For I Am A Side Character - 31: Soril Vs Jessabelle part 2
Technique…
Soril lacked technique.
Through the little days that he has spent in this world, he has yet learned a proper technique to utilize in his combat style. He has fought violently against all the challenges that passed to him merely by his own experience.
And although he was training under the school of the house of shadows, he has yet to be given permission to actually undertake their teachings.
So with his lacking technique, and all that was left of him was the instinct to swing a sword, it was reckless to decide that he would be fighting against one of the characters written in the book.
Fighting Jessabelle was simply a fool’s choice knowing the history he has against her. And he knows that it was a fool’s choice to fight…their level’s were simply to far apart for him to even consider fighting her.
But their was something that changed his mind.
The system offered him a reward.
Back when he was being talked to by Sergeant O’riley to have a duel against Jessabelle, before he could have rejected his request, the system in front of him proposed a side mission.
[[Side Mission #2: Defeat Jessabelle Morrison in a duel.]
[Rewards: Receive the Gift to Learn the Aranean Sword and Shield Form-style.]
[Time Limit: None.]
‘Aranean?’
Thinking of what this was, Soril was then reminded of the weapons he owned and was for sale in the [System Point Store].
He had no idea what the Aranean’s were, but since it’s history or at least its existence was stored in the system point store, it intrigued Soril quite a bit.
Knowing the great quality of those weapons, he thought that maybe the Aranean’s were probably more than just a weapon stored in the system point store, maybe they were a group of brave warrior’s with a great history. And also, knowing the reward, he would get the chance to learn from these warriors. It’s a great opportunity to actually gain these skills.
The Only issue with this is the fact that he had to win against Jessabelle.
It wasn’t going to be easy…and he had no confidence whatsoever in coming out of this uninjured. But he had the confidence strong enough to actually go through with the challenge.
Weighing in the pros and cons of this mission…he decided that he would take her on.
***
As he stood in the center of the clouds of dust brought upon by the dozens of Mana spears thrown by Jessabelle, he prepared himself for the worst that was to come.
“…” at first he decided to test his ability to fight her in a ranged battle using his Mana spear on her. Firing over a dozen of them, influenced by his emotion [mana rush], they were much stronger than normal.
But he knew these attacks weren’t enough. He had to face her and put her in a position where her weakness would be shown.
In other words, Her weak physical body.
He could barely see through the clouds of dust when he attacked, but even with it, he could tell where she stood and where she was…simply enough, her presence was just that big.
As he took his chance to attack, he noticed that Jessabelle then took the initiative and fired a ginormous ball of fire. Thinking of it, he knew what she was planning.
So he prepared himself for what he had to do next.
With his shield upfront, he ran towards the ball of fire and with every second counting, he knew what was going to happen next. The moment the fireball exploded, he used the forced behind its explosion as tool in his momentum to escape her sights.
Jessabelle willfully exploded the ball of fire, with its pressure strong enough to even move the winds away, to this attack, she was able to have a clear sight in front. With no more dust clouds in sight, she expected to see Soril in cinders, but to her surprise, she found nothing.
“…!?”
But even to his disappearance, she knew that that attack wasn’t enough for someone like Soril.
So she looked at all directions, even above…and to this decision, she saw Soril up above the air with a gathered buster of Mana spears, already falling halfway.
In that moment, she didn’t know how he was able to go up that high, but it didn’t matter, she had to quickly respond to his attacks.
“!!” to it, she quickly used her Flamestral vines to wipe out the incoming mana spears.
One by one, they were taken out… She knew that his skills and tricks weren’t enough to beat her. As she sees him fall from the sky, she then prepared her next attack. But as she tried to conjure a mana cannon, she was then interrupted by a mana spear that came out of nowhere. It struck her out of her surprise and she lost focus of manifesting the mana cannon.
‘!?’ curious to where that spear came from, she saw that on the place where Soril had hid himself in the clouds of dust, she could see traces of mana spears not her own. And they were left their by Soril himself to act as a distraction. When she tried to turn back to Soril up in the air, she was too late. As for the next second that came, Soril had already landed in front of her at quite a tremendous speed.
As he landed down at an irregular rate, she wondered how it was possible for him to do such a thing.
‘How!? just a second ago, he was up there…it would have taken two more seconds before he landed!’ she thought.
But to her question, she could not get the answer…because before she could…Soril had already swung his sword at her.
*Swing~–!*
The force of his swing was powerful.
“!?” in her quick action, she defended herself in a full scale mana shield in the shape of a ball.
But despite having to instinctively use a mana shield to protect herself, Soril was able to left her whole body up into the air, as if he was swinging at a ball with a bat.
“Khk!!” struggling with all his might, he batted her out of her place, throwing her near out the stage…
*Booof—!*
She landed, right before she could fall from the stage.
“…” silently shocked by this, she turned to Soril and tried to gather her thoughts as fast as she could…but already, Soril didn’t take the chance to give her the time to think.
For what came next, four spears fell from the sky, and each one was influenced by his mana rush.
*Thud!*
*Thud!*
*Thud!*
*Thud!*
Each one fell like a cannon…and each one dealt great damage to her shield…
In just a matter of seconds, her shield started to crack like ice and to it, Soril came dashing forward her and with the posture and position where he inclined himself in the act of stabbing her.
“!?” shocked by his action, she unconsciously tried to raise her hands up to protect herself.
*Thud!!*
And through this action, the sword went through…but it wasn’t enough to reach her.
“.…”
“…”
The two stared at each other, separated by the very shield that she put up.
With Soril holding his sword like a dagger, he glared at Jessabelle, thinking what he would do next…
In this sudden occurrence, she felt cornered…and she saw the expression that Soril had brought in front of her.
It was cold.
He was quick to attack…quick to his decision…he swings his sword when necessary…he use his environment to his advantage…he did what he had to do.
To her…it felt like she was being hunted like an animal…and it made her nervous.
Not once has she felt this way…not against the dungeons, nor against the students in the academy…she felt cornered.
But it wasn’t enough…she still had the confidence inside of her that she always had.
The confidence to crush her enemies.
As Soril stood in front of her with a cold gaze, she, with her great talents in magic, used her unique skill.
Without chanting, she was able to conjure a single Flamestral vine from beneath Soril’s foot, and to it, she was able to wrap it around him.
“!??” being caught off guard by this, Soril tried to quickly cut off the vine, but before he could, Jessabelle had already made the conscious decision in her actions.
In just one single sway of her hand, the vine tossed him up into the air.
“!!!”
It gave her the chance to gather her thoughts during that time…and to it, she quickly readied herself.
“This was supposed to be a work in progress, but I’ll make an exemption on you, a live target…Fusion Skill: Flame spear…” in this mention, she combined two of her powerful attacks, both the mana spear and the fireball..with it, she created a new skill that was never mentioned in the first volume of the book.
“!?” Soril saw the spiraling form of a flaming attack, to it, he felt the dangers coming from that spear…
Thinking to himself, if he took it on, he would probably take in more damage than done and if she had the capacity to control it just like her other spears, then his lost was set in sight.
‘Fuck!’
But he didn’t falter, instead, he conjured three mana spears in front of him as he fell, and in this quick second of action, he forcefully merged the three like clay.
“Khk!!?”
The spear merging together formed into a form of cavalry that was then evolving into a spiraling drill. A turning drill-spear in midair was formed.
In the rash action and decision, he felt a tremendous pain over his head…like he was being hammered by a pike and was losing consciousness midair.
In this experiment, he created a large mana spear in just a mere second and with a single willful call, he fired the merged spear straight to Jessabelle’s way.
In that moment, he felt like passing out…
Not once has he ever tried doing such a spell, but because he did, he was burdened by the drawback of using such a complex spell.
…
Dazing in and out of his consciousness, he was not certain what happened then…
In the blink of an eye, he noticed an explosion down below him…and the next…he felt the flames rise up into the the air…it felt like his skin was being roasted…
*Thud!*
And in the next second, he fell to the floor with no proper control over his body.
“…ahhh…–” soon, he slowly raised his body up high and felt pain rush over his chest. In that moment, he knew that he fell chest first into the ground…and then he suddenly lost strength and laid himself to the floor.
‘…fuck–that was fucking reckless…a stupid idea…I should probably never do that again…’ he thought as he laid internally bleeding on the floor.
As the seconds passed, he felt his mind starting to collect itself.
Ten seconds passed and nothing has yet happened to him after his attack.
He didn’t know what happened to Jessabelle, but he felt a burning sensation right on top of his head.
‘Why does it feel so hot in here…God…what the fuck happened…?’
In this question, he slowly gathered his strength to see what was in front of him, and as he raised his head, he was shocked to find Jessabelle uninjured and was in flames.
“…” speechless, it felt like he was looking at a burning star…and that star was simply looking at him as if she was filled with a glaring rage.
“Soril!!” and in that moment, he also heard the cries of Jessica from the side.
‘…for real…what happened?’
In that question, in front of him was a glaring angel.
***
It was before Soril had conjured his triple-sized mana spear, below, Jessabelle was found ready to fire her Fire spear at him, confident that she would do much damage, she knew that with this attack, she can finally put this whole rage within her and push them away…
But when she saw that Soril was above there…looking at here with a look that had no sense of fear in front of her fire spear, she felt insecure for some reason…it was as if she was doubting herself for a second.
But she shook her head and focused back on her attack…but the moment she did, she had seen Soril conjure up a spear that felt more powerful then that of hers…
“…What is that?” she asked herself.
Next thing she knew, Soril had thrown his spear down in mere seconds
And to it, the fear brought by the falling spear made her flinch…it made her fire her fire spear in fear.
And because she was slower when firing her spear, the moment those two spears collided, the explosion was near enough to affect her, but not Soril.
She felt a tremendous amount of flames push her off of her feet and to it, she lost her balanced, and she was then rained down by the effects of her flames…
“!!”
As if it was raining down fire, she had taken in this much flames…as well as the raining mana that came from Soril’s attack.
Both mana and Flame came raining down and her.
In the form of her pain, the flames and mana started to merge with one another…into her skin.
The pain was very much unbearable, which not long after, she lost consciousness yet her body remained moving.
And soon, when her body got back from her fall, she stood up, as if she was an entirely different person.

In front of him was a glaring angel, where she stood burning like a star…
And as she burned, she was seen grinning ever so deviously
“Kh-!?” Soril, not knowing that this would happen, was pushed back by the force brought upon by the flames that surged all over her body.
“!?” out in the distance, Professor Morrison was shocked to find his daughter in flames…there, Morrison knew what had happened to her daughter.
