Chapter 40: The Ultimate Battle : Demonized Orthrus

“So this is the power of demonification…! How wonderful! The power!! The power is surging throughout my body! Ahh! How dazzling!”

Demonized Orthrus laughed loudly. He was clad in glossy black armor, but rather than armor… It was more like a flesh. The armor itself seemed like a living entity. One thing for sure, he had become something different, something entirely inhuman. 

“Becoming one with the Demon Lord, huh…”

Having played the original Fortune Lover game over and over again, I could tell. This guy was still far from being the true Demon Lord. In Fortune Lover, the Demon Lord was described as an incarnation of horror. Anyone would feel terrified at the sight of the Demon Lord and yet, I didn’t feel anything from this guy. Well, to be fair, his status should be at least on the level of a mid-boss. 

The problem was… This was someone who never appeared in the original game. 

I took the Staff of the Dragon Star out.

“Die!! Dark Horizon!!”

Orthrus fired some sort of black beam-like attack. 

“Crimson Cannon. Wind Storm.”

I countered Orthrus’ Dark Horizon attack with my own. 

“Oooh… Impressive. I didn’t expect you would be able to get rid of my attack that easily. But… How about this?!”

Orthrus cast a large number of black magic circles. There were at least a hundred of them.

“You definitely can’t evade this one, let alone block it! Behold! This is the power of the Demon Lord! A befitting punishment for a mere human who dares to defy the Demon Lord!! Eat this!!”

“Like I said… So what?”

I deployed an even greater number of magic circles and met his attack head on. I thoroughly obliterated Orthrus’ attack with my own. After I neutralized his attack, I tried to hit Orthrus with my own set of magic spells, but he narrowly avoided my attack.

“Ugh! It hurts! So you’re the one that annihilated the ogre horde! But, there’s one thing you’re forgetting! Mages like you are weak in a close combat battle! It’s a basic strategy! A universal truth!!”

As he said so, Orthrus closed the distance between us in an instant. His arm transformed, changing into sword-like shapes. 

Good grief, this guy really liked to talk. 

“Physical Enhancement.”

I did a half-turn, avoiding the path of Orthrus’ sword. Now that Orthrus was leaning forward, I kicked him in the face with my right foot.

“Wha-What?! Ugh-!”

Orthrus staggered, looking clearly flustered.

Like I said, so what?

“Ho-How…?! Mages are supposed to be weak in close combat!”

“I don’t know who made that rule, but… My forte is in physical enhancement magic.”

I launched another kick on Orthrus, rotating my hip and putting my weight into the kick. Orthrus was sent flying from the impact and I quickly deployed a multitude of magic circles to surround him.

“Now then. My wife is waiting for me. Mind if I wrap this fight up now?”

“Ugh… What a vile smile you have.”

Vile smile? Shouldn’t he have said a villainous grin or something instead? Besides, I wasn’t even smiling. My facial muscles just twitched on their own from the stress of being away from my wife for far too long. 

“It’s not over yet… I can’t let it end yet! At least…”

Orthrus then deployed a massive eye above his head. If that eye could cause some sort of explosion… Things would become troublesome. I glanced over at Luna.

I cast a defensive spell around Luna (and Arisa and the others as well, but who cares?) and around the whole perimeter of Sulfur City. 

“Creeping Death. Seeker of Darkness.”

Within a split second, I felt something passing by. 

“I see, I see… There you are… Shadow Move.”

However, I was too focused on the big eye in the sky, since that thing was far too sinister to be ignored. 

“Don’t tell me…?! I won’t let you!!”

I ran back to Luna as fast as I could. I didn’t expect Orthrus was using the same type of magic as Automatic Search! 

“Darn it! Physical Enhancement!!”

If the shield got broken by Orthrus’ spell and Luna was so surprised by the impact that she fell on her butt and got hurt in return… I couldn’t. My heart couldn’t remain calm.

Just as I feared, Orthrus suddenly appeared right in front of Luna. 

“Wha-What?!”

However, Orthrus’ attack was repelled by the shield I had cast beforehand.

“Drop dead, you trash!!”

“UGAH-?!”

I swept Orthrus away with the Staff of the Dragon Star. 

“I-Ike-sama…”

“I’m sorry, Luna… For making you feel scared.”

What… Upon closer look, I realized there was a thin scratch on the shield. Because of that, Luna had a startled look on her face. 

“Even though my attack was supposed to be perfect…! Ugh! Everything you do pisses me off!!”

Orthrus kept spouting something, but I was too furious to care what he said. 

“You…. You bastard… Be prepared. I won’t leave a speck of you left in this world.”

I said as I prepared a massive magic circle to attack Orthrus. I wouldn’t be satisfied unless I obliterated him with all of my power. Ahh, I had lost my temper and to make matters worse, this bastard dared to lay his hand on my wife!

“Ummm… Ike-sama, is that thing trying to hurt you?”

Luna asked me. 

“Yeah, that’s right. But I will take care of him soon, so please wait a little longer.”

I tried to reassure Luna, but then she started muttering under her breath that sounded like a curse. 

“Unforgivable, unforgivable, unforgivable… How dare he cause trouble to my Ike-sama… Even though I’ve been holding myself back and yet you… Someone who doesn’t even know him, dare to… I will never forgive you.”

“Lu-Luna…?”

Luna’s eyes suddenly lost their shine. 

“I’m… I’m the only one who can support Ike-sama. You’re there, right?! I know you are! The thing within me… Lend me your power!!”

Luna shouted and then, she was suddenly enveloped in bright light.

“Luna!!”

Do-Don’t tell me…?! Luna is going to fall into darkness and become the final boss?! But if that happens then…! Well, if that happens that means the whole world is OUR enemy. As simple as that really. 

“Ugh-?! What?! This light… Is it holy power?!”

Groaning, Orthrus covered his eyes. 

“…Beautiful.”

Alisa murmured. Oddly enough, I actually shared the same sentiment as Alisa. 

“I will become the most important thing to Ike-sama and Ike-sama will become the most important thing to me in this world… That is my privilege. My exclusive privilege as Ike-sama’s wife.”

Pure white wings spreading on Luna’s back. She was floating in the air. Light enveloping her. Luna had literally become an angel.
