- Chapter 75: I'm Sorry
Inside the Spoca facility, there were so many activities available that it was hard to choose where to start.
“Ah… we lost…”
“Nice pass, Sato-kun!”
“That was all Natsuki’s skill.”
“Sato-kun, you’re surprisingly athletic…”
“Thanks, Kumagawa, but I still have a lot of room for improvement.”
At the moment, we were playing a three-on-three game on the mini basketball court.
Thanks to Kumagawa joining us, we were able to play team games, which was a relief.
“We got completely crushed…”
“Sato, are you even a guy?”
“This is so humiliating as a girl…”
“All I’m doing is passing the ball. It’s our ace who’s scoring all the points, right, Natsuki?”
“D-don’t say that, you’re making me blush…”
I responded to Natsuki’s friends with a smile.
Honestly, I wasn’t doing much running around either.
In most ball games—whether it was basketball, volleyball, or tennis—what mattered most was positioning, movement, and timing.
Even though I tried not to think about my past experiences in sports clubs, my body seemed to remember and moved naturally.
“Still in it! We haven’t lost yet! The score is only a 10-point gap!!”
“Haha, alright, let’s play seriously now.”
I rolled up my uniform’s sleeves, tied my jacket around my waist, and got ready.
“…!”
Natsuki’s friends froze, staring at me intently.
…Could you not look at me like that? It’s embarrassing!
“I-I’ll just keep marking my current opponent like I’ve been doing…”
“Come on, that’s boring. How about we let Kumagawa take the next shot?”
“Ehh, I don’t think I can…”
“You’ll be okay! Natsuki will draw their blockers away. Right, Natsuki?”
“I-I’ll do my best!”
“That’s the spirit. Besides, as a fighting game player, you’re good with combos. Think of dribbling as stringing combos together!”
“Hehe… Combos? That’s chaining attacks, not dribbling…”
Natsuki tilted her head, completely confused.
Well, to be fair, that comparison made no sense!
****
“We lost… badly…”
“Haha, we won by a landslide!”
“T-this is frustrating…”
“I can’t believe you’re a guy…”
“…I might be feeling something awaken within me…”
Wait, was one of them alright?
In the end, it was a decisive victory for our team in the mini basketball game.
Halfway through the game, Kumagawa hit her stride and kept landing shot after shot.
When left unmarked, no one could stop her.
That said, the other team couldn’t just leave their idol-like ace, Natsuki, unmarked either.
Truly, ours was a dream team. Should we go pro and head to America?
“Kumagawa-san, you’re actually good enough to join the basketball club with those skills!”
“Y-you really think so?”
Natsuki and Kumagawa seemed to have gotten much closer to each other.
They probably hadn’t interacted much before, but sports truly had a way of breaking down barriers.
“Hey, how about we take a break and check out the arcade section?”
“That sounds good.”
“I think I’ll try that ‘washing machine’ game~”
The arcade section inside Spoca had rhythm games and fighting games available for unlimited play, though there were no claw machines.
It was all part of the facility’s entry fee, which gave it a “free-to-play” feel and made you feel like you were winning just by being there.
“…” Fidgeting.
“Well then, we’ll head over to the fighting games.”
“Fighting games?!”
“Sounds good!”
“Let’s meet back here around 5 PM, okay?”
“Got it. Let’s go, Kumagawa.”
“O-okay!”
As expected, she was a true fighting game enthusiast. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation, unable to contain her excitement.
Alright, time to give it my all (famous last words).

[YOU LOSE]
[YOU LOSE]
[YOU LOSE]
[YOU WIN]
[YOU LOSE]
“Hah… hah… (utterly beaten).”
“Hehe, you fell for the fake jump again.”
Apparently, a “fake jump” was a technique where you timed a jump attack very low to the ground as your opponent got up from a knockdown.
It was designed so that if the opponent used an invincible move as they stood up, the attacker landed on the ground in time to block it.
Invincible moves left the user wide open if blocked, often leading to a punishing counterattack—or worse, a death loop.
“So, that’s how it works.”
“Pretty much.”
Even after her brief explanation, I understood the concept but couldn’t quite execute it myself.
Meanwhile, my go-to tactic—the Rising High Kick invincible move—was thoroughly countered. Truly pathetic.
Imagine a setup where you jumped in for offense but could still block an invincible counterattack. It really did feel like a scam.
[”I’m confident in fighting games, challengers welcome!]
…Who was the idiot who’d said that during introductions?
I was getting destroyed out here! So embarrassing!
“Those advanced techniques aside, how do you even pull this off so easily?”
“Well, once you get used to it, it’s not too hard.”
“Seriously? I nearly passed out just looking at the command inputs for those supers!”
“Hehe, mastering this one technique in an actual fight took me about a year…”
“A year?!”
Kumagawa’s character was a huge bear-like woman named Hinano.
She wielded a katana instead of fists, cutting opponents down with a flurry of slashes. Honestly, it was a miracle her enemies didn’t die from her attacks.
Her ultimate move, “Tenpa Sealing Slash”, was absurdly powerful—a high-damage super that left little opening for counters. Hilariously, it also turned the opponent’s hair into sleek, straight locks as a cosmetic side effect.
The command input was ridiculously difficult, though. You’d probably break the controller trying to do it repeatedly. But Kumagawa executed it effortlessly, unleashing it whenever she wanted. No wonder I kept losing.
“Why did you pick this character?”
“Well… her name is… the same as mine. It felt like fate.”
“Ah, that’s important. What’s your name written as?”
“With the ‘hina’ of a bird’s chick ‘雛ひな’, and the kanji ‘乃の’ that looks like a katana, so it’s ‘雛乃ひなの’ (Hinano)…”
“Got it. That’s a great name.”
Now that I thought about it, Hinano even carried a katana too.
Still, calling her by her last name might be better, just to avoid confusion.
“Even so, I lost a couple of matches. That’s never happened before!”
“Haha, that was just dumb luck on my part. Anyway, it’s about 5 PM—let’s head back, Kumagawa.”
“O-okay.”
We stood up from our seats, realizing how late it had gotten.
“Hey, Kumagawa.”
“Hm?”
Before we met back up with the others, I called out to her.
“Would you be my friend?”
At school, she sat next to me.
We had so many shared hobbies and seemed to get along well.
I was sure we could become good friends.
“…”
But she averted her gaze, lowering her head.
A shadow darkened her expression.
“…I’m sorry…”
Her words were clear.
It was an unmistakable rejection.
