- Chapter 42: “Can I pull it off?”
“Can I pull it off?”
That night.
The time was 1:00 AM.
“Fuu…”
I let out a long breath after ending the voice call with Shingo.
What I had asked Shingo for was information on Okazaki Nanase—any detail, no matter how small. I wanted him to gather as much as possible and report back. That was my request.
Our school’s personal CIA intelligence officer worked frighteningly fast. In just six hours, he had compiled everything into a single report and sent it via Lime. He even provided additional voice call service to explain the finer nuances. Some of the information apparently came through Ryuusenji.
I’ll have to thank Ryuusenji properly next time too.
I went over Shingo’s report once more.
・Nanase Okazaki
・Three sizes: unknown
・Daughter of the president of Okazaki Electric Industries, a mid-sized local electrical components manufacturer.
・Considered beautiful with a great figure. Along with the top three beautiful girls, she is said to be one of the “Four Heavenly Beauties,” but she herself dislikes the title. She has always been especially hostile toward Yukina.
・Central figure in the fan group of former soccer club captain, Yanagi Souta.
・Spoiled, queen-like personality, but beautiful and sociable with strong charisma.
・Akiko Mizushima and Maria Aso are Nanase’s underlings. The three of them always move together.
・Poor at academics. Plans to join her father’s company after graduation.
・Hobbies include following the band Passion Generator (commonly known as P-Gene) and going to clubs late at night.
・Her father, Genichi Okazaki, is a respected local figure—serious, upright, and well-regarded. However, he has strong expectations for his daughter to grow up properly and was apparently very strict with her from a young age.
・Perhaps as a result of that, after entering high school Nanase began secretly sneaking off to clubs behind her father’s back.
・At the clubs, she is often seen hanging out with a school alumnus named Takayuki Mizuno. This Mizuno guy apparently has quite the bad reputation and there are even rumors he deals in marijuana and synthetic drugs.
“Kousuke might not know this, but Passion Generator—‘P-Gene’—is a band that’s been rapidly gaining popularity lately. After their major debut, one of their songs was used as an anime theme, and now they’re a nationally famous band. Concert tickets sell out instantly, and they’re even aiming for the global market.”
I recalled Shingo’s explanation.
“Nanase has been a fan since P-Gene’s debut. She used to go to every concert in the area. But lately she’s been complaining that she can’t get tickets at all.”
I hadn’t even known the band existed.
“Also, her father’s company is currently expanding, so President Genichi Okazaki is constantly away on business trips, both domestic and overseas. He’s barely home these days. Taking advantage of that, Nanase has been spending entire nights—until dawn—hanging out at clubs. By the way, her mother is his second wife and seems completely unable to control Nanase.”
I see. So it’s a classic case of “when the cat’s away, the mice will play.”
“At the clubs, she’s often seen in the VIP room with that Takayuki Mizuno. There have also been sightings of Nanase looking extremely high, so their relationship is probably inappropriate in more ways than one.”
Shingo had really managed to dig up this much in such a short time. It was a good thing I had that favor saved up. I was genuinely grateful. Though even without the favor, he probably would have helped anyway.
Now I had the information.
What next?
The immediate goal was to obtain solid evidence that Nanase was the culprit—and as quickly as possible.
I lined up various options in my head. Should I approach from the outside? No, that would take too much time. I wanted to resolve this as fast as I could.
Direct contact it is, then.
What would I need?
After careful thought, I decided to prepare two “props.”
I started searching for the first one.
I took out my smartphone, opened the flea market app “Carmeli,” tapped the red box icon, and typed “P-Gene” into the search bar. I sorted the results by highest price first.
I opened the very first listing that appeared, checked some of the details, and confirmed it. This was perfect. It was ideal as a prop. I tapped the purchase button and completed the payment. Then I sent a message to the seller asking for express delivery. With any luck, it should arrive by Sunday night.
Now, the problem was the second prop. This one I would have to make myself.
I checked the clock. It was past 1:00 AM on Friday night. I would have to leave the house by 7:30 AM on Monday morning. Including sleep, I had roughly 54 hours left.
“Can I actually do this?”
I hesitated. This was uncharted territory for me—something I had never done before.
Then, the image of Yukina from that afternoon flashed through my mind. The sight of her desperately holding back tears in front of her shredded skirt.
“I won’t let her make a face like that ever again!”
I steeled myself.
“It’s not about whether I can. I’m going to do it.”
I opened the programming editor software on the PC in front of me.
