For I Am A Side Character - 81: Jessica versus the Drake Boss Dungeon.
As early as the sun could be risen, where in this dark dungeon, Jessica and Soril have completely prepared themselves to finally face off against the boss of this entire dungeon. Or at least Jessica herself who will face the boss on her own.
Although it would be beneficial to end this dungeon early with Soril leading the kill, he had another opinion on hand that simply took Jessica’s attention. He asked if it was alright for Jessica to take this chance in killing her first dungeon boss as a guild leader.
“Are you ready?” he asked as they stood in front of a huge crystal gate. It was clear that this was the entrance to the boss room, and knowing the dangers behind it, Jessica couldn’t help but sweat nervously.
“A-are you sure about this?” she asked.
“It should be this important seeing as how you’re the leader. Don’t you want make a good impression on your record of your first conquered dungeon?” he asked.
“I do…but what if I can’t do it?” she asked as she seemed uncertain.
“Don’t worry, I’ll step in if things get a little bit too dangerous. I guarantee that defeating a C-ranked boss is less difficult than having to face off against an actual A-rank monster, so you don’t have anything to worry about.” he said as he assured her with his capability and confidence.
“O-okay, then lets do this.”
As she was fully prepared to step in, Soril simply stood by her side with no weapons carried. He had shown such confidence because after all, since last night as they were both resting, he sneaked into the boss room before Jessica could and he tested it himself just how powerful the boss of this dungeon was.
And simply put, based off of his general evaluation…Jessica had a 65% chance of defeating the boss. It might even be higher considering that she had gained a few levels after facing off against the dozens of fishkens in the open area.
With that said, he knew Jessica was fully capable of defeating the monster on her own.
As the door opened, Jessica was able to witness the monster right before her eyes.
In a staggering height that was twice her size, with greenish scales that resembled a drake and a presence that simple voiced his ego of being a ruler of the dungeon. The crown on its head paired with a pair of dragon daggers on hand simply showed his royal nature.
What stood before Jessica was the monster named the [Alterior King of the Sea Caves.]
“Go on, be confident Jess. I know you enough to know that you have a chance of beating that monster. So don’t be afraid and fight with all your might.”
As Jessica took deep breaths, the king of this dungeon noticed two presences instantly. One was a woman who seemed weaker than the other…and the other was a man who made the ruler pause in fear. For the memory of his experience with that man simply spoke of terror and anguish.
Then and there, it knew not to approach such a beast.
Having to shake his head back into focus, it didn’t take long for the drake to be shocked by the surprise that came his way. For out of nowhere, a pair of daggers came swinging from above like a blade targeted to his neck.
The drake quickly avoided those blades by stepping back, but that was futile seeing as how the moment the twisting form of the blade reached the floor, it quickly diverted its direction to the drake. This time, it couldn’t help but take on the attack.
The drake had no choice but to raise his two daggers to stop this fury of twisting blades with his own strength. But as it collided with him, it was at that moment that he got a clear sight of what this ferocious attacker was.
It was Jessica and her newly formed attack.
It was an evolved form of her old skill, the [Cross Cut] where instead of a simply push of a crossing slash, she was able to maneuver her entire body like a bey-blade. And it was named the [Cyclone Cut]
In the saying where offense was the best defense, it could be applied to this skill as well.
But despite its ferocious nature, the setback of using such a skill gravely uses a lot of Jessica’s stamina.
The moment the drake was able to hold himself well against her Cyclone Cut, made it sure for her to know that she couldn’t push through with just this alone.
So as they were at a impasse, this was the moment the drake decided to push her back, and as he did, she used this momentum to simply land herself well enough.
“Kh!”
As she landed back on the floor, she valued this moment to rest and observe how efficient her attack was. And from the cyclone’s confrontation with the drake’s skin and dagger, she witnissed a few cuts were able to make its way into the drake’s arms. Although they weren’t deep, they were cuts nonetheless.
“…You okay?” asked Soril from a distance as he watched keenfully.
Jessica nodded and she smiled as she witnessed her effort to be fruitful.
A cut on the arm was good enough for her to know that she could deal damage to the drake. And if it was possible for her to attack him in position where he couldn’t guard, she could only assume that her attack would be even more effective.
So she started thinking strategically in this moment.
‘At best…I can only use it another two times before I fall flat from exhaustion, so I need to find the right moment to attack…’
Seeing how pointless it was to find that the drake was full for his defense from his scales and daggers, he was not something she could easily pass through like a door was. Jessica knew this battle would test her to her limits. The drake’s reputation preceded it: fast, vicious, and nearly impervious to most weapons. But Jessica had her own advantages—her agility and her unyielding determination.
The drake hissed, its forked tongue flicking out as it circled her, each step calculated and menacing. Jessica mirrored its movements, her eyes scanning for any sign of weakness. The drake struck as it showed agitation from how its arms were stinging from the pain. Moving with blinding speed, Jessica barely had time to deflect the blow, her swords crossing to catch the twin daggers in a shower of sparks.
The force of the impact sent a jolt up her arms, but she used the momentum to pivot, ducking low and slashing at the drake’s legs. Her blades skidded off its tough hide, leaving only the faintest scratch. The drake retaliated with a swift kick that sent Jessica sprawling. She rolled to her feet, wincing at the sharp pain in her side.
‘Focus, Jess.’ she thought to herself, eyes narrowing as she studied the drake’s movements.
The drake lunged again, its daggers a blur of lethal arcs. Jessica parried and dodged, her movements a dance of precision and speed. Despite her efforts, the drake’s blows were landing more frequently, its speed overwhelming. She needed a new approach.
Observing closely, she noticed a pattern in its attacks. It was the slight hesitation before it struck with its left dagger. This was obviously caused by her first cyclone cut proving worth just how one attack made such an advantage for her.
Timing her move, Jessica feigned a stumble, drawing the drake in. As it hesitated, she sprang forward, her swords slicing in a crisscross pattern aimed at its exposed underbelly. This time, her blades found purchase, leaving deeper gashes. The drake roared in fury, the sound reverberating through the cavern.
[Cross Cut!] she used her skill, making her blades dig even deeper into the drakes skin.
Angered, it launched a furious assault, its daggers flashing in the dim light. Jessica was driven back, her defenses barely holding. She felt the sting of a dagger grazing her arm, then another slicing across her thigh. Blood flowed, warm and sticky, but she gritted her teeth against the pain.
In a desperate gambit, Jessica threw herself into a series of acrobatic flips and spins, using the cavern’s uneven terrain to her advantage. She led the drake towards a cluster of stalagmites, hoping to limit its movement. The drake followed, its focus on her was unwavering. And using his daggers, he cut through the stalagmites like butter. They were cut clean all to a point that it showed a reflection so clear, it simply showed the sharpness of the dagger’s edge.
But as the drake was busy cutting his way through, Jessica used this chance to attack.
With a final burst of speed, Jessica leapt onto a low ledge, using her height advantage to rain down blows on the drake. Her swords moved in a blur, each strike more precise than the last. She aimed for the wounds she had already inflicted, widening them with each hit.
[Cross Cut!]
[Cross Cut!]
[Cross Cut!]
[Cross Cut!]
[Cross Cut!]
Five times did she used her skill on the beast, and the drake’s roars grew weaker, its movements sluggish as blood loss took its toll.
Seeing her chance, Jessica launched herself from the ledge, plunging both swords deep into the drake’s chest. And in this moment, she used a skill to fully secure her advantage.
[Cyclone Cut!!]
And like a twisting point-blank spear, she dug deep and deeper into the drake’s underbelly…all to a point that her twin swords were able to pierce through.
It let out a final, ear-splitting scream before collapsing, its daggers clattering to the ground. Jessica staggered back, her body trembling with exhaustion and pain.
She had done it. The drake lay defeated, but the victory was a bitter one. Her wounds throbbed, and she could feel the blood soaking through her clothes. With trembling hands, she retrieved a healing potion from her belt, drinking it down in a single gulp. The magic worked slowly, mending the worst of her injuries but leaving her drained.
Jessica slumped against the cavern wall, closing her eyes for a moment. She had survived, but only just. The drake’s corpse lay still at her feet, a testament to her skill and determination. She allowed herself a brief moment of respite before forcing herself to stand.
As she did, Soril approached her with a proud smile.
“I…I did it.” she said as she was still pale from the exhaustion she gained from using her cyclone cut for the second time.
“Good job.” he said as he was genuinely happy of her achievement. And from this achievement, a secret door suddenly opened up out of nowhere, revealing the shrine to the two hunters.
“Looks like the shrine showed itself to us.” he said.
“W-what about the loot?” she asked.
“Oh right. Hmm, looks like the only loot the boss dropped was his daggers. Seeing how tough it was to even go against your skill, this is a great opportunity for you to change your weapon set.” he said as he picked up the two daggers on hand.
“Maybe, I don’t know if I’m even compatible to use it.”
“I guess your right. Oh well, if it doesn’t work out, we can always have it as our trophy for our first successful raid.” he said.
“Right, anyway, we also have the shrine with its reward…maybe that thing is just as valuable.” she said.
And as they approached the shrine, Soril expected that he would meet God once again…but to his expectations, nothing changed. The shrine was still in a flowing state in its time and Jessica was clearly seen following behind him.
‘…I guess God doesn’t intend to talk when it doesn’t involve anything serious. That’s good to know.’ he thought to himself as he approached shrine holding the skillbook which acted as the reward for this entire raid.
And from it, he gave this success to Jessica who happily accepted the shrine.
From her touch on the skillbook, the shrine glowed into a beautiful bluish light, showing that the skillbook was fully free to be taken. From here, the dungeon started to shake and soon enough, Soril and Jessica were taken out of the dungeon in flash of light. This was the sign that the dungeon was conquered and everything was finally over.
It was just a quick second but, already they were out. Out in the middle of the thick forest.
To finally end it all, Soril pulled out a flare gun from his mystical space bag and he fired it into the air.
Although it was clearly morning, the flare was good enough for the people to notice.
And with just one fire of his flare gun, minutes later, a chopper came by with the sight of Eric and his father coming by to pick them up.
From the sight of their happy faces, it was clear to the Young Family that the raid was successful. And seeing as how Jessica was clearly holding on to a skillbook, it made it clear to them that the two hunters decided to finish the dungeon, seeing as how the dungeon had no resource value.
Either way, all’s well that ends well.
