Chapter 12: An Invitation From the King

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Father.”

“Ooh, Ike. I’ve been waiting!”

Luna and I arrived at Ganon’s office and he quickly motioned for us to take a seat.

“So? How are things going so far?”

“Well, everything is going smoothly.”

He must be talking about the artifact. It was fine. We still had plenty of time. As long as we successfully discovered another new artifact and presented the artifact to Father, everything should be alright. There shouldn’t be any problem.

“I see. I heard Marsha has been teaching you magic lately. I’m curious to know about your progress since as you know, our house is renowned for its magic. One day, I will personally teach you magic since you will be inheriting my position in the future.”

“Huh? Father will?”

“Yeah. Is there a problem?”

“No, not at all. Thank you for the honor, Father.”

Ah, so that was what he wanted to talk about. I thought he was asking about the artifact. I never imagined Ganon would have any expectations on Ike. To be honest, I didn’t know how strong Ganon was. His abilities were never mentioned in Fortune Lover, but seeing how strong Masha-nee was… I guess his teaching might be something to look forward to. 

“Pardon the intrusion. Here’s the tea.”

Melcott poured tea for the three of us indifferently. Melcot’s impartial attitude was, in a way, reassuring. She never looked down on Luna for her curse. No, to be precise, Melcott always looked disinterested in all of us.

“Ike, I’d like you to accompany me to His Majesty’s birthday party.”

Father announced, as if my participation was already set on stone.

“With all due respect, Father… Regarding the King’s birthday party, wouldn’t it be better if I don’t come along? It’s more advantageous for me if everyone keeps underestimating me and more importantly…”

“More importantly..?”

“I don’t want to get close with another woman in front of Luna, even if it’s just an act.”

“Ike-sama… I… If it’s for the sake of Ike-sama’s ambitions, I will endure anything for you!”

“I appreciate the sentiment,  but Luna… As long as I have you by my side, I don’t really care about anyone else.”

“Ah~ Ike-sama! I’m so happy! I truly am fortunate to have you as my husband.”

As long as I could achieve a happy married life with Luna, I didn’t really care about anything else. Luna’s eyes became soft and dreamy as she stared at me. Good grief, she was just too adorable. She was super adorable! So incredibly adorable! Her cute reactions made saying cheesy lines worth it sometimes.

“Ah… Luna, you really are adorable.”

“A-Ahem! Ike, I understand your point. However, please listen to me first. While it’s wonderful to see the two of you are so close, but I need you to take a look at this.”

Ganon then pulled out a red envelope sealed with golden wax.

“This is…”

I had seen this envelope in a CG scene from Fortune Lover.

“This is an invitation from the King… Addressed to us?”

“Indeed. I’m sorry Ike, but the King has personally requested you and Luna-dono’s presence. He sent this invitation to us with that purpose.”

Hanbulg was a duke household. It wouldn’t be weird for the King to summon someone from the Hanbulg family, but usually that someone was the head of the family. Hence why, the fact that the King had personally sent an invitation addressed to me and Luna…

“I have a bad feeling about this…”

In Fortune Lover, the King was portrayed as a kind and benevolent ruler to his subject. He was especially caring toward the Hero, his ally. But at the same time… The King was extremely cold and ruthless toward the Demon Lord, his enemy. Luna and I were not the hero, nor the demon lord. It wasn’t certain whether he would treat us as his allies or enemies until we met him. I couldn’t help but to feel anxious because of this uncertainty. 

“Well, in any case, this means you have to go to the party! Ignoring a letter from the King himself would be considered as a treason after all! I expect you will be able to handle this matter well for the sake of our family!”

“Understood.”

I think Father’s words were far more treasonous, but this wasn’t the time to be worrying about that. Just like what he said, I had no other choice now. However, one thing for sure. No matter what happened, I had to protect Luna. If things were to go awry, I wouldn’t hesitate to punch the King in the face and escape the country together with Luna if we must.

“Ike-sama, allow me to say this. I will accept any choice you make. That’s why, you don’t need to worry about me. I know you can be too kind sometimes, Ike-sama.”

“It’s not that I’m kind. I just don’t want to see you get hurt because of my own selfish desire. But… Thank you. I will accept your feelings properly, Luna.”

Luna was really a good girl and yet, the original characters in Fortune Lover dared to treat her so cruelly… No, I should stop thinking about that now. 

“Well then, Ike, Luna-dono, we will need to head to the royal palace promptly. And do not cause any trouble ‘yet’.”

“Understood.”

For some reason, Father had a smug look on his face even though he had never prepared anything himself. He seemed to be enjoying this. Even so, there was a chance that Luna might not be welcomed due to her cursed power. It wouldn’t be surprising if Luna were to get ostracized because of it. I would need to take some extra measures to prepare for the future.

“We will leave tomorrow morning. Don’t oversleep! Well, that is all. You two can leave now.”

And so, Luna and I started to prepare for our journey to the royal palace.
