For I Am A Side Character - 84: John's Worries and Being back to Class
As I was making my way to my classroom, I was unexpectedly met with John Bishop waiting near my classroom. He called out to me and wanted to speak to me. Since I had no excuse, I went with him…and from the looks of his expression, something was worrying him. We went near an empty hallway where no one could talk, but before I could start to ask him anything, I started to notice that John was nervously expressive, as if someone was out to kill him.
“John, what’s wrong?” I asked.
“..I…I had another vision last night.” he said in a nervous tone.
“Another vision? Was it an Angel’s Choir again?” I asked specifically about an Angel’s Choir and not from God himself.
“Yes…N-no…I’m not sure because it wasn’t a choir…and it also wasn’t from God…” he said as he looked extremely pale.
“What?” I was shocked since it wasn’t either of the two.
“It was a woman’s voice…her voice seemed angelic, beautiful to a point that it made me wonder if it was an actual angel speaking to me directly in my dream.”
“Maybe it wasn’t.” I said in doubt.
“Maybe…but that isn’t the problem.”
“Then what is it?” I asked.
“The voice ordered me to kill a pair of brothers…a man named Miles Miller and his brother Juel Miller. She said that they were Demons in disguise and that their blood wasn’t purely that of a human’s.”
“!?” I was shocked, to have those names be involved tugged me into a state of worry.
“And you believed her? Do you know these brothers who she spoke of?” I asked as I was starting to believe that something was wrong with this said ‘Angel.’
“I don’t…but she called them to be demons and she also ordered me to spread these words to the priest, making it sure that the prophecy must be delivered…I felt inclined to follow her words…but something about her voice felt wrong…or maybe it was simply the image of her order that made it feel wrong.”
“In what way?” I asked.
“…I don’t know. It was just a gut feeling. Something I get from time to time when hunting in a dungeon. Its likes a sixth sense of sort, you must understand right?” he asked.
“…Yeah, I understand what you mean. So what did you do?” I asked, as I felt inclined to believe that the person who spoke within his dream was something entirely different than an Angel.
“Nothing yet…I haven’t even told Father yet…”
“The Priest who raised you?” I asked.
“Yes…although the Angel inclined me to spread her words…I couldn’t. I wasn’t sure enough to go through with this vision…not until I get a second opinion.”
“So you came to me?” I asked.
“…Yes, and I’m sorry if I did.” he said as he looked burdened by this ‘vision’.
From the looks of it, I can see just how troubled he was. Thankfully he wasn’t blinded by the words said to have come from the angel, its wise not to go through everything simply because it was said to be of holy descent…but I’m sure of it. Its not of holy descent, after all, God wants me to keep the Miller Brothers alive. If someone wants them dead, then its most likely an enemy.
If it’s a demon, it can easily turn myself resolve to fight them…but if its something more complicated, things need to be thought through carefully.
So what do I do?
As I looked to John with a deep expression, I decided to brace this idea and simply said to make him wait.
“John, did the voice ever said of a time limit in its order?” I asked.
“N-no, she just said to kill them…, it didn’t matter how since I had Holy magic in my body, but there was no time specifically mentioned or way I did it.”
“Hmm, Good, that means she gave you time, and lucky for you I know one of those people who are targeted by this voice.”
“You do?” he asked in surprise.
“Yes, I don’t really remember what section he was in, but he’s in the same year as us.”
“Who is it?” he asked.
“Juel Miller. But even if I do know him, it doesn’t mean that he knows me all to well. But he is friendly with Jason from Class A.” I said.
“Jason Emory? Hmm…should I bring this up to him as well? I mean…wouldn’t it be better to have one extra hand in this?” he asked.
“For me personally, I wouldn’t do it. But from what I know, Jason’s a good person…and he’s friends with Juel. Do you really want to say that you had a vision of order to kill Juel and his brother?” I asked in question to his idea.
“N-no.” he said.
“Good. I’m not saying that we should. I’m just informing you that Jason’s a friend of Juel, he might be a possible asset in the future if we were to face off with a clear enemy in mind.” I said.
“Okay…so what do we do then?” he asked.
“…seeing as we’re put in a corner right now, the only thing we can do as of the moment is wait. Wait until this said ‘Angel’ comes back up again and speaks with you at night. Because what we need right now is more information.”
“I see…”
“Don’t be bothered by it. If this was truly an angel that spoke to you that night, she wouldn’t harm you, but if she is an enemy, then I suggest you fight back. Being the only person granted with the body straight from God means that you’re more a threat than you know.”
“I understand, thank you. I was right to meet with you Soril and I hope this doesn’t become too big of a problem in the future.” he said as he looked slightly less worried.
“Don’t be too worried, I’m here if you need my help.” I said as I assured him of my assistance.
“Thank you…”
From then on, John decided to go back to his class…and I wouldn’t be too surprised if he were to actually dig up on Juel’s information along with his brother, but most likely nothing bad would happen since I know enough that the Miller Brothers are clean of anything guilty.
Now as I finally made my way to the classroom, I was meet with glares from my teacher.
It seems that I was late yet again into Sgt. O’riley’s class.
***
After our classes, Sgt. O’riley finally revealed this event for this year.
Sgt. O’riley posted the news about a newly approved activity named the [Interim Guild Factions] which was the same title as by the book. But this announcement came with a few changes that caught me off guard.
First was the number of participants able to join for each class. In this year, the school allowed for it to have 7 participants rather than just the original count of 5. although it was a bit surprising, I can’t really imagine just how much of this count should change the current events of the original story.
And the second change was the fact that it was sponsored around the Riches of Mr. Wildebor. The Luckiest man alive. And if he’s involved, a lot of changes are going to be made.
One of those influences where I suspected were because of his decision was to make this entire event live for the entire city to see. By using drones as cameras, it ables the audiences to watch us perform in the activities set out by the academy.
This makes me worried since there’s a chance that I might be involved and be seen by the public doing some shady things while undergoing the quest set by God. If things do get to that point and if I do get in trouble, I’ll have no one else to blame but Mr. Wildebor himself.
And for the last issue that was changed was the fact that in the making of our temporary Guilds with a temporary name, they made it more ‘easier’ by having an adult included in this event. Namely it pools into one adult and seven students participating in the event.
They included the adult in the events as a way to focus on the idea that as future hunters, we need to learn more directly from those who actually undergo the life on a hunter. So meaning, the academy will hire actual experienced and professional Guild Leaders from actual guilds to guide us as we fight against other temporary guilds.
And it isn’t just some random Guild leader than we can involve in this event, the moment we are able to pick the seven students involved in the event, those seven students are set to choose a specific leader in mind. It can be someone they know who doesn’t mind being in the event or they can negotiate with a guild under the sponsorship of the academy.
Anyway…as for the actual activities for this event, its kept a secret until a day before the event to make it more interesting. Either way…the changes are still manageable to a point.
When Sgt. O’riley finally finishes with his announcement for this event, he gave the entire class a week to choose the top seven participants into the Interim Guild Faction of Class C. Using the time we had left in our class with Sgt. O’riley, we used this chance to discuss the event with one another.
But the moment Sgt. O’riley left, all to easily, my classmates for some reason turned to me. Each and every one of them were seriously eyeing me as if I was a piece of decor to be stared at.
“…W-what’s going on?” I asked as I was a bit uncomfortable with their stares.
But before long, my classmates soon turned their eyes away from me. Some were a bit nervous, others felt angry and envy for some reason and some just simply curious. My classmates gave different expressions to my curiosity, but none of them seemed ever so happy.
And to my question, it was Marilyn who approached and answered my curiosity.
“Marilyn, did something happen?” I asked.
“N-no, not really…but I have to tell you something.” She said as she scratched her cheek with a bit of a nervous expression.
“Hmm?”
“Normally in each Class in our year, we should have a representative when it comes to things like this. Like leading the class, taking up a front and things like that, we need some kind of system.”
“Okay…so what does that have to do with how my classmates are looking at me as if I’m dirt.” I said.
“No its not like that…its just that our class is a bit divided.”
“Hmm? What do you mean by Divided?”
“Oh…I guess you really weren’t aware at all. Huh, this is a bit sad.” she said as she looked more worried.
Marilyn proceeded to turn to a direction and she called out to a name I wasn’t really aware of.
“Um…K-Kenji, why don’t you-”
But before she could finish, out all of a sudden came a boy who stood up from his desk in a fit of authority and rage. And without halting, he proceeded to march to my desk carrying a ruler on hand.
He was a boy less taller than I was, with a slightly thicker pair of brows and dark eyes. Paired with his somewhat spiky black hair, he seemed like your typical average high school boy you would find anywhere, but the one thing keeping him apart from the rest was his presence right now who spoke of authority.
He marched and marched all to a point where he stops in front of me and quickly smacks down his ruler at a force that took everyone’s attention. His ruler broke into pieces and he stared at me with quite the heavy breaths.
*Smack!*
“Hmph! It seems I finally caught your damned eye!” he said as he looked extremely irritated.
“…Um, what?”
“Let me just say this now so that we can move past the awkwardness…My name is Kenji, I don’t have a last name because I’m an orphan…but my name is Kenji, so I hope you would remember that.” he said.
“Oh…um, okay.” I said as I was put on the spot yet again.
“For months….since the day we attended the academy, I have always…ALWAYS! Called out to you, you rat bastard!”
“What?”
“First Day of school, I introduced myself to you personally…you greeted back, but the next day…the next DAY! You fucking forgot about me!!” he said as he somewhat screamed, letting out all of his anger at me.
“Um…”
“My name…my presence, you barely ever even got to acknowledge both of those things about me…but its okay, I introduced myself again on the second day…I said ‘Hi, my name is Kenji, I just sit at the corner of the class and saw just how well you can fight, and I was wondering if we can be friends’…you said ‘sure.’ you shook my hand and it felt like we became friends…but the next day…and the next…and the next…and the next…”
“…” I could only watch and try to remember anything about him, but I was blank like a freshly bought whiteboard.
“And the next day and the next…you forgot about me. Over and over again. So I gave up.”
“…”
“I saw no reason to befriend a person who for some reason can’t remember me.”
“Oh…um, okay.”
“But then our classmates started talking about who was to become the representative of our class. It was obvious that whoever was the strongest or the smartest should be the one to lead. But those two categories went to only two people…you and your Girlfriend. When I tried to approach this idea to the two of you, it didn’t seemed like you were interested enough to listen and Jessica was too busy keeping away the girls who were also interested in you . You were just out there…relaxing like no one’s business…so I took that position. I am now your representative of this class…me, Kenji. Once the 15th ranked student overall..now currently 13th ranked.”
“Okay…but why the hate?” I asked.
“Because! For whatever reason, our classmates still think that you should be the one to lead our class…but its obvious that you’re not interested. So here we are. We have to settle who gets to become the representative of our class in front of everybody. You have to say it…say, “I don’t want to be the representative.” and I get to be the one to lead. And as the leader I should be the one to settle on who gets to participate in the class activities.” he said with a smirk and an exhausted breath.
“Also, he hates you because you kinda took his girlfriend away.” added Marilyn.
“Wha-”
“Shut up Marilyn!!” he said as he looked very flustered.
“its the truth though…” she said out of ear.
“Ah…whatever, I hated her anyway…her and her hour-glass like body! And silky soft hair!” he said, justifying the break-up between him and his ex.
“Why didn’t I know any of these things? I would’ve known if I talked to you at least once. For an entire half semester” I said.
“Oh…its probably because of the small curse that Kenji brought from a dungeon and accidentally put on you on the first day of class.” said Marilyn.
“What kind of curse was it?” I asked.
“Umm…he said that it was the kind of curse that makes you forget about a person no matter how much you try to re-introduce yourself. It’s a pretty brutal curse, especially for Kenji’s situation since he puts it on you and he was the target.” said Marilyn.
“Shut up Marilyn! And anyway, I already got rid of the curse that was placed on Soril just now from breaking this ruler I bought off on the internet. It’s a weird process but its works…79% percent chance it works….I think.” said Kenji as he was annoyed by her small add-ins.
“Oh, so that ruler was used to put away the curse? Why did it took so long?” I asked.
“Shut up Soril! I don’t have premium membership on my delivery service and the curse was really specific so I had the cure costumed made all across the world on a different continent!”
“Wow, thanks.” I said in thanks.
“Whatever! Just say that you wont be the representative and we can put all of this behind us!” he said angrily.
“Okay…um, it’s an honor to be wanted as a representative, but it’s a hassle and I don’t wanna do it.” I said genuinely.
“Hah! You hear that guys! Now its finally official, I’m the representative of this class!” he said ever so smugly.
“Now, my Sheila will finally take me back! HA HA HA.” he said out-loud.
The whole class could only ever look to Kenji as if he was this pitiful thing…
It was sad, but at least he got what he wanted.
Anyway, the day ended with a guy named Kenny being the representative of our class. He seemed legit….Sort of.
And he is sort of like the serious type, and only third of being smart other than Jessica and Zelisha in our class.
Although he has some issues, he looks pretty dependable enough.…that’s all we need as a representative of our class.
Him, a guy named Kentucky.
Now before I left the school, I had to visit a certain head principal of the academy…
