Chapter 06: The Hero of [Resurrection] Takes the Leader’s Seat
A month had passed since I’d fallen into the abyss.
“Haaahhh!!!!”
“Grruuaaahhh!!”
Right now, I was fighting on equal terms with the same kind of wolf that had slaughtered me hundreds of times on that first day.
Maybe it was thanks to the bone club and leather armor I’d crafted from the monsters Silesta hunted… or maybe I really had just gotten stronger.
Either way, I was no longer being beaten down one-sidedly.
“Grruaaahhh!!”
“Gh…!”
Its sharp claws grazed my side, tearing the skin—
But in that same instant, I slammed my club straight into the wolf’s skull.
The blow landed perfectly. The beast staggered, swayed… and then collapsed, blood pouring from its head.
A clean concussion, most likely.
Just to be sure, I smashed its skull several more times until I was certain it was dead.
And then—suddenly, my body felt light.
That sensation—growth.
Sometimes, when a hero defeated a monster, their body would subtly strengthen. Each boost was small, but by repeating it dozens, hundreds of times, a hero could gradually grow far more powerful.
“Mister, your movements are way sharper than before.”
“Eh? R-Really?”
I was still panting hard from killing just a single wolf, but Silesta looked perfectly composed as she spoke.
Behind her lay the corpses of dozens of wolves she had already taken down herself.
“You’re still amazing as always, Silesta.”
“…I’m weak. I have to get stronger. Way stronger.”
“Eh, n-no, please don’t get depressed…”
Her face barely changed, but even I could tell Silesta’s mood had sunk.
The reason was obvious—
“GYAH-HAHAHAHAHAHA!! What’s wrong, you worthless little worms!! You think those pathetic swings can kill me, the Hero of [Slaughter]!? GYAH-HAHAHAHA!!”
Not far from us, a young man was locked in battle with a colossal worm monster, easily several dozen meters long.
And he wasn’t even using weapons—he was just pummeling it senseless with his bare fists.
He bore the golden eyes of a hero, but with his wild hair, crazed grin, and bloodthirsty aura, he looked more like a demon than a man.
Silesta glared at him and muttered:
“…I won’t lose to Rocoro again.”
His name was Rocoro.
The Hero of [Slaughter]. His ability let him grow stronger every time he killed an enemy. Among all the heroes I had resurrected, his combat ability was unmatched.
And honestly? He terrified me.
Sure, he looked like a wholesome young man. Normally, he was calm, rational, and even thoughtful—often grasping the situation before we explained and offering to help. He seemed kind.
But the instant a fight started, it was like a switch flipped—he dove into battle with glee, reveling in the carnage.
“Gyahahahahaha!! …Oh? Looks like I actually took the longest this time. My bad, my bad.”
“…I’ll never lose to you.”
“Hm? Were you and I competing, Lady Silesta?”
Rocoro tilted his head, genuinely puzzled, while Silesta glared daggers at him, clearly seeing him as her rival.
Before Silesta could throw down a challenge, I quickly cut in.
“S-Shouldn’t we head back to base soon?”
“Ah, yes. Good idea… fufu.”
“Hm? Something funny?”
“Oh, no, not at all.”
When Rocoro suddenly chuckled, I couldn’t help but tilt my head in confusion.
“It’s probably inappropriate… but this kind of thing is fun for me.”
“This kind of thing?”
“For some reason, the people I tried to protect always ended up hating me. So I spent most of my time alone, rather than with others.”
“T-That’s…”
“That’s why I’ve always admired the idea of everyone pouring their strength into what they do best, all working together toward a single goal. That’s why… right now, I’m really enjoying myself.”
Seeing Rocoro’s cheerful smile, there was no way I could tell him, “It’s not that people hate you—it’s that they’re terrified of you.”
While we were talking, we finally arrived back at our base.
Across from the temple that housed the “Wicked Dragon” stood a massive fortress.
Thick walls and a water-filled moat surrounded it, making it a truly impregnable stronghold.
This fortress had been created by the Hero of [Castle], whose power allowed him to conjure a fortress from nothing.
Its durability was insane—Silesta had once unleashed her strongest [Blade] against it, and it hadn’t even scratched the walls.
That said, the hero himself wasn’t much of a fighter. He’d built a hidden chamber underground and pretty much spent his days holed up there sleeping.
Apparently, if the Hero of [Castle] died, the fortress would vanish as well. So honestly, having him stay safe and tucked away was probably for the best.
Just then—
BOOOOM!! A thunderous boom echoed from inside the fortress, like something had exploded.
Alarmed, I rushed inside and spotted Imuru nearby.
“W-What happened!?”
“Oh, Elott!! Perfect timing!! The Hero of [Field] and the Hero of [Sleep] are fighting!!”
“Whaaa!?”
I bolted straight toward the scene.
“…Don’t… make me… say it again… This is… my nap spot…”
“You’re just claiming that for yourself!! This soil is top quality!! I’m plowing it for my field!! And if you get in the way, I’ll plow you too!!”
“…Bring it…”
“W-Wait!! Waaait!! Both of you, stop, stop!! No fighting!!”
I rushed in between the two heroes before their clash could explode, desperately trying to calm them down.
Heroes were people too.
Not everyone could get along perfectly. Quarrels happened all the time, and each time, I was the one stuck mediating.
“As expected of Sir Elott!! Our fearless leader!!”
“Ugh… this was more exhausting than fighting wolves…”
Somehow, I’d ended up in the role of leader, wrangling dozens of senior heroes.
Honestly, it felt wrong for me—the one resurrecting them and borrowing their strength—to also be the one giving orders.
But when everyone shrugged and said, “Sounds like a pain,” I was the one left holding the position.
And being leader was harder than I thought.
From settling disputes like this, to setting the day’s overall plans, to compiling reports on the temple investigation… it wasn’t unpleasant work, but hero-on-hero fights were no joke. They drained me.
“Mister, if you’re tired, wanna squeeze my boobs? Or maybe drink from them?”
“P-Please stop undressing, Silesta!!”
“Nuhaha!! Silesta, you’re as bold as ever!!”
I tried to stop Silesta from baring her chest, but she was still stronger than me. Bit by bit, more of her skin kept slipping into view.
Just then, Meimei showed up where we were talking.
“H-Hey, Elott!! If you’re back, at least say something! I-I wasn’t worried or anything, but… you should report these things properly—”
“““Ah.”””
“W-W-What are you doing, you idiot!!”
In the dim light of the abyss, it must’ve looked to Meimei like I was the one trying to strip Silesta.
“Y-You’ve got it all wrong!! I’m stopping her from undressing, that’s all!!”
“Meimei, I was just about to heal Mister with some flirty nursing play, so children should run along now.”
“H-Hey!!”
“F-Flirty nursing play!? A-Absolutely not!! You’re not even dating, that’s indecent!! And—wait—who are you calling a child!?”
“Mister and I are basically dating already. It’s pure love, so it’s totally fine.”
With that, Silesta shoved me down.
Damn it—if it comes to raw strength, I don’t stand a chance!! At this rate, my chastity’s in danger!!
It’s not like I hate Silesta—in fact, what guy wouldn’t be thrilled to have such a beautiful girl being this forward?
But being forced into it just felt wrong.
So I kept resisting with everything I had—
And that’s when Tiara walked in.
“Ah, finally found you, Elott!! W-Wha—what are you doing!?”
“Tiara!! Perfect timing!!”
I quickly explained the situation, and she helped peel Silesta off me.
“Geez!! Silesta, that’s no good!! Forcing yourself is wrong!!”
“Too bad. I was this close to stealing Mister’s chastity.”
“Lewd stuff is forbidden!!”
“Anyway, Lady Tiara—didn’t you have some business with Elott?”
“Ah, right!! Elott, the unit that went to investigate the temple’s interior just came back!!”
““““!?””””
The moment I heard Tiara’s report, I rushed straight to the fortress infirmary.
There, four heroes lay.
Three of them were already dead—their bodies mutilated, entrails spilling grotesquely from their torsos.
The only one still alive noticed me, managed a faint grin, and spoke:
“Yo, leader. We’re back. Screwed up a bit, though… Think you could start by resurrecting these three?”
The one who spoke was a man with narrow eyes and a constant smile—giving off an air that felt just a little shady.
He was Iltar, the Hero of [Immortality].
As long as his power wasn’t sealed, he could survive no matter what—even if reduced to just a head.
Second only to Rocoro, he was one of the strongest forces in the abyss, and among the very few who could actually set foot inside the temple.
The three heroes who had gone with him were also capable enough to do the same.
And yet… Iltar was the only one who returned alive.
“What happened in there?”
After resurrecting the fallen heroes, I pressed him for details.
Still smiling, he answered casually:
“Well, y’know, thought maybe we could pull it off, so we went ahead and challenged the ‘Wicked Dragon.’ Got wiped out, hah. Took everything I had just to pick up their scattered bits and drag ‘em back.”
“Y-You thought maybe you could… Please, don’t take reckless risks like that.”
“Hahaha, my bad, my bad!! Guess next time we’ll have to get a lot stronger before even thinking about it!! For now, I’ll stick to monster hunting!!”
But even with four of the strongest heroes, they hadn’t stood a chance.
Just how powerful was the “Wicked Dragon”?
I couldn’t afford to feel satisfied just because I’d gotten a little stronger. I had to keep pushing, keep slaying monsters, keep growing.
And so, another two months passed.
