Chapter 5: Pre Employment Training is important, right?
The training room was a stark contrast to the temple-like building before, with space for about ten people, carpeted floors, a whiteboard, pipe chairs, and two-person tables permanently set up.
It’s just like a company meeting room… This place looks completely different from where we were before. Where exactly was this?
“Shoma, please sit at the front. You’re the only one attending this year’s training.”
Prompted, I took a seat at the front.
“Now, let’s begin the pre-employment training. I, Eskaia Kurotsuwell, will be your instructor.”
Eskaia handed me a textbook she had been holding. It had the words “Job Training Textbook” written on the cover, with an illustration of a sword and shield plastered upon it.
“Let me begin with the first page. I’ll explain our company’s primary business, the ‘Hero Dispatch Business.’ This business involves resolving the troubles of clients, such as national agencies, local governments, and trade associations on the Elcrust Continent, and receiving any rewards in exchange for our services.”
Huh!? Wait a minute… National agencies, local governments? We’re talking about Japan right? Wait!? Where is the Elcrust Continent supposed to be?
“Since you don’t seem to have any questions, let’s move on to the second page of the textbook. It’s about the ‘Hero Dispatch’ system. Based on the ‘Nippon-Elcrust Friendship Treaty’ ratified by Japan and various countries on the Elcrust Continent, our company employs Japanese individuals with high hero aptitude to handle tasks like exterminating monsters, guarding VIPs, and exploring ancient ruins across the continent, thereby facilitating trade between the two regions.”
Wait! What’s a hero? I don’t understand this at all!
“Next is page three, the explanation about ‘Heroes.’ On the Elcrust Continent, everyone is endowed with ‘Hero Aptitude’ and ‘Skills.’ Hero aptitude ranges from ‘F to SSS,’ with higher ranks indicating higher level caps and growth values. Currently, individuals born on the Elcrust Continent have been confirmed to reach the highest rank which is ‘A’, with the average rank of a person being ‘D’. It varies slightly depending on the race, but generally, that’s the average for every person. On the other hand, Japanese individuals have an average of ‘B’ rank, and today, we have witnessed the birth of the highest-ranked ‘SSS’ individual.”
Huh? I’m pretty sure it said ‘SSS’ for hero aptitude on that display for me earlier…?
“Next is ‘Skills.’ Hundreds of skills have been identified, each with various unique effects, I’ll explain in detail how to check your status later. So, we’ll skip that for now.”
So, it’s like skills in a game… Or rather, is this a game world?
“Page five, about the main requests we get, ‘Monster Extermination.’ On the Elcrust Continent, there are many creatures called ‘monsters’ that inhabit special habitat zones known as the demon realm. They are ranked from ‘F to SSS’ based on their strength and scope of influence and our company receives requests to exterminate such monsters if they ever appear in any human settlements, with higher-ranked monsters offering higher rewards.”
So, this company dispatches employees as heroes to defeat monsters and earn money?
“Page six is about ‘Checking Status.’ The employee card issued earlier also serves as a common identification on the Elcrust Continent. Since it is usually stored inside the body, it will be expelled when you say ‘Open Menu.’ Would you like to give it a try?”
Eskaia made her employee card appear on the back of her hand. I searched for the employee card in my pocket but couldn’t find it. So, I tried to take it out by repeating after her.
“Open Menu.”
The employee card appeared on the back of my hand. By now, I felt like I was in a different world. Uh oh, did I accidentally get a job at some crazy company?
“Good job. If you’re asked to show your identity, just show your employee card, and except for hostile forces like criminals, thieves, or assassins, everyone else should be fine with it. Next, let’s talk about your status. Could you say ‘Open Status’ while the menu is open?”
A display similar to Eskaia’s employee card popped up.
“Open Status.”
A display appeared just like Eskaia’s. Wow, it’s kinda cool…
“Shoma, you catch on quickly. Now, let’s skip over the name, age, and gender. First, the race. Japanese individuals are categorized as ‘Human,’ while those born on the Elcrust Continent are classified as ‘Human,’ ‘Elf,’ ‘Half-Elf,’ ‘Dark Elf,’ ‘Beastman,’ ‘Dwarf,’ ‘Dragonkin,’ and ‘Winged.’ Each has various unique characteristics, but I’ll skip that for now.”
There are elves and dark elves… Is Eskaia an elf? Oh yeah, looking at the projected display, she is. Seriously, meeting elves in modern Japan, is this for real?

Twenty years ago, Japan and the Elcrust countries suddenly established a connection, and, under a secret treaty, Claude-san’s company was founded as a strategy to benefit from each other. It’s a semi-governmental enterprise. Japan tacitly allows the employment of Japanese individuals with high hero aptitude in exchange for rare resources from the Elcrust, whist the Elcrust desires heroes with the potential to defeat strong monsters, creating a supply-and-demand relationship.
