Chapter 17: The Meaning of My Turbulent Situation Makes No Sense
The next destination was the university I attended. Eskaia-san had some business there, and I was simply accompanying her as a guide.
“So, you had business with the employment office, right? In that case, taking this shortcut would be faster.”
Eskaia-san parked the car in the university parking lot and led the way through the campus, holding my hand. Along the way, we ran into Ryuto, who used to be part of our circle of friends. He was the guy who said he would become a policeman after bombarding the job-hunting front with prayer emails at the cafeteria.
“Hey, Shoma. Is that person your girlfriend?”
“Oh my, no, I’m a senior at the company where Hiiragi-kun will be joining. To think of him as my boyfriend would be too presumptuous.”
Ryuto stretched his nose and looked at Eskaia-san.
Haha, she’s really beautiful, isn’t she? If I were to say that when I join the company, she’ll be under my command, would he be stunned?
“Actually, it’s been decided that Hiiragi-kun will be my direct subordinate starting in April, and I’m very pleased about it. Hiiragi-kun has achieved excellent training results, and he’s a talent who will be promoted to ‘manager’ in our company right after joining.”
For some reason, Eskaia-san was bragging to Ryuto about me.
“Seriously? That’s not normal personnel management. What kind of company did you decide on, Hiiragi? After all, you failed so many exams.”
“Well, it’s a dispatch company… I guess?”
When Ryuto heard about my industry, he openly showed contempt and superiority. It was probably what they call “mounting.” Yeah, that’s probably it. He probably thinks it’s a bottom-of-the-barrel hired job because it’s part of the dispatch industry. I used to think the same before I joined them.
“Well, well. I see. It’s good that you’ve found a job. I think working for a dispatch company is tough, so hang in there. If it’s a black company, you’d better quit soon. After all, being a civil servant is better.”
Eskaia-san, realizing that Ryuto was mounting me, delivered a blow to his sense of superiority.
“By the way, at our company, we have 104 days of paid leave, no overtime, excellent employee benefits, and Hiiragi-kun’s salary, starting from S-rank, is a monthly take-home of a million yen. Well, I’m sorry for the meager pay he receives… Anyway, could you please guide us to the employment office after you’re done talking with him?”
“Huh!?”
“That’s what she says… I’m sorry… see you at the graduation ceremony.”
Ah, he’s in shock. Well, of course he is. It’s almost unheard of for a new graduate to take home a million yen in a normal company. I understand Ryuto’s shock too. After all, I, the recipient, am also surprised at what I get.
Leaving Ryuto frozen in shock, I guided Eskaia-san to the employment office where Ryouka-san was waiting.
When we arrived at the employment office, Ryouka-san, who was sitting at the counter, waved at me when she saw me. Then, she guided Eskaia-san and me to the usual sofa for our regular meeting.
“It’s good that you found a job. I was worried too, but I’m glad you made it in at the last minute. Is that the person you were telling me about on the phone?”
I had informed Ryouka-san in advance that there was someone from the company who wanted to thank her. President Claude seemed very grateful to Ryouka-san, who had sent me and so sent a representative in the form of Eskaia-san to thank her.
President Claude was lamenting that he couldn’t hire anyone this term, so maybe he’s planning to focus on recruiting people from our university next year…?
“I’m Eskaia Klotzwell from Hero Dispatch Services Co., Ltd.”
“I’m Aome Ryoka from Seikou University Employment Office.”
“Well, I’m really glad I took the company that Ryoka-san recommended. Thanks to that, I’m assigned to a role as a regular employee from the very first day after joining the company.”
I failed at job hunting, and every time, Ryoka-san treated me to dinner and listened to me complain endlessly at the izakaya. But I couldn’t sleep with my feet pointing towards her.” [EDN: This idiom means that he respects her so much he couldnt face his “dirty” feet towards her or in literal terms : owing a lot to somebody; being indebted; never forgetting someone who has done you a favour]
“Eh!? Is that so? Is Hiiragi okay? It’s not just a part-time job right?”
Although Ryoka-san showed a worried expression, Eskaia-san, who became slightly displeased with her attitude, answered sharply.
“You don’t need to worry, Ryoka-sama. I will assist Hiiragi-kun in all aspects of his work, from general duties to preparing his meals every morning and night, cleaning, laundry, and even transportation, so please don’t worry about him.”
What’s this about? Is it just my imagination that Eskaia-san is emitting a sense of superiority…? But still, Ryoka-san’s face is a bit scary too right now. Did my job hunting really upset her that much?
“I was asking Hiiragi-kun! Eskaia-san, right? You said you would assist him, but how well do you know him? Do you know that he’s the kind of kid who gets depressed and easily hurt when he fails? Do you know that he was hurt a lot and almost fell apart during this job hunting, and finally, after being battered, he decided on your company? So, how much do you plan to hurt him by suddenly giving him a position like that!?”
Although Ryoka-san usually doesn’t get angry, she leaned forward from the sofa and confronted Eskaia-san aggressively.
How rare… I thought Ryoka-san was someone who doesn’t get angry easily… Even though she listened to my complaints with a smile at the izakaya for hours…
“Well, Ryoka-sama, please calm down.”
A loud bang echoed, and Eskaia-san leaned forward and began to glare at Ryoka-san.
“What’s going on all of a sudden? Do you know, Ryoka-sama, that Hiiragi-kun can’t sleep well without a body pillow and prefers red miso soup? I know that because I take care of him.”
“What!? Does that mean you’re living together? What’s going on, Hiiragi!!”
Ryoka-san’s sharp gaze turned to me. It felt as if she could shoot lasers with how sharp it was. She might be scarier than President Claude right now. I feel like conveying the truth accurately would ensure my safety.
“Eh!? Oh, no. We just live in the same company dorm, so she just cooks some meals for me…”
“Eh!? Really!? Geez… this woman. She’s quite something. I thought I could officially start dating Hiiragi after graduation, but she’s a hidden threat…”
“Ryoka-sama was a university staff member. I don’t think it’s appropriate to have a romantic relationship with a student! I’ll pretend I didn’t hear what you just said!”
“Kuh! She intends to steal my Hiiragi!”
Um, I’m lost. I’m just watching their exchange dumbfoundedly, but are they… arguing and fighting over me? Nope, that can’t be it, and I should be careful at times like this when my luck has been good lately.
It must be a harem-like situation. Haha! If I say that, I might get hit by a truck and actually reincarnate into another world, or I might even get stabbed by both of them with a knife. So, pretending not to notice and ignoring it is the smartest way to resolve the situation smoothly without causing any trouble. Oh, let’s have some tea to calm down in the meanwhile.
“As Eskaia-san said. Actually, I’m dating Hiiragi, so could you stop cooking breakfast for him?”
“Booooo!! *cough, cough*.”
Why did she suddenly say something incomprehensible like that? Wait, am I dating Ryoka-san…? No, no way. She treated me to meals and comforted me, but it was more like a dependable older sister position. If she were called my girlfriend, I’d blush and wouldn’t be able to talk to her properly.
Ryoka-san smells really nice, is beautiful and cool, and she’s popular even among the other male students. It’s unthinkable that such a person would be my girlfriend.
“Um, Ryoka-san, we’re not dating though, right?”
“Hiiragi, shut up! This meddlesome woman will get a piece of my mind! Just relax.”
“You keep quiet and listen, this bothersome woman is clearly someone who’s troubling my precious Hiiragi. Can’t you realize that Hiiragi is feeling troubled? Besides, Hiiragi is about to graduate from university soon. His relationship with Ryoka-sama should end there.”
Uh oh… What’s with this chaotic situation? Please stop saying that I suddenly entered a period of popularity just because I entered another world. Both Eskaia-san and Ryoka-san are wonderful women, but it’s very uncomfortable when they argue like this…
“Um, could both of you calm down? Because everyone is watching, you know.”
I try to calm them down, but they keep glaring at each other without looking away.
Seriously? Oh no, the important people from the employment office are watching Ryoka-san, so this is bad. Declaring at work that Ryoka-san, who is said to be dating a student (even though she’s not), is just asking for trouble.
“I’m sorry, everyone. It’s just a little misunderstanding, so please don’t worry.”
I smile and nod to the students and staff around me. Somehow, I have to get through this situation smoothly…
“Eskaia-san and Ryoka-san, everyone is watching us!”
“Shut up and stay out of this!!”
After this, Eskaia-san and Ryoka-san continued to reenact a chaotic scene of arguing over me (or so it seemed), and a rumor quickly spread throughout the university, with various witnesses including the students and staff.
The rumor was that “Miss Ryoka was two-timing a company employee,” which was an unwelcome rumor, and I was scolded by my seminar professor and teased by my former friends, who said things like “I hope your happiness explodes.”
Of course, Ryoka-san also received a stern warning from the university, and Eskaia-san was scolded by the university as well. And for some odd reason, I was scolded along with them.
This woman intends to steal my Hiiragi. I need to cut ties with her as soon as possible. (Eskaia)
This woman is fully convinced that she can persuade my precious Hiiragi and make him hers. Geez, what a troublesome woman. (Ryoka)
