Chapter 47: The Capital of the Elf Kingdom, Spine

“Welcome to the capital of the Elf Kingdom, Spine.”

Lycoris said excitedly. We were at the capital of the Elf Kingdom, Spine. In front of us, stood the gigantic sacred tree, Yggdrasil. Together with Luna, Marsha-nee, and Alisa, we came to the Elf Kingdom at the request of Lycoris, the third princess of the Elf Kingdom. 

“I’ve never been to the Elf Kingdom before… The view is simply… Magnificent.”

Luna said, her eyes seemed to be sparkling. That expression alone was so precious to me. Phew… Luna was so adorable no matter what kind of expression she had. 

“Yeah.. I’ve only seen pictures of it in the books at my house. The Elf Kingdom really looks amazing in person.”

Marsha-nee also had an astonished look on her face. Getting to see the scenery you had never seen before was definitely one of the pleasures of traveling. Our main objective was to defeat the Demon Lord Worshiper plaguing the Elf Kingdom. I planned on dealing with them as fast as I could so I would be able to enjoy the rest of the trip leisurely. 

By the way, the dragon egg I had received from Marsha-nee was being taken care of by Melcott while I was away. 

“I agree… But still, is it okay for Alisa to come along as well?”

I asked while looking at Alisa, who was standing behind me. The elves worshiped the Yggdrasil, not the Holy God. The Great Holy Tree religion revered the sacred tree, Yggdrasil, as the source of all life. To put it simply… Yggdrasil was considered as the God in this country. Alisa was the saintess from another religion. Her presence wouldn’t be welcomed by the elves.

“Ike-sama, I appreciate your concern. But it’s fine. I’m here as Alisa Vanded. I’m not here as the Saintess of the Holy God. Any resemblance between Alisa Vanded and the Saintess of the Holy God is just a mere coincidence.”

“How does that logic even work…?”

Alisa said that with a bright smile on her face, which left me momentarily dumbfounded. Now then. When people think of ‘elf’, the first thing that came to mind must be… Long life. Beauty. Pride. All those words were right. All the stereotypical perceptions about elves were right. 

“Don’t tell me… Lycoris-sama?! Why?! Why would you invite those barbaric humans to our kingdom?! Besides, I found it hard to believe that those barbaric humans could be useful to us!”

An elf knight clad in light armor came running to us. 

“You’re being rude, Eve. These esteemed individuals have saved me in my time of crisis and defeated one of the leaders of the Demon Lord Worshipers. I requested their help based on their great merit.”

“These humans..? Humph! I don’t think they have what it takes to defeat the Demon Lord Worshiper!”

Eve puffed her cheeks up as she spoke to Lycoris. ‘These humans’, huh… That insult definitely aimed at Luna too. I definitely couldn’t let any sort of insult, both directly and indirectly, at Luna slide.

“So… You want us to show you our true abilities?”

“As if humans like you could stand against us, elves. However, if you insist on showing off, I will spare you some of my time.”

For some reason, this person had an extremely haughty look on her face. 

“I see. In that case, please watch closely.”

I raised my hand to the sky and…

“Activate—Beginner Magic, Fireball.”

I cast a fire magic circle. 

“Huh? Beginner magic? Are you mocking me now?”

I ignored Eve’s words and channeled my magic power to create a gigantic fireball to appear above me. 

“Hiii-?! What’s with the size of that fireball?! Absolutely ridiculous! There’s no way that’s beginner level magic!”

Eve’s smug expression immediately changed into one of utter shock.

“So? Is this good enough for you?”

Well, I only wanted to threaten her anyway. This should be good enough. 

“Ye-Yes… I-I was mistaken. Please forgive my rudeness, esteemed guests of Her Highness, Princess Lycoris.”

“Very well. I hope we can work well together.”

“Tha-Thank you for your generosity.”

Eve, who was on the verge of tears, was kneeling down and bowed her head at us. 

“My apologies, Ike-sama. I hope you didn’t take any offense in her words?”

Lycoris asked, looking guilty. 

“I personally don’t really mind it, but… If Luna were to feel slighted, I couldn’t tell what I will do…”

“I will keep that in mind. Now then, allow me to guide you. Eve, return to your post and reflect on what you’ve done.”

“Lycoris-sama… Yes. Understood.”

Eve trudged away. Her hunched back made her look really pitiful. Somehow… Her expressive nature made it hard for me to dislike her. 

Once Eve was out of sight, Lycoris turned to face me. 

“Ike-sama, I apologize for my people’s rudeness once more. Though you’ve been gracious with your words, but if your anger has not subsided… I will compensate you to the best of my ability. Please, do find it in your heart to forgive us.”

Lycoris seemed genuinely concerned about my feelings, even though I was the one that should mind my manners, not her…

“I really don’t mind it, but is there any particular reason why you’re so worried about this?”

“…Well, it’s not that I’m trying to hide it, but… Eve has been my attendant since I was a child. Despite the difference in our status, she’s one of my few… No, she’s the only friend I have.”

Lycoris sighed before she continued on. She had a very serious look on her face. 

“Of course, I fully understand I shouldn’t put my personal feelings before political issues, but… I beg of you…”

Although Lycoris’ friendship with Eve wasn’t described in detail in the game, but I could tell that they were very close. Friends that you could trust unconditionally were surely few and far between in life. I actually envied her for having someone like Eve in her life. 

Me and Luna? Well, we are husband and wife after all. I wholeheartedly trust Luna with my life. 

“Like I said earlier, I don’t really mind it, but Lycoris-sama is this concerned… How about if we consider nothing ever happened in the first place?”

“…Thank you very much. I will be sure to repay this favor one day.”

“I see… Oh, I know. How about you show us around the capital once we’ve resolved your issue with the Demon Lord Worshiper?”

“…Ike-sama, your benevolence truly knows no bounds. Very well. Once the issue with the Demon Lord Worshipper is settled, I will show you all to my special place.”

Lycoris said with a gentle smile adorning her face.
