ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
I am Dorajirou. I am a dungeon monster with memories of my past life.
It seemed that one day, I suddenly died. I didn’t remember the moment I died, but it couldn’t have been an accident. My last memory was of being in my own room, so I was certain I wasn’t in an accident. The next thing I knew, I had turned into a dungeon monster.
A goblin, a green-skinned race.
What the hell.
As I lamented that this was the result of a life spent mindlessly devoted to work, a goddess appeared before me. She wore a thin garment—so thin that I could see the skin beneath. It was also clear that she wasn’t wearing any underwear, and, well… It was safe to say I didn’t know where to look. Leaving aside the fact that she was a woman, the reason I could be certain that she was a goddess was simply because I could feel an overwhelming power from her. The sheer amount of power emanating from her made me certain she was a goddess.
The goddess spoke.
“It seems repurposing souls have a better monster evolution rate. With that said, do your best, okay?~”
That was all. I was left speechless at how utterly careless that explanation was, and before I knew it, I had been placed in a dungeon. After that, as a monster stationed in the dungeon, I was forced to learn through death. The black company-style training philosophy of “learn with your body” took on an entirely different level when applied to the realm of gods.
I truly died countless times. I stood in the way of dungeon challengers, only to be slaughtered over and over again. Over time, I learned how to fight and even managed to win some battles. And as I accumulated victories, power built up within me, allowing me to evolve.
From Goblin → Goblin Leader → Goblin General → Goblin King… and eventually, I surpassed the racial barrier and, at long last, I became a dragon.
“Evolution-based monsters really do cost way more to maintain, huh?”
The goddess appeared before me once again, looking quite pleased.
“A new dungeon is being built, so this time, I’ll have you serve as the final boss there.”
She said that right after I had evolved into a Gold Dragon, an even higher-tier dragon species.
By that time, I had come to understand the concept of dungeons quite well. I still didn’t grasp the fundamental reason why dungeons existed, but I did understand how to evolve. As the final boss of a dungeon, I had a certain degree of administrative authority. I could determine the number of floors, decide where to place which monsters, and arrange the pre-set traps. The goddess had control over what pieces were provided, but she left the internal management of the dungeon to the final boss.
So, for the sake of my evolution—and to create an impregnable dungeon where I would never suffer defeat—I did everything I could. Over the years, I experienced dungeon collapses many times. It was a pretty hard experience to go through. The sensation of being caught in a dungeon collapse was even worse than being cut down by challengers’ swords or burned alive by their magic.
I never wanted to go through that again. And so, I succeeded. I protected that dungeon for a hundred years. And yet—
“You’re fired.”
The goddess reappeared after a long time and suddenly dropped that speech on me.
“Why?”
“Because for the past hundred years, you’ve done nothing but hole up in this room.”
As I stood there bewildered, the goddess coldly continued.
“Meanwhile, you keep evolving and driving up costs. You alone account for half of this dungeon’s maintenance expenses. And despite that, you’re not even fighting. Doesn’t that seem like a waste of resources?”
I couldn’t say anything. With just those words, I immediately understood that she had no idea what was actually happening on the ground. There was no point in arguing. No matter how logical my counterpoints might be, someone like her would never listen to me.
She would never admit she was wrong. She was simply speaking because she was annoyed, with no intention of seeing the truth. The truth didn’t matter to her. Memories of my past life as a corporate worker—ones I never wanted to recall—began flooding my mind, nearly bringing me to tears. But I held them back.
“I’ll be putting a Black Minotaur in your place as the final boss. Unlike you, he has a perfect win rate in this dungeon.”
I summoned the Black Minotaur that had been guarding the floor before mine.
He must have been informed in advance since he was grinning at me.
Ah, so even this guy, who had actually fought, didn’t understand the essence of my job. Well, that couldn’t be helped. Since there was no formal training for newcomers, everyone had to fight in their own way. For the Black Minotaur, who had probably relied solely on brute force, what I was doing must have been incomprehensible. If words were useless, then there was no point in wasting time. After all, I still hadn’t found a way to overcome my position as a dungeon monster serving under this goddess.
“I understand. Then, what should I do next?”
“I was just thinking of expanding into another world, so I’ll assign you there. You won’t be the final boss, though.”
“Understood.”
It was better than being sentenced to complete eradication. I didn’t even know if such a thing was possible, but since I was dealing with a literal god, I had to be cautious. I left the dungeon I had maintained for so long and was assigned to a new one. However, my time in that dungeon lasted only an instant.
《Contract Termination》
《This dungeon has not yet been unlocked. The presence of an entity outside the Dungeon Master’s control is not permitted.》
《Expelling to the outside world.》
Suddenly, those words echoed in my head, and my vision darkened further… By the time I realized it, I was lying beneath the starry sky. I was understandably confused. I had spent a long time in dungeons. There had been all sorts—maze-type, fortress-type, surface-type, aerial-type, and more. But this place had a distinctly different atmosphere than dungeons.
The presence of magic power was very thin. The air was polluted. Below me were clusters of buildings, neon lights, and rows of cars speeding along roads, along with the screams of people looking up at me.
This was not a dungeon. And then, on a massive screen mounted on a building… There was an image. A voice. A written language.
Is this… Japan?
