Chapter 6: A Moment of Negligence

“What do we do? Hey, what do we do!?”

Following the voice, I heard someone talking about something.

“What do we do? We’ve already sent an emergency report, so there’s nothing else but to leave it to them.”

“But they never arrive on time, right?!”

“Yeah, but there’s no way we can take down a Spriggan Giant!”

“That’s true, but—”

The voices were getting closer, meaning I was on the right path. From what I heard, it seemed like someone had been left behind. If they’d managed to escape, there would’ve been no need for me to go. It couldn’t be helped then.

I slipped past the two women approaching and headed further in. The moment I stepped into a wider area, the blue glow of a magic stone vein spread out before me. Near it stood the Spriggan Giant, and right in front of the monster was a woman clutching a golden pickaxe.

True to its name, a Spriggan was a fairy-type monster that lurked near treasure and magic stone veins. When engaged in battle, it grew to a massive size, that was the Spriggan Giant. According to Wikipe, it was the strongest monster discovered so far in the Kichijoji Dungeon.

I had no idea where it ranked in difficulty among all awakened Earthlings, but considering that there were dungeons that had been cleared in this world, that monster was probably at most mid-tier. Even so, there were those who would fall in despair upon meeting it. Sure, Spriggan Giant might be considered a small fry to the world’s top elites, but for the majority of Awakened individuals, it was either a formidable enemy or a threat that demanded a willingness to die once encountered.

For the woman standing before it, it was unquestionably the latter. Even from behind, I could see her trembling violently. She wasn’t standing her ground. She was frozen in fear, unable to move. There was no way she went this far only to get killed.  But hold on. There was something I wanted to test first. 

Might as well try it while I’m at it.

With that thought, I picked up a fragment of magic stone from the ground. Had she been mining magic stones? Magic stones that had separated from the dungeon could be touched by me. Confirming that this rule still held true, I flicked the fragment with my finger. Four consecutive shots. The Spriggan Giant’s limbs shattered.

“Huh?”

The woman stared in shock as the Spriggan Giant, now limbless, tumbled to the ground before her.

“Ah, you. Can I talk with you for a bit?”

“Eh? Eh?”

She gripped her pickaxe tightly. She was wearing overalls, but the straps hanging off her shoulders were practically useless, leaving only a thin shirt covering her upper body and that thin shirt was stretched to the limit, rising like the Himalayas.

I couldn’t help but mutter, “Bi-“

Wait, wait.

“Ah, no. Give me a second.”

I flipped the Spriggan Giant onto its back with my foot, then stomped on its head to keep it from struggling.

“Hey, drop that pickaxe here.”

“Huh? O-okay!”

I pointed at the spot where the neck met the back of the head—the nape.

“This is the weak point. Well, I mean, most living things will die if you destroy this area.”

I let out a chuckle at my own remark and motioned for her to come closer, but she was still too shocked to move.

What a predicament…

: Uh… what is this situation?

: A wild Spriggan Giant has appeared!

: Too bad, the Spriggan Giant’s limbs exploded!

: A mysterious old man in a suit has appeared!

: The old man in a suit is urging Mimimi to deliver the finishing blow!

: I have no idea what’s going on.

: The Spriggan Giant is flopping around like a fish out of water!

: But it’s ineffective against the old man in a suit!

: The hell is going on here? LOL

: Unless you’re an S-Rank Awakened, this should be impossible, right?

: Is he an S-Rank Awakened?

: Huh?

: No.

: Japan currently only has four S-Rank Awakened. That old man isn’t one of them.

: Thought so.

She finally came closer.

“Um… Why me?”

She asked hesitantly, still looking pale. But I understood why she asked me that question.

“There’s something I want to confirm. Think of it like an experiment. Like dropping Mentos into cola to see if it really fizzes up.”

“H-Huh?”

“You’ve never done it before? Mentos and cola?”

“No, I haven’t.”

“Wow, is that experiment outdated already?”

I was a bit shocked by that, but she seemed amused by my reaction and let her expression soften.

“Are you really sure about this?”

“Of course. Right here. Don’t worry, just swing it down like you’re striking a mining vein.”

“With a clear mind…”

She murmured, then her expression went blank. Great focus. Her pickaxe swing was solid too. The tip struck precisely at the Spriggan Giant’s cranial base, and as proof of its defeat, it transformed into a magic stone. I could feel part of it flowing into me as well, but more importantly, I could confirm the monster would properly drop a magic stone.

It was a deep-colored one, about the size of a bowling ball—fitting for a Spriggan Giant. I picked it up and confirmed that I could touch it. I could probably claim it as my own. Ideally, I would have liked to test putting it into my Item Box, but I couldn’t do that in front of a stranger. I figured I could test that with the magic stone fragments I picked up earlier, so I handed her the magic stone from Spriggan Giant.

“You defeated it, so it’s yours.”

“Huh? But—”

“Alright, time to head back. Looks like you’ve gotten enough materials too. See you.”

“Huh? Wait!”

Ignoring her voice calling for me to stop, I quickly left the scene. I couldn’t leave together with her. If I did, she’d find out I wasn’t an Awakened. Besides, I had just come up with an efficient way to farm magic stones in the dungeon. I could use the resources in my Item Box as my initial investment. The real challenge was setting up a system to generate money.

“Hehehehe… I did it.”

Skipping down the path for the first time in ages, I eventually turned invisible and made my escape.
