Chapter 19: The Situation at the Comet Village

“The situation is worse than I thought.”

We had arrived at a village near the western mountains along with the Saintess’s entourage. This village was called Comet Village. 

On our way here, we could see the surrounding area had been drastically wrecked by the Black Dragon. Normally, the western mountains were a region where you could enjoy the beautiful and peaceful nature scenery, but now… There was not a hint of its beauty. We must defeat the rampaging Black Dragon. Of course, I had to do it while also culling anything that could pose a threat to me and Luna. 

“U-Umm… Ca-Can I please have something to eat? Please, have mercy on me.”

At the entrance of Comet Village, a girl with short brown hair approached me. Just from a single glance alone, I could tell the girl was emaciated, probably because of lack of food in here. 

“Wait a moment.”

I returned to the carriage and took out some of the little food we had. I planned on telling them to just take out my portion of the food later. There shouldn’t be any problem in that case. Besides, it was clear to see that the villagers were suffering more than me.

“I’m sorry that you need to struggle in this hardship. For the time being, eat this to stave off the hunger. I will send someone to help this village soon.”

“Tha-Thank you so much..!”

The girl with short brown hair bowed her head to me vigorously. 

“Ike-sama.. How kind you are…”

Luna gazed at me with adoring eyes, but I wasn’t being particularly kind or anything. This was my duty as someone born into the Hanbulg family. 

Sure, I could abandon the villagers if I wanted to, but if I did that, I would be following the same path as the original Ike Hanbulg.

“By the way, could you tell me where the village chief’s house is? I’d like to have a word with the village chief.”

“I-If it’s alright with you, I can lead you there…!”

“Thank you. May I know your name?”

“Ye-Yes! My name is Yuri!”

“Yuri, huh. I’m Ike and this is my wife, Luna.”

“Nice to meet you, Yuri. My name is Luna.”

Luna said with a gentle smile. 

“So-So beautiful…”

Yuri muttered as if she was in a daze. 

“O-Oh my.. Yuri-san is adorable too.”

“Fueh-! Tha-Thank you…!”

Wha-What?! Luna was blushing…?! She had the expression of a typical romantic comedy heroine…! If this scene were to happen in Fortune Lover… This would definitely a CG scene! A blushing Luna… What an extremely rare expression! But… I would love to be the one to bring that expression out from Luna… Darn it! Was this… Jealousy?!

Moreover, the mood between Luna and Yuri seemed to be quite good… I could see flowers blooming between them. 

“Ugh…! I will say it from now on too…!!”

But I needed to find the right moment to say it. The risk of Luna not liking it when I said that scared me, but… The risk was worth taking if I could see that expression again!

“Then, please allow me to lead you the way…!”

“Yeah, thank you for your help, Yuri-san.”

We then started walking with Yuri leading the way.

First, let’s hear the situation from the village chief. I mean, I can see that things are quite bad in the village, but we still need to hear the words from the people actually living here to get a better understanding of the situation. As I started to follow Yuri from behind..

Luna whispered in my ear.

“Ye-Yeah. What’s the matter, Luna?”

“Knowing you, I’m sure you’re planning to bear the burden of the food we just gave away yourself. Please, at least share the burden with me 50-50. I want to share both the joys and hardships by your side, Ike-sama.”

Luna said so with a gentle smile on her face. That was too unfair. She was just too incredibly cute!

“I-I see… Tha-Thank you…”

Ahhh! I could feel my face growing hot! I couldn’t bear to look at Luna in the face! I wanted to be the one to make her look bashful, but I was the one getting done instead!

Chapter 20: Who Else Other Than Me?

“I’m the village chief of Comet Village, Rizak. It’s an honor to meet you, Saintess-sama and Ike-sama, the son of our lord. However, I deeply apologize that I’m not able to offer much hospitality to you all.”

We were in the house of Rizak, the village chief of Comet Village. Luna, me, the village chief, Alisa and Lancelot, all five of us were sitting around the table in the drawing room. 

The drawing room was neat, but somewhat dusty. This was to be expected though. Survival was their top priority now. Cleaning would fall down on the list of survival. I could say this because I used to work at a black company myself. 

“And so, may I know what brings you here today? I believe you have already seen the current state of our village…”

“That’s right. We’re here to defeat the Black Dragon that has been rampaging around this area.”

“””Huh?”””

Everyone, including Luna, was flabbergasted at my bold statement. After all, Alisa only asked me to investigate, not to subjugate. However, we couldn’t afford to dilly dally at this point. The lives of the villagers were at stake. Moreover, this also served as a good opportunity for me to raise my standing. If I could defeat the Black Dragon, the honor would work in my favor when I had to clash with the hero in the future. Having the public behind my back would prove to be advantageous for me. I had to do everything I could to prepare for an all-out war with the hero after all. Everything for the sake of my happy future with Luna!

“My lord’s son… You will defeat the dragon…?”

Rizak voiced his doubt. To be fair, he was voicing the doubt everyone was thinking. 

“Yeah. Who else other than me?”

“My apologies if I’m being rude, but please reconsider. I don’t think that creature is something a human can handle.”

“I see, but…”

I calmly responded to Rizak’s words. 

“You’re not the one to decide that, I’m the next in line to be the head of the house. Anything that dares to attack a village under my territory, be that it’s a dragon or whatever, I will be sure to make it pay for its actions. I will personally handle the dragon myself.”

The room fell silent after I finished speaking. Everyone, except Luna, was looking at me with an open mouth. 

Maybe I should phrase my words better…

“I may have come off a bit brazen back then, my apologies.”

“No-No… I’m the one that should apologize for overstepping my limit. I’m truly sorry, Ike-sama.”

As the lord’s son, I was above him in term of societal position. From Rizak’s point of view, I was someone he had to treat with care. Any offense could lead to a horrible punishment. A punishment this decimated village couldn’t afford. It was normal for him to feel intimidated when I showed any hint of displeasure. I needed to be careful. I would only end up making more unnecessary enemies if I got too emotional.

“However… If I may be honest, I’m genuinely surprised to see how much Ike-sama thinks of the villagers. I guess the rumors about you being a lazy bum were nothing but false rumors. This Rizak is truly moved by Ike-sama’s devotion.”

“I’m just doing what I should’ve done, regardless of the bad rumors floating around about me.”

“No, this is definitely out of the ordinary. I’ve heard many other lords rule their territory with an iron fist. In fact, the village my daughter married off too… Anyway, I heard she’s planning to escape from that village soon, but if she were to return to Comet Village now… Unfortunately, we’re not in a position to accept more people in.”

“I see. In that case, we definitely need to find a solution urgently.”

I took a piece of paper and a pen from my pocket and quickly wrote down the villager’s need for support. Of course, I had no intention of using the duke’s treasury. I planned on using my own funds and the money I would receive from Alisa later. Surely no one would dare to voice any complaint in this way. 

“Saintess-sama,I’m sorry but I would like to send a letter to my house. Can I ask for your help?”

“I don’t mind, but… No, it’s nothing.”

“If you have something to say, please say it now. It’s better to be clear about it.”

“I see. I will take you up on your offer then. You were already planning to help the village from the start, weren’t you? There’s no need for you to do it in such roundabout ways. We can assist you right away.”

“I’m sorry, but I don’t want to owe anyone anything.”

“Oh my, how cold.”

I had no intention to owe the Saintess a favor. She would end up by the hero’s side anyway. Besides, any kind of debt would only lead to complications in the future. Right now, I had no other choice but to work together with the Saintess because the villagers were in dire need of help. However, I had no intention of getting involved with the Saintess ever again once I finished settling this urgent problem.

“I knew it. My Ike-sama is very kind indeed.”

Luna said with a smile. 

We-Well, it seemed my standing in Luna’s eyes improved even further as a result of this, so it was all good I guess. Now, I just had to take down the root cause of this problem… The Black Dragon!

However, I couldn’t let my guard down just yet. I knew at least one member of our subjugation team definitely harbored negative feelings toward us. 

Suddenly, I could hear hurried footsteps approaching us. 

Bam!!

The door swung open. 

“VILLAGE CHIEF! THIS IS BAD! A LARGE GROUP OF BANDITS ARE COMING TO THE VILLAGE!”

A villager burst into the drawing room. 

“What did you say…?!”

“Ike-sama…”

Luna stared at me with a worried expression.

“Hmm… In that case, we better go out and welcome them here.”

I never expected a group of bandits would come while I was here with the church’s subjugation team. I needed to make sure those bandits regret coming in contact with me.
