Chapter 43: Magic Seal Crystal
Tester Life Day 15, Morning, Goblin Territory, 6th Floor, Sanada Yagumo
“Alright, time to hunt some goblins.”
Appearing at the 6th floor’s transfer circle, I draw my machete from my waist and step out of the magic array.
I took my time with Sayaka this morning, and Oida’s crew held me up, so it’s already 10 a.m. Gotta start earning quick.
The students’ stares in the 1st floor transfer room were annoying, though. Getting a Slave is just a matter of sooner or later, but I guess I was too quick.
Well, some kid in the transfer room was yelling, “I’m gonna buy a Slave too!” so it’s probably working out just as the Queen planned. Pain in the ass for me, though.
“Oh, right, the Magic Seal Crystal.”
I step into the labyrinth all fired up but remember the Magic Seal Crystal and pull the red orb from my Magic Pouch.
I channel mana into what looks like a big marble and toss it in front of me.
The Magic Seal Crystal flashes red, and in the next instant, a familiar gray-furred Kobold stands there.
“Whoa, it’s really like Poké◯on.”
A bit hyped by the first-time experience, I circle the Kobold, checking it out closely.
Huh, this one’s male. It’s a pseudo-lifeform, so it probably can’t reproduce, but damn, its dick and balls are huge. As expected of a dungeon made by succubi.
“Hm? It’s kinda… charming?”
Something about this Kobold’s face feels different.
The Kobolds I’ve seen before were like ferocious Akita dogs, mouths gaping, drooling, eyes crazed.
But this one’s like a Shiba Inu, mouth half-open, staring at me with round eyes.
“Maybe because it’s not hostile?”
Even the same Kobold can feel this different, huh.
But will it really obey?
“Sit.”
I test it by telling it to sit, and it plops down right there.
No idea why it’s sitting seiza-style, though.
“Stand, spin three times, then bark.”
“Wan!”
Alright, it definitely follows orders.
“Choke yourself.”
“W-Wagh…”
“…Stop.”
Its eyes were bloodshot, about to roll back, so I stopped it.
Hmm, guess it’s safe to give it a weapon.
Not that I’m abusing it or anything. I’m just testing how far it’ll obey. Getting backstabbed after arming it would suck.
Feeling a slight pang of guilt as the Kobold wheezes in front of me, I lower the shield I was carrying on my back.
I pull a leather jacket and hat from the Magic Pouch and order it to equip them. All from treasure chests.
Gauntlets and shin guards are too big for a Kobold the size of an elementary schooler, and pants would need tailoring for both length and width, so I give up on those. I can sew, but it’s a hassle.
I check the Kobold after it equips the gear as instructed.
The jacket reaches past its knees, but it’s open in front, so it shouldn’t hinder running. The hat, looking like it’s ready to hop into a Zero fighter, is a bit loose but should be fine if tied down. Honestly, it’s hilarious on a dog.
Next, I give it the iron shield, which covers over half its body, looking like a greatshield.
Finally, I hand it a knife and wrap a homemade potion pouch around its waist. The pouch has two Grade 5 Potions.
I want it to hold the front line as long as possible. If it focuses on defense, it shouldn’t die instantly, and I tell it to drink a potion if injured, so it should be fine.
“Looking sharp. This could work as a tank.”
It kills the Kobold’s biggest strength—speed—but I’m not counting on it as a fighter, so no issue. If it can distract even one goblin, that’s enough.
“Alright, let’s give this a shot. Kobold… oh, a name would be easier. How about Rock? From today, your name’s Rock.”
It’s the nickname of a buddy from my cartel days. A huge guy, solid as a rock. He’s dead now, though.
Fits perfectly for a tank role.
“Wafun!”
“Got it, huh? Let’s go. Walk a bit ahead of me.”
“Wan!”
And so, Rock and I begin our 6th floor exploration.
※
“Fireball.”
Turning a corner—I’ve lost count of how many—I spot three goblins and launch a Fireball.
Two, unable to dodge, burn at their lower bodies and roll around. I leave them to Rock and close in on the unscathed one, slicing its neck.
The sound of combat must’ve alerted others, as a door five meters ahead opens, and three more goblins charge out, swinging clubs.
Wind Cutter. Wind Cutter.
Too close for Fireball, I fire off two Wind Cutters. One hits a goblin’s arm and leg, making it trip. Another drops its club.
The unscathed one swings its club down at me, but I sidestep, and as it stumbles from the miss, I slash my machete into its neck.
Ignoring the goblin collapsing with green blood spurting from its neck, I rush the one that dropped its club and slam my machete into its skull.
The blade cuts through the idiot goblin’s crossed arms, raised in defense, and splits its head.
Leaving the machete lodged down to its neck, I grab the knife from the back of my shield and throw it at the last goblin limping toward me.
The knife buries deep in its chest, and with a shocked expression, it staggers a few steps before collapsing.
“Phew. Rock… looks like you finished them off.”
Glancing back, I see Rock has taken out the two burning goblins.
“Rock, pick up the magic stones.”
“Wan!”
“Convenient.”
Saving me the trouble of finishing blows and collecting magic stones is a big help. It even opens treasure chests for me. This Magic Seal Crystal monster is way more useful than I expected. Truly a rare item.
“That said… this floor’s a pain.”
I pull a sports drink from the Magic Pouch, sipping it while muttering complaints.
As expected, this floor’s a labyrinth.
Dark, hard-to-see passages, tons of forks, and plenty of dead ends. Slacking on mapping even a bit could make it impossible to backtrack.
Goblins in the passages aren’t any more frequent than Kobolds were, but others often join mid-battle.
It’s all because of the small rooms with wooden doors scattered along the passages.
Some have treasure chests, but others have goblins, and like now, they burst out when they hear fighting.
If I don’t deal with the first goblins fast, I could end up fighting six at once in the worst case.
I can handle it, but it forces me to spam magic, draining my endurance.
So, I’m chugging Grade 5 Mana Recovery Potions every time the effect wears off.
Still, treasure chests often have potions, so my stock’s growing.
On the flip side, junk clubs have stopped dropping entirely. Now it’s cheap bows and arrows instead.
With the Magic Pouch, nothing but shields counts as luggage, so it doesn’t matter what drops. I’m not using either anyway.
The Magic Pouch can only hold items that fit through its opening, so round shields or small shields over 30 cm wide are strapped to Rock’s back. Protects its back too—a win-win.
This labyrinth’s trickier than past floors, but luckily, I haven’t seen any traps yet. Still, no slacking. I’ll keep watching for traps as I go.
“Wan.”
Rock trots over, headlamp beam swaying, and hands me the magic stones it collected.
I put the headlamp on Rock’s forehead because this labyrinth is so damn dark. It sometimes attracts goblins, but stepping on a trap would be worse, so I deal with it.
Now, what’s next?
I pull out my mapping notebook, have Rock light my hands, and jot down the paths so far.
It’s been seven hours since I entered the 6th floor, including breaks, but with trap caution and mapping at every fork, I haven’t made much progress. Can’t skip checking rooms either—getting flanked would suck.
“No idea how big this place is, but this’ll take a while.”
If Rock could map, it’d help, but it’s not that smart. Plus, its paw pads can’t hold a pen.
“Complaining won’t help. Let’s call it a day.”
Considering the return trip, I decide to end today’s exploration.
It takes nearly two hours to backtrack to the floor transfer circle. I tell Rock, “Good job,” and order it back into the Magic Seal Crystal. It glows red, just like when it appeared, leaving only the red orb where it stood.
“Hm?”
I thought Rock’s gear would stay behind, but it’s gone. Even the wooden shield it was carrying.
I peer into the Magic Seal Crystal.
There’s Rock, sitting cross-legged, wearing the leather jacket and hat, with the shield at its feet. The treasure chest shield is still on its back.
“So gear and items get sealed with it?”
That’s handy. Maybe next time I’ll give it a backpack with emergency food. That’d free up Magic Pouch space.
Thinking up another use for the Magic Seal Crystal, I step onto the transfer circle and return to the 1st floor.
