ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Before the midterm tests, there was dungeon training. In front of the entrance to the Blue Serpent Marsh, Ittou was meeting his new team for the first time. He had heard from Kanna that the H Team he was joining was made up of some very peculiar individuals.
“Ummm, well then~ Why don’t we start~ With introductions~~~”
The voice was so calm and laid-back that Ittou almost tripped forward, but he straightened his back and answered with a smile.
“Y-yeah, good idea! Okay, I’ll go first. I’m Ittou Itsukushima. I used to fight in the front line with a dagger and shield, but recently I’ve started using a longsword.”
The reactions to his self-introduction were all over the place. Some averted their eyes, some welcomed him with open arms and a smile, some gave a creepy grin, and some didn’t seem to be listening at all. Ittou forced a smile at the odd atmosphere.
The three girls from Guardian Girls gave off a crisp, efficient vibe, but… These girls are more like, laid-back? Weird? Either way, it’s really different…
He suddenly felt a heavy weight in his right hand. Looking down, he saw a long-haired girl with black hair streaked with white mesh, panting heavily as she stroked his black longsword.
“Heehee… This longsword… It’s radiating such a wonderful magic power…! So nice, so nice… Ahh, I’m Rokuro Royama. N-nice to meet you, Ittou-kuuun… Fufhi!”
As Ittou hesitated, unsure how to respond to Rokuro’s upward, sticky gaze, someone smacked Rokuro on the back. The tanned hand then ran through purplish hair as its owner grinned broadly at Ittou.
“Rokuro! You’re scary! I’m Daria Danbara! Nice to meet you, Itto!”
When Ittou waved back at the energetic Daria, two more girls peeked out from behind her. One was a bob-cut girl with black hair, and behind her was a short-haired girl with light brown hair looking at him.
“U-uh, um, I’m Katari Katagiri… so…”
“Um, I’m Ui Unohana… yes, and… um, Nono-chan. Nono-cha…Y-you still haven’t introduced yourself…”
Still hiding behind Katari, Ui called out to the girl standing absentmindedly further back. She had the same hair color in a soft semi-long style that swayed gently as she moved.
“Ahhh~ I’m Nono Noshiro~ Uum~ nice to meet you~”
Deciding that Nono’s slow drawl wasn’t going to get them anywhere, Ittou nodded firmly to her and then turned back to face the group. Katari and Ui flinched, making Ittou instinctively step back, straighten his spine, and soften his voice as much as possible.
“Uh, so, what should we do? For now, can I check what everyone can do?”
“Ummm~ Wait a sec~~~ suuu~~~haa~~~ suuu~~~haa~~~ And then~~~”
“U-um…”
Unlike Ittou’s routine of three quick deep breaths, Nono’s slow, drawn-out breathing left him unsure how to respond. Rokuro rubbed her cheek against the longsword and spoke.
“Heh, N-Noshiro, the more nervous she gets, the slower her voice gets…! R-really fascinating, don’t you think? A-anyway, I use a spear. Alongside Noshiro who wields an axe, we fight at the front and p-protect everyone.”
“Daria’s a hunter! I do trap removal and stuff! Nice to meet ya!”
“I’m a mage, so I mainly use debuff-type black magic. I’m terrible at close combat, totally useless there, sorry. Please take care of me.”
“I’m good at healing magic, but I can hardly attack, so sorry for being a burden, please take care of me.”
“As for me~Ah, Rokuro-chan just mentioned it, didn’t she~?”
As soon as Rokuro started talking, the others all piled in to explain their roles. With no room to butt in, Ittou scratched his cheek, unsure what to say or where to start.
“U-uh…”
“Let’s just go! You’ll figure out about everyone’s ability in real practice!”
Daria pushed Ittou forward toward the dungeon. The warmth of her hand made his heart race, and unable to resist her forceful shove, Ittou gave in and headed inside.
“F-fine, but let’s go carefully! Okay!?”
“YEAH! Ahahaha!”
And so the dungeon training began, but Ittou was soon holding his head in despair at the situation.
“R-Royama-san! Don’t run off on your own! Noshiro-san, monster! Monsters are coming from the right! Danbara-san! Don’t go off alone! Ui-san, Katagiri-san too! If you stay that far back the magic loses effectiveness, move up more!”
Ittou had already seen H Team’s level in past training sessions. But now that he was actually in the team, he realized just how bad it was.
Rokuro charged ahead alone with a wicked grin, swinging her spear. Nono did act as the vanguard and drew enemy attention, but just like her speech, her decisions were so slow she couldn’t handle attacks from the sides.
Daria, supposed to be the team’s hunter and lookout, would immediately charge toward traps or monsters once she spotted them. Ui and Katari were so frightened they cast support from far in the rear, making their spells ineffective.
Ittou realized for the first time, just how blessed he had been with his teammates until now.
Kanna, Kusumi, and Anri each had their quirks, but when it came to dungeon teamwork, they could judge on their own and cover each other smoothly. H Team, on the other hand, was vague in judgment and bad at follow-up. They struggled even against low-level monsters.
Ittou could honestly fight more efficiently alone. Even compared to the Guardian Girls, the H Team’s fighting was so terrible that Ittou had to dash back and forth, desperately finishing off the monsters.
“Haa… haa… haa…!”
Wh-what should I do…? I’ve never had this happen before…!–
Though uninjured, the sheer exhaustion left him bracing his hands on his knees, panting. He wiped the sweat streaming down his cheeks, but no good solution came to mind.
“U-um… I-Itsukushima-kun.”
When he lifted his head, Katari was standing there, trying to hide behind her grimoire. Of course, a book that size only covered her face up to her neck, and holding it near her face only emphasized the large chest compared to her height, making Ittou quickly avert his gaze.
“Ah, uh… Katagiri-san? What is it…?”
“Um… I’m sorry. H Team really is a hopeless team… We’re nothing like Kanbara-san’s group, right…?”
“No! I mean… Having differences is normal, right? I mean, the positions and roles aren’t the same anyway.”
Ittou forced a smile and answered, but Katari raised the book to cover her whole face. This only squished her chest with her elbows, emphasizing it further. Ittou stumbled back, turning his head 120 degrees to the side.
“W-wait, what…?”
When he tilted his head, he saw Daria. But her brightness from before entering the dungeon was gone. She was hugging her knees with her head down, while Nono rubbed her back.
“S-sorry, Nono… I messed up again…”
“Come on~ Daria-chan, don’t get so down~”
Ittou was surprised at the change from her previous headlong recklessness. Katari, still hiding her face behind the book, spoke.
“D-Daria-chan has a unique magic, 【Enhanced Senses】, but when she uses it, she kind of goes hyper… Normally, she’s really quiet like this…”
“Ahh…”
Ittou nodded in understanding. He remembered Daria as a very quiet girl, so her behavior today had really thrown him off.
“And normally she doesn’t use it, but, sh-she didn’t want to be a burden on you, Itsukushima-kun, so she tried her best… But, i-it didn’t go well… Rokuro-chan is usually serious too, but today she’s kind of…”
“St-stop, stop it, Katagiri-san! I’m always l-like this, aren’t I…? Eheeeheehee!”
Hearing Katari, Rokuro let out a shriek-like laugh while swinging her spear. Watching her act so unnaturally, Ittou could tell Katari was telling the truth, so he responded with a gentle look, letting Rokuro know he understood.
Beside her, Ui was nervously casting recovery magic on her, but when she made eye contact with Ittou she panicked, tried to run, and tripped over something.
“U-uh…”
“Um, I knew it, we’re just troubling you. S-sorry… Unlike Kanbara-san’s group, we’re useless, dumb, and ugly…”
“No! You’re all cute! And you’re not useless or dumb, I think!”
““““Y-y-yes………!””””
“Suuuu~~~ha~~~ suuuu~~~ha~~~ suuuu~~~ha~~~”
The five girls all turned beet red at Ittou’s outburst. Nono too, her face flushed, continued her deep breathing slowly but earnestly. But Ittou, oblivious to their state, only scratched his head in worry.
So…What should I do from here…?
