As always, Raika waved her oversized sleeves around while chasing after her, and Heike turned back with an exasperated look. She smoothly dodged the finger Raika had poked toward her cheek, caught it, and gently pushed it down. Then, letting out a small sigh, she started walking again.

Raika puffed her cheeks and ran after her.

“You’re no fun~”

“Good. I’d rather be boring. More importantly… Have you found out anything about Chuma?”

During the Thousand Mage incident, Chuma’s finger had been severed by Ittou’s 【Metal Manipulation】, but thanks to a potion it was somehow regenerated. After that, Chuma was arrested—for attempting to kill another man despite his own special standing as a male, and for dragging countless women into it.

Speculation had run rampant about Chuma’s monsterization, but no official results were ever released, and the truth remained a mystery to this day. Since Raika had been assigned to assist in the investigation of Chuma, Heike questioned her, hoping she might know something.

“Heki—Heike-chan went to see him too, didn’t you?”

“I only saw him once. Director Rindou instructed me to observe the flow of magic. I told you afterward—there were no abnormalities. At least, not at that time.”

Heike scratched around her eyepatch with her thumb. Raika nodded eagerly and raised a finger.

“So that means it was different inside the dungeon, right?”

“Yeah. In the 【Slime Nest】, when I used the White Magic Eye, I saw magic power radiating from around the core of his body and spreading out to his finger in a rippling wave—amplified by an abnormal amount of magic power.”

Heike had slipped into Ittou’s shadow to infiltrate the 【Slime Nest】. Before Ittou and Chuma confronted each other, she had left the shadow and observed the situation. 

When Chuma was monsterized, Heike confirmed the abnormal magic flow with his White Magic Eye. Raika nodded, listening once more to the explanation she had already heard several times, and raised another finger.

“Right. The finger, ne… That ring Chuma-kun was wearing. The magic characters engraved on it must have reacted with… Well, calling it a chemical reaction isn’t quite right, but through some kind of synergy, the excessive magic led to his monsterization. That’s what the research team suspects.”

“And this ‘some kind of force’ is still unknown?”

Heike had observed the magic power of countless people before. Yet never once had he seen a flow like Chuma’s. But the closest comparison would be…

Heike’s face twisted as she scratched roughly around her eyepatch. Chuma’s magic power flow resembled that of a monster. She had already reported that to Director Rindou, as well as the fact that after Chuma’s finger was severed, his magic flow returned to that of a human.

“That magic power back then was far too sinister. It had to be something dangerous.”

“Something that seems sinister to humans might appear divine to others, don’t you think?”

Raika pointed the raised finger at Heike with a grin.

“Humans are like that too. For example, when I drink my beverage, Fumika-chan always makes a face, ne?”

At Raika’s remark, Heike grimaced as well.

“Your drinks look far too bizarre.”

Raika’s face lit up, clearly pleased with that answer, and she pointed her finger at her again. From the tip of her finger, a pale blue magic drifted out.

“Exactly! But to me, it looks delicious. Some humans can’t stand the sight of bugs, while others love them. So you see, ne—”

The pale blue magic power shaped itself into a butterfly, fluttered gently through the air, and after about ten seconds, its body dissolved. Blue, snow-like magic particles fell softly all around.

Raika watched the battle with a sharp gaze, already sensing the signs of the next conflict to come.
