Rebellion and Meddling.
What Shizuki meant by “that” was probably about that.
It was right after we entered the school, specifically, the second day of homeroom after class division.
The homeroom teacher said, “Now we will decide who will be the class representative.”
He is a male teacher named Fujita, who is in his 40s and is rather rude.
He’s not too strict with the rules and basically doesn’t interfere, so he has a good reputation with the class nowadays.
However, I don’t like the fact that he tries to force the conversation and how he tries to end the troublesome things.
I didn’t like it much, and it was the same at this time.
The class president’s job was mainly to represent the class at events and to do miscellaneous chores.
There were no candidates for the position, probably because the rumor that “being a class rep is hard work and a loss” was already circulating.
“Hey you guys. Is there anybody interested?”
Fujita was clearly annoyed.
I don’t know how it feels, but from the perspective of the students, it’s hard to say that I’ll do it.
In a case like this, it would be normal to recommend someone else.
However, we still didn’t know anything much about the student in the class.
There was no one who stood out at this point, so there was no reason to nominate anyone.
“I guess there’s no choice. Well then, Whom should I….”
As he said this, Fujita slowly began to look around the classroom.
Immediately, many of the students looked away quickly.
Maybe it was a smart move.
In this situation, they probably don’t want to give the other side even a chance to make eye contact.
But a few of the slower ones, including me, seemed to be looking straight ahead.
“…Naga.”
“Ehh…”
After a while, Fujita called out a name.
The girl, who seemed to be named Naga, froze with an uneasy look on her face.
“Naga, I’m sorry, but can you be the class representative?”
“Ehh… Uhmm…”
I felt a sigh of relief spread through the classroom.
If there was only one target, it would be okay.
I could see my classmates thinking that way.
It was easy to see that my classmates were thinking that way.
Fujita also had a look on his face that said that she wouldn’t refuse.
The girl, Naga, seemed to be very earnest and timid.
“It’s for the good of the class. What do you think?”
“….Yeah.”
Maybe, no, definitely, I was a weird one.
But I didn’t like either the way it was done, or the intentions of Fujita and everyone else.
“No, I don’t think that’s the way to decide.”
My words echoed through the classroom louder than I expected.
The rest of the class, Fujita, and Naga all looked dumbfounded.
I guess he never thought that anyone other than Naga would object to his words.
If you argue, the arrow will point at you.
If you don’t want it, the best thing to do is not to say anything.
So, even if someone else had the same idea as me, they would not have sacrificed themselves to object to him.
“You are …Hasumi? Then you’ll do it for me, won’t you?”
But even I don’t intend to do that.
“Sorry but not.”
“Wha…!?”
Fujita looked at me in disbelief.
Then he quickly frowned and said, “Then stay out of it.”
“No, why not? I think it’s one thing to disagree with a decision, and another to run for the nomination.”
“I can’t take my whole time in this! So I’m asking someone who seem to do it”
“It’s not the ones who seem to do it, it’s the ones who don’t seem to be able to say no. Just because the people around you can’t say anything doesn’t mean it’s not a good way to go about it.”
“What…?!”
Fujita was on the verge of losing his temper.
The air around him seemed to be growing frosty.
It was clear to me that he thought that I should be the one to do it then.
So that’s how it turned out.
Well, it was obvious.
But I still chose to interfere, so it was my fault.
Even though I didn’t really feel that way, I had to interpret him like this if I wanted to keep the situation under control.
I took a breath.
Then, after making up my mind, I slowly exhaled.
“Oka–“
“Then I’ll do it!”
Just before I could answer, a girl who hadn’t been involved in the conversation at all suddenly raised her hand.
Everyone’s eyes, including mine, turned to her.
The girl stood up and asked, “Is there no one who wants to compete for Class representative? There are none, right? Then, if it’s fine, I’ll be the class representative please.” she said bravely.
And so the homeroom ended without a hitch.
I don’t know if what I did is right, and I’m not particular about it.
For that matter, such an event wasn’t really a big deal for me.
After all, in the end, I, Naga, and the rest of my classmates were saved.
But, I just couldn’t accept it.
If you can’t take a stand, you can’t oppose their methods.
That’s not right.
It’s not logical.
I didn’t like the atmosphere where no one could point it out, and I didn’t like the fact that some people would fall victim to that atmosphere.
I’m not good at socializing or doing things, but I’m an idiot for getting involved in these things.
