Chapter 18: Confession at the Graduation Ceremony
A few days had passed since the quarrel between Ryoka-san and Eskaia-san, and now the graduation ceremony at the university had arrived.
The private Seiko University I attend has a small campus in Tokyo and only three faculties: Literature, Social Economics, and Law. Therefore, there aren’t many students that go here, and there are only about a hundred graduates too.
Normally, such a university might have closed long ago, however, it manages its finances wisely, and being located in a prime area of Tokyo, it attracts rich kids from the provinces who dream of living in Tokyo. So, the university’s finances are somewhat stable thanks to substantial donations.
The graduation ceremony was held in the auditorium on campus, and after receiving our degrees, we were now having a graduation celebration inside the auditorium. By the way, I graduated from the Faculty of Social Economics at Seiko University.
It was the easiest faculty to get into even among the F-ranked universities, so I got in without studying at all in high school, and got by just by paying the tuition. To be honest, it’s a faculty that will let you graduate even if you submit a sloppy thesis at the end.
“Shoma has become a respectable working adult… All the hard work I put into raising him was worth it.”
“Mom, please don’t cry. Shoma would be troubled.”
My father had taken time off from work and come to the university with my mother just to attend my graduation ceremony. I used to resent my father, who was always working, but after learning about his involvement with Elcrast through work matters, I began to respect him again.
Since I’ve caused my parents a lot of trouble, I’ll buy them something with my first paycheck. A good bottle of sake for my father, and maybe a necklace for my mother.
As I was thinking about that, someone called out to me from behind.
“HAHAHA, Shoma, congratulations on your graduation!”
There stood a tough-looking middle-aged man with silver hair and sunglasses. Eskaia-san, dressed in a black business suit, was accompanying him.
“Shoma, congratulations. President Claude insisted on coming to congratulate you. So I guided him here.”
“Ah, this is President Claude. It’s a pleasure to meet you in such a place.”
My father shook hands with President Claude. As the liaison officer for the Japanese side of the Foreign Ministry’s Interdimensional Information Oversight, my father was also responsible for pulling funds from Japan’s side, so President Claude probably came to see my father. But my father is just a non-career civil servant who was about to be promoted, so he doesn’t have that kind of authority.
Meanwhile, my mother was talking to Eskaia-san. It seemed like she was trying to find out my favorite food from her. Since I rely on Eskaia-san for all three meals when I’m not at work, I get really excited when I get my favorite food from her.
“What does Shoma like? I’ve learned all the menus, but I wanted to make something he likes… I was thinking of asking his mother.”
“Oh, his mother… Shoma’s favorite food, huh? Surprisingly, he likes a lot Japanese food. He seems to like old-fashioned things like simmered dishes and hijiki. Maybe it’s his father’s influence…”
Mother, my taste may be old-fashioned, but I seriously love deeply flavored lotus root and chicken, and I consider hijiki a miraculous ingredient created by the gods…
While Eskaia-san was earnestly taking notes of my mother’s cooking recipes, Ryoka-san, dressed in a navy recruitment suit with her hair neatly tied up, approached with quick steps.
Is this going to be the same pattern as before…? I sense a tense atmosphere.
“Are you Shoma’s mother?”
“Eh? Yes. Who might you be?”
“I’m Ryoka Aome from the Seiko University Career Services Office. I supported Shoma’s job hunting during his time here at the university.”
“Oh, that’s right. My son was under your care… Thanks to that, he’s able to start working as a social member next month, so I’m relieved.”
As my mother and Ryoka-san exchanged greetings, Eskaia-san glared at Ryoka-san with a frustrated expression. I was sure it was going to be the same as before.
“I, too, have been able to see Shoma off and have made up my mind. He was the only thing left from my work at this university… So today, I just wanted to greet you.”
“That’s very courteous of you.”
Huh? I thought Eskaia-san and Ryoka-san were going to argue for sure, but they just exchanged greetings casually… Eskaia-san seems taken aback too…
As Ryoka-san greeted my mother, she approached President Claude, who was chatting with my father, and began to kneel before him. Graduates and their parents began to whisper to each other as they watched.
“I hope this is not too impolite, but I recognized you as President Claude of Hero Dispatch Services Co., Ltd.! I’ve come to make a direct appeal despite the rudeness. I still have to hand over my previous job, so it will be a mid-term entry, but I’m fine with part-time work, so please consider it.”
Ryoka-san, you’re speaking in a very old-fashioned manner. I remember that tone comes out when you’re drunk. Are you drunk? No, no, it’s not good if the staff here are drunk at this time.
Ryoka-san handed President Claude what seemed to be an envelope containing her resume. President Claude, my father, and even Eskaia-san were taken aback and watched the situation unfold in bewilderment.
Oh no, what’s going on? Ryoka-san, you’re acting crazy. You can’t just quit your job as a university staff member so easily. And what’s with wanting to join our company even as a part-time worker? It doesn’t make sense.
“Hahaha, what an unusual young lady. Isn’t it lacking in manners to make a direct appeal for employment in a place like this?”
“I’m well aware that it’s an act lacking in manners, but I really want to join your company, so I’m doing this. Would you please consider it?”
President Claude looked perplexed and shrugged his shoulders at my father. I don’t think Ryoka-san realizes that our company is a special one. Considering that once registered as a dispatched hero, she would be under national surveillance, I couldn’t really support this job change from my side.
“President Claude, this year we only have my son as a new graduate, and I’ve heard that you’re planning to appoint him as the head of a new team, right? How about hiring this woman too? If our country can benefit from the new team hunting down many pests, we wouldn’t mind backing it up.”
My father suddenly became sharp-eyed and entered negotiation mode with President Claude. It seems that Japan wants to create many debts with the organization through the achievements of Japanese heroes, thereby increasing its resources and technology exchanges.
My father is unexpectedly cunning. I guess you need to be that cunning to become the person in charge of the other world…
“So, does that mean Japan will support her employment? She mentioned that she’s still in the process of handing over her previous job?”
“Yes, if you want her to join promptly, I’ll use my connections to send her to your company. How about it?”
“…Alright. Understood. Let’s allow her to join. Since there’s no time before the entrance ceremony, can Shoma’s team handle the arrangements quickly after that?”
Seriously? President Claude agreed to such an unreasonable request? What is that intimidating guy in the strong sunglasses thinking? Normally, if you poach someone like this, you’d end up in conflict with the university, so you wouldn’t just say “alright,” would you?
See, even Eskaia-san was so astonished that she dropped her notepad.
“Are you really going to hire me?”
“Yes, but you’ll be in a part-time position under Shoma. If you can achieve results, we’ll hire you as a full-time employee. I think you can wrap up the handover from your previous job before joining, so I’ll explain everything after the entrance ceremony.”
President Claude chuckled behind his sunglasses and extended his hand for a handshake, leaving Ryoka-san bewildered by the unexpected answer.
“President! I oppose this!! Allowing such a rude woman to join our company is unacceptable!!”
Oh, look, the Eskaia-san from our world has finally returned and is vehemently opposed against her. That’s the normal reaction, right? But that intimidating guy in the strong sunglasses seems to be an unusual person.
“Eskaia’s opinion won’t be considered as this master has already been decided. If you do strongly oppose this decision, you can step down from Shoma’s team.”
President Claude grinned with a face so intimidating that even the real Italian mafia would be surprised, making Eskaia-san tremble involuntarily.
That’s right. If President Claude decides something, that’s how it goes.
And so, Ryoka-san ended up joining our company with no clear decision, and frankly, I’m happy about it. She’s someone I can rely on as a working adult, and she’s also someone who has supported me closely for a long time.
Yes… I did it… Now, I’ve prevented that woman from taking care of Shoma. He will surely fall for me.
(Ryoka Aome)
Ugh! Is that woman out of her mind, quitting university just to come to our company?
(Eskaia)
