Chapter 13: Encounter With the Hero

“Ike-dono, Luna-dono. I apologize for asking you to come all the way here.”

“Not at all. We humbly extend our congratulations to the kingdom’s sun, King Gilga, on your birthday.”

Luna and I were having an audience with the king in the royal hall. In the main story of Fortune Lover, the king was described as a kind ruler who cared deeply for his subject. However, the way he looked at me and Luna now was almost one of disdain. 

“No need for formalities. After all, I’m the one that asked you to come. I know I’m the one asking the unreasonable demand.”

I felt a twinge of irritation at King Gilga’s overtly disdainful gaze.

“You two have recently become engaged, correct?”

“Yes, we were engaged a few days ago.”

“I see. I pray for a future filled with happiness for both of you.”

So he said but it was clear to see he had no intention of blessing us at all. 

“Thank you very much. I will definitely make Luna happy. If we could receive King Gilga’s blessing, I’m sure our future will be even happier.”

“We’re here to celebrate my birthday, but I’ll be sure to prepare another celebration for you later.”

“Thank you for your kindness. We’re looking forward to it.”

Truthfully, I really didn’t have any intention to go to the palace again. I hoped he was jus speaking out of formality. 

“By the way, son of the Hanbulg family, are you aware of the legend of the hero?”

“…I’ve heard rumors, but what about it?”

Honestly speaking, I didn’t only know the rumors about it. I was very familiar about it. After all, the hero was the protagonist of Fortune Lover, the one who would push Ike Hanbulg to his execution in the future. There was no way I wouldn’t know about him when I had played the game countless times. He was the protagonist after all. 

“It seems the Demon Lord will be resurrected soon. Therefore, Ike, would you like to have a spar with the Hero for a bit? Well, think of this as a small entertainment for me. I can’t ask for a better gift than this.”

“A spar, Your Majesty…?”

I just realized that even though this was supposed to be His Majesty’s birthday celebration, but there was no party-like table set up in here. In other words, the King had invited us here with the intention of sparring with the Hero from the beginning. 

“That being said, the Hero has recently awakened as a hero. So, just think of it as a little roughhousing between boys.”

The King said so while looking at me with contempt. 

“Now then, allow me to introduce the hero to you. Julius.”

“Hey there!~ I’m Julius, the Hero~”

At His Majesty’s signal, a man with a flashy appearance entered the premises. He had brown hair and long hair, unusual for a man. In Fortune Lover, the protagonist was a man, but I had never seen him before since the protagonist never appeared in all CGs. 

Now that I could see what the protagonist looked like… I felt a little disappointed to know all the heroines I had targeted ended up with someone like him. I mean, just look at his appearance. 

“Ah! I know you! You’re Ike Hanbulg, the womanizer! Heh! Don’t worry! I will make an honest man out of a rotten man like you!”

“What a rude man he is…”

Luna muttered quietly under her breath. I could feel the anger seeping out of her. She was probably angry because the Hero was looking down on me, but somehow… I felt happy to know she was getting angry for my sake. 

“Nice to meet you, I’m Ike Hanbulg.”

However, even though the Hero was being rude to me first, I still wanted to show him the bare minimum respect. After all, this was our first meeting, regardless of the circumstances behind it. 

“So… Your Majesty, can I fight this guy? For real? I’m really going to mess him up, you know?”

However, the Hero kept on speaking, ignoring me completely. 

“Ah, right. Check this out. This is the mark of a hero, a holy stigmata. You won’t be able to see this kind of thing every day, so better burn this sight in your brain.”

The Hero raised his right hand to show the mark on his hand. Indeed. A glowing white stigmata was engraved on the Hero’s right hand.

“Oooh… So that’s the holy stigmata…”

“How divine…”

“One favored by the gods, the other one a scoundrel. Pfft. I’m going to enjoy this show thoroughly with drinks.”

“Our king can be pretty naughty sometimes, doesn’t he? Fufufu~”

“Indeed. How amusing.”

The participants of the ‘birthday celebration’ began gossiping among themselves, filling the royal hall with their chatter. They were mainly praising the Hero while insulting me at the same time. It seemed they were deliberately talking loud enough for me to hear.

By the way, the holy stigmata was a proof of a hero that belonged only to the protagonist of Fortune Lover. There was a legend that those who possessed this proof could defeat the Demon lord. Furthermore, a prophet had predicted the Demon Lord’s resurrection in the near future. Hence why the kingdom began to prepare for the arrival of the Demon Lord in earnest recently. 

In the end… Luna, who had fallen into darkness, ended up becoming the said Demon Lord in Fortune Lover.

“Hero, he’s still a citizen of this kingdom. Try to go easy on him.”

Both the Hero and the King were mocking me blatantly.
