Chapter 62: Dragon Hatching

“Excuse me, Ike-sama. I hope I’m not interrupting…?”

I was doing some administrative work like checking the payment within my territory when Melcott came into my office with an apologetic expression on her face. 

“What’s wrong, Melcott?”

It was truly unusual for Melcott to show that kind of face, since she always did her job flawlessly. By the way, my wife, Luna, was taking a dip in the hot spring with Alisa. While I would like to join Luna in the hot spring, but I couldn’t deny that there were certain topics that could only be talked about between fellow women. Hence why I decided I shouldn’t intrude between their girls’ time.

It’s not like I’m jealous or anything!

“Actually, there’s something I need to report…”

“To report? Alright. Go on then.”

“It’s about the dragon egg I’ve been looking after.”

“Ooh! The one I asked you to look after.”

Right. I had left the dragon egg in her care. Now that we had solved the matter with Lycoris and created a solid foundation with the Elf Kingdom, I believe we had successfully evaded the bad end as per dictated by the original storyline in Fortune Lover. Luna and I shouldn’t have to face a miserable death anymore. Besides, we had Yggdrasil leaves with us now. We could accelerate the growth rate of the dragon egg, enough for it to hatch. That being said, timing was an extremely important factor here. 

Newborn creatures typically consider the first being they saw as their parent, or to be short, imprinting. Since we had received the dragon egg, I wanted the dragon to hatch when Luna and I were both present. 

“That’s right. My apologies, but I believe you need to take a look at this.”

“This is the dragon egg I left in your care?!”

“That’s right. The dragon egg Ike-sama entrusted to me somehow turned black. I’ve never seen anything like this before. This might be a black dragon egg.”

“Black dragon?!”

Huh? But I thought you couldn’t tell what kind of dragon would hatch just by looking at the appearance of the egg? Unless we know from what dragon nest this egg was taken, we shouldn’t be able to tell what kind of dragon would hatch just from the egg’s appearance alone. 

“As Ike-sama might know, black dragons typically have a volatile temperament. Considering there are many people living in Sulfur, it would be best to dispose of this egg before it becomes a bigger issue.”

Melcott said with a serious expression on her face. 

“Ahh. Did you warm it with the hot spring water by any chance?”

“How did you know…?”

“Well, that’s because the sulfur in the hot spring can cause the eggshell to turn black. Anyway, we won’t know if it’s a black dragon egg or not until it hatches, right?”

The real reason for the color change was actually the sulfur in the water. The proteins in the eggshell might turn black because of sulfur. 

“I didn’t think the hot spring water would cause that kind of reaction! My apologies. The water is so amazing in relaxing one’s body, so I thought the water would be good for the egg as well…”

“No need to worry about it, Melcott. You didn’t soak the egg in water that was too hot, right?”

If she did, we would be having a boiled dragon egg instead of dragon hatchling. 

“Of course. I made sure to cool the water to about human body temperature before placing the egg in it.”

“I see. Well, it’s a dragon egg after all. It should be quite resilient. Anyway, let’s consider this matter solved.”

“I appreciate your leniency.”

Melcott said, bowing her head. 

“It’s not a big deal. Ah, right. Leave the egg here. I will take care of the dragon egg from now on. Thank you for your hard work, Melcott.”

“No, it’s an honor to be able to serve you. You’ve truly grown into a fine lord, Ike-sama.”

Melcott’s voice grew thinner at the end, but I could still hear her clearly. Her tone was laced with a gentle kindness, almost parental. That being said, Melcott was mistaken about one thing.

“I’m going to keep on growing from here on. I have my beloved Luna by my side after all. I need to grow even more for her sake… I will be counting on you too, Melcott.”

“Understood. If there’s anyone who stands in the way of Ike-sama’s path, I will be sure to eliminate all of them.”

I didn’t really need her to go that far actually. I didn’t have any grand ambition. I only wanted to lead a simple and happy life with Luna. 

“Alright. Let’s try wrapping the dragon egg with the Yggdrasil leaves.”

I said as I took out the Yggdrasil leaves I had received from Veiron, the King of Elf. In the original storyline, Yggdrasil leaves were an important material to create an elixir, but since I already had this in my hands, I might as well use it to accelerate the dragon egg’s hatching rate. 

“Okay… That should do it…”

The dragon egg turned into a beautiful green. Unlike ordinary plants, Yggdrasil was filled with magic power. As a result, the magic power flowing through the veins of the leaves caused the egg to glow in ethereal green light, which reminded me of the way the sunlight filtered through the trees in a peaceful forest. 

“…How beautiful. It looks like I’m looking at a high-quality emerald.”

Melcott murmured and I shared the same sentiment as her. However this glowing phenomenon wouldn’t last long. While adult dragons were overflowing with magic power, but they weren’t born with high magic power. The magic power actually accumulated over time through the magic they consumed in the air and from eating prey. That was how the dragon grew stronger. And… Dragon already started absorbing magic power during their egg stage. So, what would happen if I kept enveloping the egg with leaves filled with high-quality magic power? The answer was simple. The dragon would be born strong.

That being said, it would take time for the dragon to absorb the magic power from the Yggdrasil leaves. It wouldn’t suddenly hatch right away. At least, that was what I knew based on my knowledge from the original storyline. 

“If things go well, the egg should hatch tomorrow. Melcott, I’m sorry to ask you this but could you tell Luna to come here around noon tomorrow?”

“Understood. I will come by again with Luna-sama tomorrow.”

Melcott bowed before leaving the room. 

“Alright. Let’s get back to work.”

Thanks to my experience as a worker in a black company, I was accustomed to working late into the night. But! I didn’t want to relive that part of my life anymore! I planned on finishing the remaining work before night so I could spend the rest of my day with Luna. 

However… I had forgotten something. 

The dragon egg had been soaked in sulfur water by Melcott. Sulfur was an important material in alchemy. And now… I had enveloped the dragon egg with Yggdrasil leaves. The combination of the magic power from Yggdrasil leaves and the alchemy reaction from the sulfur… 

The egg started cracking, eliciting a sharp sound in the quiet office and…

“Kyuiii!!”

Something emerged from between the Yggdrasil leaves…

“Oh, what a surprise…”

A healthy baby dragon with glossy black scales had just been born.
