- Chapter 69: First Convenience Store Part-Time Job
“Hmm, I slept well!”
After that, I went through administrative procedures with the Manager and the others.
I was given a simple resume form to fill out, which I’d completed and submitted. As expected of a convenience store, they had almost everything.
Since Watari-san and the others had already set up a bank account for me, my part-time wages would be deposited there. They even confirmed it with him via message.
The uniform belonged to the previous employee, who was also male, and it was almost the same size as mine, so they handed it over to me.
If I was concerned, I could get it cleaned… but I wasn’t, so it was fine as it was.
After that, I went home.
Maybe because I hadn’t run or done strength training in a while, I managed to fall asleep easily after doing both.
Morning came, and I woke up.
The place I was heading to—
☆
“So, when a customer hands you 10,000 yen, could you say ‘10,000 yen received’?”
“Understood.”
“And then, press this button to open the register…”
In the convenience store.
At the register counter.
It was training time from the morning.
As a new hire, I wasn’t expected to be useful right away.
Even so, I’d still be getting paid for this.
I appreciated it… though guilt outweighed my gratitude!
“I think I’ve got the gist of it. The register seems manageable on my own. Can I give it a try?”
“Wow! That’s amazing! Most people are scared at first!”
“Well, I am getting paid for this…”
“You don’t have to push yourself so hard! Alright then—Hokuto-san, Sato-kun is taking over the register!”
“Wait, seriously? Got it.”
The work itself didn’t seem too difficult.
At least from what I’d heard so far, it seemed doable.
To become an asset, though, practice was key.
One wouldn’t get the hang of things unless they actually did them—just like in sports.
“You’ve got guts, huh? Let me know if anything comes up.”
“Thank you for your support.”
“…You really don’t seem like a guy at all. The last newbie quit because they were too scared of the register.”
“Haha. Well, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.”
“Is that how it is? Oh—there’s a customer.”
Ding-ding-ding
“Welcome!”
“Welcome!”
“Welcome!”
My first part-time job. My first customer turned out to be a high school girl around my age.
Even though it was the weekend… she was in her uniform. Probably for club activities?
“Alright, give it a shot. She usually pays in cash, so it should be easy.”
“Understood.”
Hokuto-san gave me some advice.
She seemed like someone who knew her job well.
“I’ll be watching from behind! Good luck!”
“Yes.”
The Manager also offered her encouragement.
…Honestly, with this much support, there wasn’t much to be afraid of.
“…”
“…”
Though their stares were making me itch just a little!
“Uh… P-Please…”
“Welcome. Let me take your items.”
She brought over a sports drink, an onigiri rice ball, and a snack bread. All carbs.
“480 yen in total… How would you like to pay?”
For some reason, she seemed more nervous than me.
Her fidgeting completely distracted me from my own nerves.
It was like when you were in a haunted house but stopped being scared because the friend next to you was freaking out even more.
“Oh! C-Cash…”
“I’ll take the 500 yen then. Would you like a bag?”
“N-No…”
“All right then. Here’s your change of 20 yen and your receipt—”
Her hand trembled as she reached out for the coins.
Wow—her hand was shaking so much! If I handed these over normally, they’d go flying!
“Here you go.”
I cupped her trembling hand with mine as I gave her the change.
Now that I thought about it—back in my old world—I’d sometimes receive change like this too. Was that also to prevent coins from falling?
Working as a cashier made me realize things like this for the first time.
“T-Thank you very much…”
“Huh? Thank you for shopping with us!”
I bowed slightly as she left.
Yeah—she was a good customer. That went smoothly without any issues.
Nothing dramatic happened after all.
“…”
“…”
“Haha… Was that okay?”
In the back room.
The Manager and Hokuto-san peeked their heads out and burst into laughter.
“That was perfect!!”
“You’re amazing! Never seen a newbie stay so calm before.”
“…Really?”
Man—it was embarrassing hearing that. It wasn’t anything special at all.
Still—it didn’t feel bad either.
“When I started out, I dropped coins everywhere and caused chaos!”
“When I started, the customers got scared and ran off!”
“…?”
The Manager’s story made sense—but what about Hokuto-san!? What did she do!?
☆
“All right then, Sato-kun can clock out now!”
“Oh, it’s already this late?”
Before I knew it, the afternoon had passed by.
It was the weekend after all and lunchtime had been fairly busy.
Still, it wasn’t as bad as I’d expected.
As long as I stuck to just handling the register, there weren’t many unexpected situations to deal with.
For rare cases like package pickups or insurance renewals, the Manager or Hokuto-san handled those anyway.
“Well, the next shift should be here soon… Oh! There she is! Takanashi-san, you’re up next! This is Sato-kun, the one we mentioned earlier!”
“Oh~ Nice to meet ya! A boy huh?”
“Nice to meet you too.”
The person who came in wearing the uniform was an older woman—probably past retirement age working part-time here?
“Hm… You’ve got quite an attractive figure there, especially your waistline…”
“What!? Takanashi-san!! What are you saying?!”
Back in my old world, I’d encountered pervy old men, but over here it was pervy old women instead?
This reversed world still took some time getting used to!
“Haha—it’s fine if you want to touch me.”
“What!!”
“…?”
“It’s really okay.”
“T-Then just a little touch…”
“No way!!”
The Manager stopped her with such intensity that it felt like her blood pressure might spike!
Honestly, I wouldn’t care if someone touched this body, it wasn’t worth even pocket change anyway!
“Well—if you really want to touch—you’re welcome to.”
“He said it’s okay!”
“No no no way!!”
“…Then maybe just me…”
“If you keep messing around—I’ll call the police!”
“We’re sorry!!”
“Haha…”
In the end, they apologized after being scolded by Hokuto-san.
Seriously—even if she was the Manager, and even if Takanashi-san was older—this was still ridiculous!
“Well then, you can clock out now… Next time, we’ll try stocking shelves or cleaning!”
“Understood.”
“As for working at the register… maybe we should avoid that for now…”
“Huh?”
“Well, you were getting hit on earlier, weren’t you?”
“Oh… yeah…”
The Manager pointed out something true enough—even today alone, I’d been approached three times already.
[Newbie!? What school do you go to? Eek!]
They’d all run off on their own though, probably because of Hokuto-san glaring at them from behind me.
“Aren’t you scared?”
“No, not really. If anything, it’s kind of flattering.”
“What!? But still, from now on, let’s keep you away from registers!”
“I don’t mind, it does slow things down after all.”
“…?”
“What?”
“If things ever get too tough, just let us know, okay?”
She looked worried, as if overly concerned—but maybe that was normal in this world?
But for me—
“It’s actually the opposite. I’m fine.”
“! Oh, I’m glad to hear that!”
