Chapter 48: Meanwhile, the Teachers
Test Dungeon, 2nd Floor, Teacher Party, Baseball Coach, Sayama Taku
“Here they come! I’ll take the first one!”
As Oida-sensei shouts, two Horn Rabbits leap out from small holes on both sides, charging at him.
Oida-sensei calmly reads their movements, steps back twice, and blocks both rabbits, one after the other, with the greatshield in his hands.
Seizing the moment, the track coach—Ueyano-san, the lolicon—and Miyata-sensei, the math teacher, each thrust their spears into the now-still Horn Rabbits. I catch Miyata-sensei’s dandruff fluttering in the air.
But the Horn Rabbits’ attack isn’t over yet.
“Sayama-kun, more coming from behind!”
“Got it!”
Two more Horn Rabbits charge from the rear, but this isn’t our first time.
Knowing they’re coming makes it easy to deal with.
Responding to Hasebe-san—the soccer coach, the flashy guy—I join him, and we take them down with his spear and my sword from the sides.
Since reaching F-rank, I can cut them in half with one swing, making fights much easier.
“Oh my, no turn for me again? I went through the trouble of learning magic, but Horn Rabbits don’t give me a chance to use it, do they?”
As we start collecting the magic stones from the defeated Horn Rabbits, Kume-sensei, the English teacher, shrugs with a thin smile.
His face is as shady as ever. And he’s the only one who looks pristine.
I’m so jealous that he’s the only one who got a shower room as a magic stone cash-in reward.
I won’t say he cheated. It was a special reward for the first ten to cash in, so that’s just how it goes. If I wanted to complain, I should’ve cashed in faster than Kume-sensei.
But I’ve got issues with him being the only one allowed to buy magic.
It’s not that I want to use magic myself. Past 30, casting spells feels a bit embarrassing. My daughter would love it, though.
The problem is that he bought it with magic stones collected from the students. Technically, it’s the stones our party saved plus the ones from the students, but it’s still embezzlement.
And we only heard about it this morning. Classic after-the-fact report.
I protested to Oida-sensei. Using stones collected from students under the pretense of feeding the shut-ins for our party’s strength is wrong, I said.
But he said we’re not just saving the shut-ins—we need to save the female students too. To do that, we have to get stronger and push forward.
I wanted to call it a flimsy excuse, but I held my tongue after seeing the faces of the other teachers and coaches.
They all looked convinced.
That’s when it hit me. Probably everyone but me knew about buying the magic book with the students’ stones.
They must’ve thought I’d object if they told me beforehand. So they made it an after-the-fact report for me alone.
But don’t they realize what’ll happen if the students find out?
They probably think they can silence them with teacher authority.
This isn’t the academy anymore… Right now, the students follow our orders because they still see themselves as students.
In this extreme environment, how long will they keep listening to us?
I can’t shake my unease.
Ever since we learned that guard, Sanada-san, protected a female student, everyone’s been on edge.
Sanada-san’s strong. You can tell just by looking. That obvious blade scar on his face, his chiseled physique, and the guts to not flinch against the delinquent groups parents brought in. But the scariest thing is his eyes. Those dark, sharp eyes that seem like they wouldn’t care about killing someone—I can’t even look at them straight.
He’s not normal. He’s out there alone, farther ahead than anyone else. We shouldn’t compare ourselves to him.
But Oida-sensei and the others are weirdly hostile toward him. Even though they got scared and backed off when he reached for his machete. Picking a fight with that guy in a place with no police is just stupid. Please, don’t drag me into it.
Still, I didn’t expect Hasebe-san and Ueyano-san to go along with the stone embezzlement.
We weren’t particularly close, but as fellow athletic coaches hired by the academy, we got along decently.
Were they bought off?
It’s possible. Hasebe-san said he’s got his eye on a woman at the academy. He wouldn’t tell me who, probably on guard.
Ueyano-san’s always talking about worrying for his female track team students. His love for high school girls is well-known. He mostly coaches the girls’ team. There’s been talk that he’s used industry connections to get involved with multiple female students. That’s why the male track team members hate him.
The stones we’ve collected from Sanada-san and the combat-capable students add up to nearly 50,000 DP. Oida-sensei wouldn’t tell me how much they’re giving the shut-ins, but since they could afford a magic book, it’s easy to guess they’re only giving the bare minimum for survival.
If they keep collecting stones without the students noticing, they can boost our strength further.
That’d let us save the female students faster. They might’ve promised to prioritize the coaches’ preferences, buying them off.
I wasn’t approached, probably because, unlike the other coaches, I’m not an academy alum. The academy’s graduates have strong ties, thanks to all the famous alumni. They don’t trust an outsider like me. My rigid personality probably doesn’t help.
I want to ditch this risky party and join the baseball team students, but thinking about life after escaping makes it impossible.
I barely got drafted out of college, made it as a pro pitcher, but injuries kept me from sticking in the majors. Got cut before 30, and with no skills outside baseball, I was at a loss for how to support my family.
That’s when an academy alum from my team reached out and got me hired as a full-time baseball coach.
The academy’s pay and benefits are great. At first, I clashed with the head coach, but in my third year, I led the team to Koshien, and we got along better.
But… if what the Succubus Queen said is true, that head coach is probably gone from this world.
It’s sad, but I have to make it back alive for my family.
And I can’t afford to lose my job.
Pissing off the teachers here could lead to who-knows-what being said about me if I make it out.
With most senior teachers gone, Oida-sensei and the others will likely hold power among the faculty. If we get the students back safely, their status will be rock-solid.
The chairman’s a good guy, but if the teachers report that I acted selfishly as an adult and didn’t help the students, I’m done.
I have to work with the teachers to protect the students. That’s the adult thing to do.
Embezzling stones is wrong. But if I push forward and share maps and guardian info with the students, maybe they’ll forgive me.
That’s what I tell myself.
But less than ten days later, I’d come to regret it.
I was fundamentally wrong.
I should’ve noticed but chose to ignore it, escaping reality.
And this test dungeon wasn’t so forgiving.
I’d learn that the hard way.
