Chapter 1: A Present from Onee-chan ~With Love~
My older sister is on TV.
The face of Onee-chan, whom I hadn’t seen in a while, hadn’t changed at all since the last time we met.
“Long time no see~ Are you doing well?”
She’s waving with a beaming smile.
(She’s got no idea how I feel, what’s with her!)
One month had passed since I entered high school this spring.
I’m not the type to stand out, but I got along normally with my classmates, did above average in both studies and sports, and was enjoying high school life just fine.
On one such day, when I wasn’t involved in any club activities or part-time jobs and was lazily watching videos on my smartphone at home, a package arrived.
Since Mom was out at her part-time job, I received it.
“To Kageyama Mamoru-sama, a delivery.”
(Huh? It’s for me? Did I order something?)
It was a package addressed to me, “with no sender’s name written.”
(What? That’s creepy!!)
Normally, I’d find it creepy and absolutely wouldn’t open it, but for some reason, I felt like I had to look at this one.
When I opened it, inside was a box that looked exactly like a treasure chest and a single DVD.
I nervously played the DVD in my room.
“Long time no see~ Are you doing well?”
There, on the screen, was my missing older sister, smiling brightly.
“Congratulations on entering high school!! I really wanted to say it in person, but I~m kinda unable to contact you, so sorry for doing it like this!!”
Onee-chan on the TV made an apologetic gesture with her hands while smiling cheerfully.
Seeing Onee-chan after so long, she hadn’t changed at all.
She looks a bit baby-faced but also stunningly beautiful. Her long chestnut hair was glossy, and anyone would call her a beauty.
(And she’s a genuine genius, recognized by everyone…)
Onee-chan never scored anything less than perfect on tests, always ranked first nationally, and won various awards for reasons I don’t fully understand.
I was a bit taken aback when she solved a math problem no one had ever solved in just a few hours and won a ton of prize money…
With her exceptional looks, genius intellect, and naturally cheerful personality…
She was truly someone loved by everyone, and as her younger brother, I felt inferior.
(But she cherished me more than anyone else…)
Onee-chan always put me first, above anyone or anything else, so I loved her dearly…
But one day, she suddenly disappeared and never came back home.
When I asked Mom, she said, “Well, knowing her, she’s probably fine, right?”
Our parents are an ordinary salaryman father and a part-time working housewife mother, a completely normal household, but that’s how they treated Onee-chan.
Of course, they love her properly, so I think it’s a matter of trust.
To begin with, it’s a wonder that a genius like her came from a family like ours…
So, for the first time in years, I saw Onee-chan’s face.
“…What do you mean, long time no see… Come say it in person.”
I couldn’t help but tear up.
“That’s why I said sorry, don’t cry.”
Onee-chan on the TV said it with genuine remorse.
“Even if you say that…”
(Huh? Did we just have a conversation?)
“Fufu~n. I know exactly what my cute little brother is thinking!”
Pointing at me, stunned, Onee-chan laughed.
I felt like I was in the palm of her hand, which irritated me a bit, but the nostalgia of our exchange made me a little emotional.
“Now, onto the main topic. Mamoru! Congratulations on entering high school!!”
The TV screen displayed celebratory effects like confetti.
(Loud! Good thing Mom isn’t home…)
“Well, knowing Mamoru, you’re probably living an ordinary student life, right? Ordinary is the best! Ordinary is the greatest!! But still.”
(Being told that by a genius doesn’t exactly make me happy.)
Strangely, it didn’t sound sarcastic, and I wasn’t upset.
“But knowing the shy Mamo-kun, you probably don’t have any luck with girls, do you?”
“Mind your own business.”
I muttered, a bit irritated.
“Now, now, don’t get mad. To my dear Mamo-kun, a high school enrollment gift from your Onee-chan! Open the box that was sent with it!”
Ignoring the fact that she responded again, I opened the treasure chest that came with it.
“What’s this? Eye drops?”
Inside were several bottles of eye drops with blue liquid, the kind you’d find at a regular drugstore.
“Yes! Correct!! Those are super eye drops that turn the eyes you use them on into ‘Evil Eyes’!!”
For the first time in a while, I couldn’t understand what Onee-chan was saying…
