible tactic to move forward with this event is a simple all-out war against another group. Defeating the group determines their place on their score. If they are defeated altogether first out of everyone, they can place last, but if not all of their group is eliminated in the event, their defeat/victory is not yet determined until they either collect enough resources.
Now that the day has finally come to this, a lot of the students were quite excited about what was too happen. And since this was a live event, each group was assigned three drones to follow them and watch over their situations inside the dungeon.
With my group just arriving at the entrance of the dungeon, I could already see a crowd of audiences cheering from the sidelines. From a simple look around, there were about 500 people cheering with excitement. Half of it was filled students cheering for each class and the other being civilians watching to cheer for their sons and daughters.
One particular cheer group was Jessica’s family waving the Young Merchant Guild flag over the sidelines.
“Go! Go! Go! Jessica! Soril! Bring honor to the guild name!!” shouted Jessica’s father quite loudly. Behind him was a line of men wearing black suits waving the guild flag along his chant. Just watching them work their cheer, I couldn’t help but get second-hand embarrassment and so did Jessica.
Having to acknowledge that we were being cheered on, Jessica pulled me in to the side where our other groups were huddled together to hear the plan made by our Guild Leader Representative, Seraphina Drakonis.
“So listen up guys, here’s the position of where the resources are possibly being gathered.” said Ms. Sera as she pointed to an already drawn map.
She pointed to seven possible locations, all being put very far from the entrance and near the corners of the dungeon.
“And here’s where our assigned boss room is being placed.” Ms. Sera pointed to the center of the dungeon map. It was quite baffling to see that our assigned boss room was put in the middle.
“It was informed in the details that each room only consist of a boss with a C-rank difficulty. They made it this weak so that any group whose willing to fight can have the possibility easily taking out a group’s position. Normally, if I was placed in this event, I would have thought of easily eliminating each boss room to secure a high place in the event. And that must be what the others are thinking, so instead of doing just that, here’s what you’re going to do.”

As each group was finished with listening to the tactics from their guild leaders, they were now lined up in front of the entrance.
And from the looks of their faces, most of the groups were turning to our class instead of the others.
“…?” I was a bit curious as to why. With Class-D glaring at from a distance, I can understand why they would turn to us since we rejected their offer for an alliance, but Class-B and Class-A were also turning to us as if we were a target of sorts.
“Don’t mind them. Focus on what’s ahead.” I said as I told the others who were also nervous about the stares given to them.
This was how the event started. With Jason standing in front of the entrance along with the other groups, it was displayed as if it was a marathon placed for each runners to go forward. But that wasn’t the case. Because any minute now, a certain surprise will activate, causing every expectations in this event to go wild.
Everything was prepared. Thors carried with him all the items necessary to be used when collecting materials. That being a strong pickaxe and a large durable sack. There were five sacks needed to be filled for each group, so going back after having collected the necessary amount was going to be hard.
“Tony, are all the strength enhancement spells ready on your end?” I asked as I knew that this kind of spell was necessary in this event for carrying back the resources.
Tony nodded in affirmation and [Kimchi], our representative approached me with a rather confident smile.
“Looks like everything’s ready to go, so what do you think might happen inside once we go in?” he asked.
“…I don’t know, but trust in Ms. Sera’s plan. Everything hinges on you guys, so don’t disappoint.” I said.
“Don’t worry, with me in the lead of this event, I’m sure we’ll take first place no doubt.” he said proudly.
I nodded with a smile, seeing as how confident he was. And soon enough, the event was finally starting.
{Good Morning everyone! Today is finally the day the students and the hopes of our future stand to prove themselves to the world. With the first event of the week being the [Dungeon Resource Liberation Event.], who knows how this event will go down. A lot of hopes are being pinned towards the students today. How will they perform, how will they prove themselves and most of all, Will one of them become a star to lead today’s generation of hunters! Now, once the buzzer rings, the event is underway.] said the man on the speaker who was hosting the event.
[Now then, let us begin.]

[Go!]
And to the announcers call, a white light suddenly glows beneath the feet of all the participants. I expected this to happen…
“W-what is going on?!” asked Jessica was taken aback by this situation.
And not before long, we were taken off our feet and transferred into the dungeon.
This was the start of the event…an event that showed just how unpredictable it was.
Before they what and why it was happening, we each found ourselves in the dark moist insides of the dungeon.
“…Ah…what?!” [K-obama] couldn’t help but be in shock of it all.
And no one could blame him…
The academy planned this from the start without even telling even the guild leaders to surprise them as well as us.
Looking around, I can tell that we were all here. Not a single person of my team was separated. Its probably the same with the other teams as well.
[Teleportation] as a start to this event really puts the players into giving a lot of great reactions. And its being showed right now by the drones who started filming us.
“Okay guys, huddle up.” I said as I wanted to get this event underway.
With everyone gathered beside me, I then pulled out the map which showed the details of where we were standing.
“…Looks like we’re all here.” I said as I pointed on the far left-upper corner of the map. Seeing as how the map was magically inclined to pin out our locations, it was really reassuring to know where we were at all times in the dungeon.
“Hmm, the Mini-Boss room that we were supposed to protect is in the center…and the nearest location that Ms. Sera said was possible for the resource to gather is just…around the corner. Good, we’re lucky that we’re this close to the resources.” I said.
“Ms. Sera also said that there’s one other possible location here.” said Marilyn who pointed to the second nearest point of the map.
“If you guys don’t find any resources on the first point, go to the second point.” I said.
“okay.”
“And remember, try not to confront the other players. Confrontation isn’t the game here, but resource collection is. Remember what Ms. Sera said, only confront when necessary…its good to confront the monsters but not the other hunters.” I said.
“…and you, what will you do?” asked Jessica.
“I’ll do what Ms. Sera assigned me to do. Protect the Mini-boss room assigned to our group.” I said.
This was the plan made by Ms. Sera.
While the others try and find the resources, lead by [Ken], I on the other hand will try to secure our safety by protecting the Mini-boss room assigned to class-C.
It’s a simple way of assuring our place to not go last in an assured time.
Now, I gave the only map to the [Kim] and decided to move on ahead. But before I could, Jessica was able to grab my hand and she pulled me in to give me a peck on the cheeks.
*Kiss*
“…?!” I was a bit taken surprised by her actions.
“Good luck out there.” she said as she looked to me with caring eyes.
“Y-yeah, you too.” I said as I could be seen to be red with embarrassment.
I’m pretty sure the drone was able to capture that moment, and I’m pretty sure that Jessica’s father is steaming mad right now.
Anyway, I said my goodbyes and separated with the group.
The event is finally underway, and I have a role to play in the group.
