For I Am A Side Character - 49: Goblin King, A Goblin who's Different.
Dark and silent, with the only providing light being the scorching flame found behind a throne made from skull and bones.
The reeking smell of rotting flesh was pungent as rot could ever be. And because of this rot, the entire room was infested in rats and maggots that seems to be the liking of the monster residing in this end.
One strong sniff of the air, and you can already feel your head getting heavier, your vision getting blurrier, and you vomiting straight to the floor with no one to judge you.
All five of the hunters who walked into this room willingly felt this to be a chamber made for the dirtiest creature. A beast that simply owned his own living. A king perchance.
As they entered, the door made the distinctive function to close itself, leaving the five hunters to their own. And only when the monster was defeated inside will they be able to leave.
“God…this place is like a necromancer’s den. Khugh~!” said Juel as he struggled to not smell the air in the room.
“Try to breath through your mouth…it helps a lot.” said Jason as he looked around, searching for the monster who owned this room.
[Ember Light]
Casting in the magic from her staff, Jessabelle assisted the others in creating a ball of fire to lighten the room. This way, it could help them look for the goblin king. But the light created from her skill was not enough to fully envelope every inch and corner.
“Its weird, usually when you enter a boss room, you would meet the boss sitting in its throne, but he’s nowhere to be found.” said Juel as he tried looking at his sides.
“The room is quite large though. Its more bigger than I could have expected…almost about the size of around 3 stadiums.” said Audrey as she carefully looked around.
As they slowly moved closer and closer to the throne, Soril made sure to watch every dark corners that wasn’t affected by Jessabelle’s magic.
“…”
As they finally came to reach the throne, to Juel’s notice, he was able to see items in a chest right beside the throne.
“…there’s a few items here.” said Juel as he rummages through like a racoon.
“Are they good?” asked Jason as he was curious about the find.
“No…these items are low leveled. Their basic at best.”
“!?” seeing that, Jason noticed that from the chest, he then slowly made contact with the sight of a skull staring at him straight…it made him realized that aside from animals and goblins being put in the throne, there were also human skulls fixed into its design.
“My god…those items must have been from beginner hunters.” he said.
“Damn…there’s about five identical chestplates in here.” saying this, Juel felt horrible for the victims from the monster who resided in this room.
At the least, there must have been five victims to the goblin’s attacks, at the least…
And while they were distraught by the discovery of these victims, Soril and Audrey noticed a slight showing of bloodlust from a certain corner.
“…” keeping his silence, Soril raised his shield.
“He’s here.” said Audrey as she pointed her blade towards the upper corner of the room.
“…!?” and to Juel’s surprised, he found a beast who was crawling on all fours, sticking to the wall with its sharp claws and extending tails resembling that of a chimp.
Although its face resembled that of a goblin, from its long nose, green face and pointy ears, everything else however was completely different. It was like what stood before them was a completely new form of a monster. A monster that stood in the same height as that of a giant.
With its sharp teeth, drooling from it fuming and gaseous mouth that stank of death, its long neck that resembled that of a giraffe, layered with armor similar to the basic chestplates found beside the throne, its limbs similar to that of an orangutan, stretching at lengths similar to his neck, hairy yet tinted with the color of his charcoal hair, claws sharp enough to match a sword made from a blacksmith, a tail that seemed to have a mind of its own, twisting and wagging, almost as if it was searching for its next prey…and a crown made of ribcages, fitted for its head.
The monster before them simply smiled and spoke its intention.
“Bow…human.” in his coarse voice, he spoke.
The goblin king spoke the human’s languange.
“…” but to the hunter’s response, it was not as surprising as one could imagine. Because they know for a fact that some monsters do talk…
And although it is quite shocking to find this monster relating to that of a goblin talk, the five hunters had already assumed that maybe this monster was no longer something resembling that of a goblin…in fact, it never looked like one, aside from its face.
In his finished threat, the Goblin king leaps from the wall from which he was hanging from, and he falls straight to the floor.
*Boom!*
In his crash, he was found standing on his two legs and one tail at a height of about 25 meters tall…as he raises his arm, pointing his direction to who seems to have acted as a leader for this hunt; Juel. He spoke again.
“…Offer their heads, and I shall let you be set free.” said the goblin king as he puts on a hideous smirk.
“…” but in response to his taunts, all the five hunters simply raised their weapons at him. The four of them didn’t show a sign of fear, all looked determined to clash against the goblin king except for Juel who stood with shaking legs.
“Haaa….shame.”
And in his words, a fear inducing presence was suddenly made from his body. Like an explosive threat that showed the very level of power this monster had, It made some of them take a step back, sensing the danger before them.
Jessabelle felt overpowered by its presence, and so was Jason.
The only two who stayed their ground was Soril and Audrey.
‘…those two…aren’t they afraid??!’ thought Jessabelle as a cold sweat was dripping from her cheek.
“This presence…I’ve never felt it before…its more than a B-ranked monsters…its an A-rank!” said Jason.
“an A-ranked monster? that’s a first for me.” said Audrey as a smirk appeared on her face.
To her, it finally came. The chance to face off against a monster stronger than she was.
And in this chance, she was motivated. Coating her sword with Electricity, she smiled and spoke her mind.
“Jason…Jessabelle, back me up on this.” and with those words, Jessabelle dashes forward with a smile on her face.
With the Goblin King’s long limbs, he sways his hand forward, aiming down on Audrey. Fast like a speeding whip, the danger felt from his attack made anyone in the room shudder.
*Whaapak!*
And like the whip, its sound was crackling.
But he missed and Audrey was able to come at a close point with her sword.
[Lightning Skill – Lightning Step]
Having been able to use her skill, she was able to move slightly faster than the hands of the goblin king. With this advantage, she did not hesitate to attack him head on.
The moment she got in close to his knee, she activated another skill.
[Lightning Skill – Thundersnap]
In this skill, her entire body was enveloped with lightning. Flowing so naturally, she came in close to the Goblin King’s knee, and when her sword’s tip was able to touch even with just an inch deep, a large glowing light suddenly emerged from her attack, followed by a snapping crackle of a drumming thunder.
*Boom*
And then came an explosion.
As soon as the light faded, Audrey was back in place next to the other hunters. Feeling confident that her attack was effective, she thought she did well.
But as soon as she got a good look at the goblin king, she was surprised to see him being unscathed by one of her most powerful attacks.
“..I-impossible!” she said as she then saw the goblin king smirk with such a devious notion.
“…its not impossible, look!” as Jason pointed at the goblin king, he pointed to a certain part of the goblin king that made everyone in the group surprised.
“It wasn’t really clear because of the light caused by your attack, but he’s using a skill…” said Jessabelle as she had a understanding of the use of a skill, because of her genius.
And as she spoke, the goblin king was able to fall on all fours, standing like a dog would.
And to this form, it began to race towards them like a mad animal.
The moment he got close, he quickly swung both his arms. At this moment, action, all of the hunters were able to avoid the whip-like arms, but in their notion to try and avoid him, he used this chance to fire a beam of power from his tail.
[Release]
In this action, a beam of lightning similar to Audrey’s power was poured straight at Audrey’s direction. She tried to escape, but the flexibility of his tail was much more superior in its aim, so it was nearly impossible to escape its attack.
‘no! It’s following me!’ to her thoughts, she thought that she was going to be struck by his power, but before the lightning beam could reach her, a man suddenly appeared right before her…
[Heavy Block Stance]
With just this much, the beam of lightning was completely stopped from passing through. As the power continued to pour down on him, the moment it was starting to die down, a chance arose from this.
[Heavy Shield Counter]
To this action, what little bit of power left from the beam of lightning was struck back like a ball…and it was thrown straight at the face of the goblin king.
“!!”
*Boom!*
Its power was able to shook his head, leaving him in paralyzed state.
Seeing this chance, Jessabelle had enough time to gather information about the goblin king.
“.…From what it looked like from his power, he was able to absorb your attack…and he struck it back to us. Meaning that he must be capable of absorbing elemental powers. I’ve seen it being used by a slime before in the dungeon” said Jessabelle as she landed right next to Audrey and Jason.
“So we can’t use elemental powers?” asked Jason.
“maybe its not just elemental attacks, maybe its all magical attacks… so I think our only hope to fight back is with our physical attacks.” said Jessabelle.
“I’ll try to support you guys in the back…I can’t be the one to attack him directly because I barely have any physical attacks to use on him.” added Jessabelle.
“Alright, lets go guys.” soon as Jason lead first again, Juel followed by while Audrey remained somewhat shocked by some ordeal…
‘…that block skill…that stance of parry…there’s only one person I know capable of such a feat…’ in her thoughts, she stared at a certain person who simply had his eyes against the goblin king.
The very nature of that person she meet in the locked dungeon simply left a deep impression on her. The mystery of this person, from his acts, his skills, his strengths…each scene she had seen him do was remember like a clear film.
Although he didn’t talk much, a certain thought was brewing in the mind of Audrey…
‘is he really him?’
And in this thought, her curiosity simply won against her. So much so, that she blurted out her thoughts
“Are….are you the masked-” but before she could ask, she was interrupted by the sight of Juel being thrown straight to Soril. In this action, Soril was able to catch Juel, and to this, Soril simply moved on forth with a silent impression. It seemed like he did not hear her.
“…No, I can’t have myself be distracted by these thoughts… not right now.” seeing as how dangerous the moment was, she had to focus everything on the fight. If she didn’t everything would turn red.
Back to the fight. As the goblin king was able to gain back his focus, he had already thrown Juel away like a toy, while he was to face Jason on with his ever so slick perception.
[Arcane Sword Arts: 1st Blooming Sword]
As the goblin king tried to thrust his claws forward, Jason was able to parry each strike flawlessly. Being able to dodge it while having to move forward, Jason decided to end this quick.
At the point when the goblin king was being slowly cornered by Jason, he suddenly lowers his head. And to this act, he then proceeded with a large expulsion of gas from his mouth.
The gas was flammable and capable of being able to tear away fabric like acid could. And as soon as the gas was able to cover the entire floor, the goblin king simply caused a spark using his claws. The spark was then turned into a large fire, causing everything to burn.
Seeing this, all of the hunters tried to jump off of the ground to avoid the flames, but to this action, the goblin king was able to use his tail to swat them down like flies.
*Thuk*
*Thuk*
*Thuk*
Three of them were struck, crashing straight on the floor.
Juel, Soril and Jessabelle.
As they were sent crashing down, Jason continued to move in closer. As he was able to do so, at the right reach, he finally brought upon another skill.
[Arcane Sword Arts: 2nd Bloom: Crashing Petals]
In this action, two self made blade strikes were sent down straight to the Goblin King’s face, tearing away at his flesh like a butcher would.
“Khk!”
The pain enveloped by this skill, enraged the goblin king.
So much so, that he turned his tail to the flaming floors below and devoured the very flames he caused.
[Absorb!]
In this moment, each flame from the floor was being sucked in to his tail like a vacuum.
The flames were then turned into a fuel of fire that changed his body entirely.
From a simple green lanky monster, turned to a flamed filled devil, the moment the goblin king was able to open his mouth, a strong flow of gas was fired, almost like a spray, which followed next into it was a eternal fire breath.
Jason tried to block, but he was too close to the fire to even escape. When he did try, he was suddenly caught by the goblin kings right hand. Being caught like a rat, the goblin king slowly lowered his aim to strike down the trapped Jason.
“Shit! Shit!!” Jason tried to break free, but the strength of an A-ranked monster was way superior compared to him.
But in this act, Jessabelle came with five large mana spears. She threw it, aimed at the goblin’s mouth, and as it struck him, it caused the goblin king to miss his chance at burning Jason to a crisp.
But that was a mistake.
[Absorb]
Because the Goblin king was able to absorb the mana spears…turning him into a bluish mad monster. The mana spears were able to Increase his fire power.
In that moment, while Jason was trapped in the hands of the Goblin King, Audrey then swoops in and tried to free Jason away.
Having to land on the arm of the Goblin King, she swung her sword so hard, she thought that she could cut through it, but it was pointless.
The moment her Katana was able to strike the Goblin King’s hand, her sword broke into fragments. But her efforts were not in vain, her sword was able to cut through the flesh, but not pass the bone.
“!!”
Seeing this, she turned and felt threatened by the gaze brought upon by the goblin king. To which it was then followed by a breath of fire that was aimed at her and Jason. Seeing the fire brought upon them, they instinctively closed their eyes.
“…” but that never came, all they felt was the intense heat of the goblin king’s breath, but never the flame itself.
‘…!?’ when Audrey turned to her front, she found that Soril was there, protecting them against the flames.
“Here!”
In this moment, Soril threw his spare sword, the sword from which he bought from the merchant, and he gave it to Audrey.
“Try Again!” he said as he struggled to stay in place, protecting them.
And in her next effort, she slashes down. With a normal sword.
And when she did, the moment the sword was able to strike down, she was able to crack the bone.
This attack was so painful, it made the goblin king instinctively let go of Jason from his grasp.
“Gah!”
Swaying around, trying to get rid of the hunters staying on his arm, he swung it strong enough that it forced the hunters to jump off.
With that, the goblin king then proceeded to breath another batch of fire. But as he did, he came out empty. He’s bluish body has returned to normal.
“…he’s out.” said Juel.
“Okay, lets go!” seeing this, Jason, Audrey, Soril and Juel went and tried to rush their way to him again, but to this development, all of a sudden, the Goblin King was then eyeing the rushing hunters…
Thinking of what to do, he was certain that he was going to be attacked…he’s long arms were enough to some of those hunters but the others were simply capable of parrying, blocking and dodging them.
He had to do something else entirely.
So he shifted.
Saying that, he was able to create another breath of gas from his mouth.
Seeing this, they thought that he was going to be making another sea of fire, but that didn’t seem to be the case. The goblin king was breathing out so much gas that it started to envelope the entire room.
“….Shit, he’s going to blow this whole place up!” thought Juel.
One spark from their swords or magic, and that would lead them to an explosion capable of tearing this entire cave down on them.
Knowing so, they were careful. They ran at him at such a speed that when they got close, they were suddenly met with nothing.
“…he’s gone.” said Jason.
“Where is he?” asked Audrey.
“he probably ran away.” said Juel.
The 25 meter long goblin king was no longer in sight.
What only remained was the foul smelling fog of breath…
Or so it was.
The moment Juel saw that there was no longer a goblin king, he felt relieved…but the moment he let his guard down, he was suddenly struck down by the sudden attack of a mysterious enemy.
“Ahh!”
The pain of this attack as so much more painful that it simply knocked Juel out in that instant.
What remained were four hunters who were blinded by the fog of breath. Hearing Juel’s scream, they knew it wasn’t over.
“.…We can’t see anything with this, what should we do?” asked Jason.
“…Just keep your eyes focused…He’s still out there.” said Jessabelle.
“…” seeing as how thrilling this moment was, Audrey couldn’t help but cautiously turn at random corners of her eyes. Trying to listen to any form of attack coming their way.
In the state of it all, it would come to a point that they might be attacked once again…
Five seconds go by and with the help of the smell, they could barely concentrate fully.
Until finally, an attack was striked again.
And this time, a scream was heard from Jessabelle.
“Fuck!”
Being struck in the back, she was found rolling, but soon enough she got up and tried to focus on her surroundings.
‘God…I’m bleeding.’ she thought as she could feel her blood drip down from her back and straight to her legs. The cold feeling of her own blood simply left her feeling more nervous.
“Jessabelle, are you okay?” asked Jason.
“I’m fine…just…I…dammit.” soon enough, the pain from the goblin king’s attack was taking effect as Jessabelle was starting to turn cold. Her words were not making any form of sense as the seconds go by.
“Everyone gather around…the bastard is using the fog to hide himself…we can’t do anything because for some damn reason, he’s faster compared to before…” the one who said this was Soril.
He finally spoke up due to the situation laid before him.
‘…at this moment that bastard has probably transformed into his more faster form…we can’t catch him if he’s like that…so I can’t believe this, but I need to move this story along or it’ll get worse.’
Soon enough, Soril, Jason and Audrey were able to come at the palce where Jessabelle was found on one knee. Her back was seen with claw marks deep enough that it was able to see her some of her bones…
Her pale face was also clear ot the view…
Seeing the situation, Soril pulled out the System Point Store and he bought a healing potion.
Buying this for Jessabelle, he was left with…
[System Points: 18.5]
[Stat Points: 10]
“…Here, drink this.” seeing as how she was heavily breathing, Soril was able to give her the healing potion.
“W-where did you get that?” asked Jason.
“Focus in front of you!…We have to guard her while she heals…she’s the only person right now who’s capable of catching this guy.” said Soril angrily.
“…Haa…haa…what grade is this potion?” asked Jessabelle as she was able to have a sip of it.
“I don’t know…just drink it.” said Soril.
‘…’ meanwhile, as Jessabelle was consuming the potion, Audrey was somehow curious about the potion on her hands…to her, she remembered it will that the potion on Jessabelle’s hands were the same potion she was given in the Locked Dungeon…seeing this, it only confirmed her assumptions even more. And because of that, she was swiftly glancing at Soril with her side eye…thinking of the fact that he was the masked person…
But to her actions, he was caught by Soril who noticed that she was glancing at him.
“Focus Audrey…even with your lightning element, I don’t think you can catch up to him.” said Soril as his eyes were left staring upfront so intensely.
“S-sorry…”
As they guarded Jessabelle, Jason was able to soon notice that by the sight of the fog, he could see it move irregularly. Almost as if something was passing through it.
‘…God…he’s faster than we can comprehend…’ thought Jason as he tried his best in looking forward.
But even at his best, he could not find a single speck of his pace.
“…this potion is working its wonders…it must be a high grade right?” asked Jessabelle as she was soon seen fully recovered from the attack.
“Jessabelle…the moment that bastard comes by even at the slightest chance, you have to trap him using your flamestral vines.” said Soril.
“But the flames from those vines, it’ll cause everything in the fog to blow up.” she said.
“It doesn’t fucking matter…I’ll handle the fog.” the moment he said this, he raised his shield and he took a step forward.
Gripping his hand tightly, he swung his shield like a fan…but with an added zest to it.
[Heavy Slash.]
The moment he swung his shield, it created a path that was devoid of the fog.
The pressure from his swing was so powerful that it caused almost every fog in front of him to be pushed back.
Knowing that it worked, he did it at Jason’s front as well as Audrey’s front.
In this decision, the fog no longer touched the huddled four. As the three stood guard with Jessabelle in the middle, and with no fog to be turned into fire, she didn’t hesitated in casting her flamestral vines.
“…”
“…”
“…”
They waited…and waited…
For each second to pass by, it seemed like minutes were passing by.
Until finally…he came out from from Jason’s side out in the open.
“!?” and to Jason’s shock, the Goblin King who was once 25 meters tall was no more taller than two meters…
His limbs were just about the same as any goblin and his tail was as similar as that of the devil…
Wearing nothing but the armor of a basic hunter, the goblin king was simply just like that of a small goblin.
But by sacrificing his size, his ability to breath out a gaseous fog, and his defense, all he got was an overpowering speed.
And it might have been enough to kill them…but that wasn’t the case with these hunters.
[Arcane Sword Arts: 1st Blooming Sword]
In this moment, as the goblin raced to Jason, Jason’s body simply reacted in nature to try and figure out the best course of action in this scenario.
He thrusted his sword…and to it, the Goblin was able to react by reaching out his hand faster and try to deflect it away.
But as his hand meet with the sword, all of a sudden, another skill was made.
[Arcane Sword Arts: 2nd Bloom: Crashing Petals]
It wasn’t just a pair of lashing blades thrown out this time…it was four.
“!!?” the moment the goblin realized this, he was too late.
His hand was slashed into pieces…and in this action, in the moment when at the speed were barely Jason could follow, the chance that arose from his 2nd bloom simply caused Jessabelle to take notice.
And in that notice, without hesitation, she brought out her flamestral vines.
Quickly enough, the vines were able to reach out to the goblin, reaching out like a desperate hook.
And when the chance came that it was able to touch the goblin king, the goblin king quickly tried to get away from these vines, but that wasn’t enough…the moment he ran, the vines had already gripped in tight.
“Khk!” the goblin king tripped because of these vines, and seeing him fall like a fool, the three hunters quickly reacted.
One was through a devastating heavy slash in the legs.
One was a brightly flashy charging cut aimed at the chest.
And one was a heavenly piercing attack that simply was aimed at the heart.
These heavy attacks might not have been enough from the giant goblin King, but because of his sacrifice in gaining speed, his once strong bones were simply like twigs to the hunters.
In that moment, they had succeeded.
Knowing this, Soril quickly puts his weapons away and started making his way out to the door.
“…W-wait, where are you going?” asked Jason.
“Its done and I’m leaving.” he said in his cold tone.
“B-but what about the rewards?” asked Jason.
“Keep it.” without even stopping, Soril quickly reached the door and with just one push, he was able to open it.
“…” there he took a deep sigh and simply walked ahead. What waited for him on the other side was Jessica who was nervously smiling at him.
And without even a warning, she came and gave him a hug…a hug tighter than what a normal friend would give.
Although to Soril who thought it was just her way of doing things, to the others, it was a sign…
