Chapter 73: The Right Answer Known Only to God
With her twin drills bouncing proudly, the girl folded her arms and continued her explanation in an elegant, refined tone.
“The divine presence watches over us—His blessed children—at all times and in all places. Sometimes as a loving father or mother cherishing their child, other times as a grandfather or grandmother rejoicing in their grandchild’s growth. And, on occasion, as a friend who learns and plays alongside us. Your hometown church reveres God in a masculine form, but it’s only natural for God’s appearance to vary depending on the region!”
“I-I see… That makes sense. By the way, who are you?”
When I asked, the girl’s eyes widened in realization, and she quickly bowed.
“Forgive my rudeness! My name is Rosary Saint. I’m just an ordinary nun, nothing more.”
“An ordinary nun, huh…”
For someone calling herself ordinary, her hairstyle sure made a bold statement. Well, whatever. I should introduce us too.
“I’m Hugh Pnosis. And this is Loug Vect.”
“Nice to meet you, Sister Rosary!”
“A pleasure to meet you both! Judging by your uniforms, you must be students of the Royal Academy, correct? Oh, I’ve always admired the academy! Due to certain circumstances, I couldn’t enroll myself, but I’d love to hear all about it! And if you don’t mind, may I show you around this grand cathedral?”
“Uh… well, sure, I guess…”
I exchanged a glance with Loug, silently asking What do you think?
“It’s not every day you get a nun to guide you through a grand cathedral. Plus, it could be a good learning opportunity for you, Hugh. I think it’s a great idea!”
“I-Is that so? Alright then… Rosary, we’re counting on you.”
“Leave it to me!”
I’ll just keep it to myself that a small part of me was hoping Loug would say she wanted us to explore the cathedral alone… you know, since it’s technically a date.
“Well then, let me start by explaining why this grand cathedral was built.”
Rosary launched into a detailed explanation, stating that in the year 610 of the Divine Era, an agreement was made between the King of Reese and the Pope of the Church of Divine Gifts… and from there, she continued reciting historical facts like they were straight out of a textbook—all without looking at any notes while leading us through the cathedral.
As expected of a nun, it seemed like Rosary had memorized everything about this place down to the last detail.
A while ago, I probably wouldn’t have understood a single thing she was saying. But lately, thanks to Loug’s help, I’d been putting extra effort into studying history. Because of that, I could grasp about… maybe 40% of what she was saying.
“I see…”
“Hugh, are you actually following what Sister Rosary’s saying?”
“Of course! I totally get it.”
“Really now?”
I quickly averted my gaze from Loug’s suspicious eyes and instead focused on the decorative relief carved into the wall. Each panel seemed to depict a different scene—something about them felt oddly familiar, like I had seen or read about them before…
“Those reliefs illustrate scenes from the sacred texts, depicting the moment when God bestowed skills upon humanity.”
Rosary explained promptly, noticing my curiosity.
“Oh, that makes sense. No wonder they looked familiar.”
“My! Sir Hugh, you’ve read the sacred texts before? That’s truly admirable!”
“Uh, well… I only read a little, just to kill some time.”
“Even so! Lately, many visitors come here just for sightseeing without even glancing at the sacred texts. Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, but still…”
Rosary trailed off, looking a little thoughtful. I could guess what she was thinking—when religion becomes too ingrained in daily life, people tend to take it for granted, and devout followers gradually dwindle.
“Still, it’s kind of strange when you actually see it like this… The depictions of God all look different from one another. I always thought it was normal, but when you see them side by side, it’s pretty fascinating.”
As Loug compared the reliefs, she placed a hand on her chin and mused aloud.
Indeed, each relief depicted a person kneeling before God while receiving their skill, but the figure representing God looked entirely different in each one.
Just like Rosary had mentioned earlier, some reliefs showed God as a man, while others depicted an elderly woman. It was pretty fascinating.
“Come to think of it, when I received my skill, the voice I heard was that of a man. Was it the same for you two?”
“Hmm… no, I think the voice I heard was that of a little girl.”
“As for me, it was a charming gentleman’s voice.”
“So the voice changes depending on the person, huh… That’s kind of…”
“Kind of what? What’s on your mind, Hugh?”
“Ah, it’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
“Hmm?”
Loug and Rosary tilted their heads in curiosity at my awkward attempt to dodge the question. That was close. I almost blurted out something like, “Doesn’t it seem like there are multiple gods?” Given everything that’s happened lately, I was really glad I’d been watching my words more carefully.
Maybe the reason these thoughts even crossed my mind is because of my past life in Japan…
The Church of Divine Gifts is a monotheistic religion. If I casually brought up the idea of multiple gods inside their grand cathedral, I might end up facing an inquisition—or worse, getting burned at the stake. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but at the very least, I’d definitely get some weird looks.
I didn’t want to cause any trouble, especially after Rosary had been kind enough to offer us a tour.
Yeah… better to keep those thoughts to myself.
<Author’s Note>
As of now, the plan is to stick with three main heroines until the very end.
Rosary will remain in the same support heroine category as Alyssa and Merry!
