“Hmm~! Nice hit, Gokuu~!”
Raigou swung her baggy sleeves around and praised the white-glowing monkey. The monkey jumped up and down with joy, chittering gleefully.
“R-Raigou-sensei… So its name is Gokuu? Earlier you called it ‘Clear Sky Great Star’… Wait, is that thing even alive?”
Anri, half-hiding behind Ittou, still couldn’t hide her curiosity. But as soon as her words seemed to hit a nerve, the white monkey’s expression twisted into anger, and it began to stomp its feet like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum. Seeing this, Anri quickly retreated further behind Ittou, while Raigou reached out and began to pat the monkey’s head.
“Well now, I’d say I’m on the ‘alive’ side of things, yeah. And this little one’s name is Gokuu. You know, Son Gokuu the monkey. ‘Clear Sky Great Star’ is the name of a special spell that little one uses, you see.”
“Eh? Th-Then, Raigou-sensei, your Original is this Gokuu-san? Or is it the Clear Sky Great Star?”
At some point, Kanna had slipped to Ittou’s left side and, just like Anri, was now half-hiding behind him. However, unlike Anri, Kanna kept stealing glances at Ittou, her face bright red, clearly using the chaos as an excuse to get a little closer. Noticing this too late, Kusumi smacked her own forehead in frustration. Ittou, unaware of the girls’ antics, simply waited for Raigou’s answer.
What exactly was an Original?
Ittou’s guess was that Gokuu was the Original—in other words, the same as Kondou’s “Mist Frog.” He figured that Gokuu was to the “Clear Sky Great Star” spell what the frog’s tongue was to Mist Frog—a medium of manifestation. But Raigou shook her head.
“Strictly speaking, my Original is something else. Well, you could say Gokuu and Clear Sky Great Star are both Originals in a way. But hey, seeing is believing, right? Come on out, Hakkai, Gojou!”
Raigou twirled her oversized sleeves, and from behind her—flanking Gokuu—two more figures appeared. Ittou and the others widened their eyes. One looked like a dark-skinned humanoid pig, the other a blue-tinted kappa-like creature. Both glared sharply at Ittou. The moment Ittou saw them alongside Son Gokuu, he made the connection. It was one of the stories his grandmother had told him.
“Saiyuki, as in ‘to play with demons.’ That’s my Original. I’ve always loved that story, you see. Iloved it so much, I wanted to bring it to life through magic. This spell lets me summon slightly reimagined versions of the characters to fight alongside me.”
Ittou turned his gaze from Raigou to the trio behind her. On Gokuu’s headband sat a single horn. Hakkai had two, and Gojou three. Each exuded an intimidating aura of power.
“You can summon three of them at once!? That’s amazing!”
Kusumi exclaimed. Raigou hid her smile behind her baggy sleeve, her twin-tails swaying with satisfaction. Behind her, the three spirits seemed even more delighted than she was, which made Ittou smile despite himself.
“Well, it’s not like quantity always equals quality, yeah. Still, it feels good to show off. Now then… Why don’t you praise them too? Let’s do a little demonstration!”
At Raigou’s signal, the three from Saiyuki let out ferocious roars. They were howls of warning, meaning they sensed a tremendous power approaching. A deafening boom shook the air to Ittou’s left, and from the dust emerged a creature resembling a werewolf—a silver-haired beastman like those found in dungeons.
Just as Gokuu leapt to attack, the werewolf darted forward on all fours, gliding across the ground in a blur of silver light, slipping under Gokuu’s strike. It looked as if Gokuu had been caught off guard, but in the next instant, clouds formed beneath his feet, flipping him midair in a perfect 180-degree rotation. The same light that had dropped Kusumi’s iron ball earlier flared again, this time aimed straight at the werewolf.
But the werewolf was faster. It jumped forward, closed the distance, and slashed. To Ittou, it looked like two quick swipes, but in reality, Gokuu had been torn to shreds. The flurry of invisible strikes left Gokuu’s body in ribbons before he even hit the ground. Hakkai snorted loudly, and Ittou and the others turned toward the sound. Hakkai had lunged toward a target, one of the third-year teachers Ittou recognized. A teacher with long blond hair tied in a ponytail like Kanna’s, wearing glasses. She nocked an arrow onto a slender, elegant bow, waiting calmly for Hakkai’s charge.
No way… A tiny bow like that can’t stop that massive charge!
Ittou gathered magic in his legs, ready to jump in, but when the teacher’s eyes met his, she gave him a look that said “It’s fine.” Then she refocused on Hakkai and released the arrow with less than a second to spare. Ittou thought—if it hit a vital point, maybe—but Hakkai spat out a huge chunk of ice, letting the arrow embed itself there. Then, with the ice still clamped in his jaws, he tried to push forward. But instead of advancing, Hakkai began to be forced backward, inch by inch.
Anri, baffled by the sight of the massive beast being overpowered, shook Ittou’s shoulder. But Ittou had no idea either. He squinted, trying to see the arrow—just as countless more began to fly like erratic bottle rockets, zigzagging wildly before converging from all directions onto Hakkai’s chest—right where his heart should be.
Letting out a death cry, Hakkai dissolved into nothingness. Then, rain began to fall—not only on him, but across the entire training room, even though it had a roof. A rain of deep blue-black droplets. Kanna started to call out, but stopped midway. The area where Team A stood remained dry, perfectly square and untouched by rain. Glancing sideways, they saw Heike standing beside Kusumi, creating a shadowy barrier overhead using her magic.
“This would be Gojou’s 【Kenren Taishou】.It’s *a spell that calls down acid rain strong enough to melt iron.”
Raigou’s voice came from behind Kanna. Kanna clenched her teeth in frustration—she, a frontliner, had let someone get behind her. Ittou also heard Raigou’s voice, realizing from her tone that Gojou was casting the spell of his own accord, not under her command.
What the hell?! The magic’s moving on its own?! No—the spell itself is using magic?!
The rain poured down like a natural disaster, but the werewolf stood unfazed, his silver fur gleaming. Over the blonde teacher’s head, her arrows hovered together, forming a makeshift roof. Then, through the rain, a lone woman in a kimono walked forward.
“Oh my~ What a wonderfully wild and beautiful rain. But as the saying goes, ‘eyedrops from the second floor’—whatever falls from above won’t reach me~”
She held up a talisman in her hand, several more floating around her. Though the rain fell fiercely, not a single drop touched her. Each droplet bent away, as if avoiding her entirely.
“How lively of you all. But I must say, I envy your optimism, thinking you can still win~”
Through the haze of rain, Ittou could now see her clearly. It was a teacher he knew well—the gentle, soft-spoken literature instructor, Tsukiyama. Without even glancing at the rain, Tsukiyama clapped her hands, sending one of her floating talismans flying toward Gojou, who continued to glare at her.
“‘Ghostly sea breeze.’ I suppose a reckless brute like you wouldn’t know that phrase~”
The talisman struck Gojou’s dark blue body, and a massive whirlwind rose up, swallowing both him and the rain. As the tornado shrank and compressed, it finally vanished with a gentle breeze that brushed Tsukiyama’s black hair aside.
“Well then! The teachers have arrived. They’re going to guide you through the true potential of an Original. Be sure to pay close attention~”
Raigou said cheerfully. Kanna and the others stood frozen, overwhelmed by the unbelievable chain of events. Behind Raigou, the Saiyuki trio reappeared, their faces full of frustration. Heike vanished from Kusumi’s side and reappeared beside Raigou. The silver werewolf shimmered, revealing a tall, beautiful woman. The arrows over the blonde teacher’s head slipped neatly back into their quiver. And Tsukiyama tilted her head slightly, pressing a hand to her cheek with a warm smile.
“My, my~ Not even answering back? How haughty of you~”
““““Y-Yes, ma’am!!””””
And thus began what the talented Guardian Girls would later describe as a 『lesson straight from hell』.
