- Chapter 41: Muddy Torrent
“Alright, I’m heading out.”
“Dad’s working a part-time job this morning too, so make sure to get along, okay?”
“Your dad already made lunch for you both.”
“Yes, thank you.”
“…Have a good day.”
Sora-nii was definitely acting strange.
The lazy, snack-hoarding brother I knew was gone.
Last night, he had laid out his futon and gone to bed even earlier than I did. He seemed pretty tired.
And then the next morning, he still hadn’t gone back to normal.
“What’s with all this fat…? No more snacks for me for a while.”
Now, he was in the living room doing strength training, pinching at his stomach.
Normally, he would be lying around, playing on his phone while eating snacks. He’d scatter crumbs into my space and leave garbage everywhere. Back then, he was basically a walking garbage machine.
But now—
“Apparently, these snacks are mine, but if you want them, Akari, you can have them.”
“…”
“What…”
The brother who used to steal my snacks and guard his own with his life? That same trashy brother… was now offering his snacks to me?
“…You’re staring too much. So, do you want it or not—”
“I-I do! But… you should eat some too, Sora-nii.”
“Eh? Sure, why not. Just a little, though.”
“…”
“There’s no poison in it or anything.”
“Ugh…”
“Haha. This is a good chance to ask you some things I’ve been wondering about.”
He smiled and turned to face me. Then—
“Can you tell me about the ‘old’ me and who you are?”
****
“So, it was something like that.”
“A lazy, trashy, idiot brother… seriously?”
What even was that pathetic version of me? No wonder my stomach was all flabby now.
Apparently, he had joined the crafts club but quit because the girls didn’t take to him as much as he’d hoped.
What was wrong with him? Did he join just to get popular?
…It honestly annoyed me that part of him resembled me. But hey, I had ten years of dedication to my own club, so I won!
“He’d also leave the juice bottle with just a sip left and then blame it on me if our parents got mad!”
“And whenever my friends came over, he’d act all nice, pretending to be a good big brother!”
“And the moment my friends would leave, he’d start complaining nonstop… and call it an ‘apology gift’ whenever he’d steal snacks from me!”
Wow. She wasn’t stopping. It was like a floodgate of grievances had burst open.
I could feel how much she had bottled up over time. Sorry about that, previous me.
“I’m starting to hate myself now…”
“Ah… but you’re different now, Sora-nii. So it’s okay…”
“Haha. What even is this? I’m not the ‘old’ me, but I’m not really a new me either, am I?”
“…Yeah.”
“I see. Well, no point in thinking too hard about it.”
“…”
It really was a long dream.
And I had to admit, I was more surprised than I thought I’d be to learn how garbage-like I used to be.
“So, what about you, Akari?”
“…You really don’t remember anything, do you, Sora-nii?”
“Nope. I don’t even know your age.”
“I’m in my second year of middle school!”
“Oh. Are you in any clubs?”
“…Ping pong.”
“Huh.”
“Trashy-nii kept nagging that one had to play baseball, basketball, or soccer if they wanted to be popular.”
“…What?”
Wait. What did she just say?
Don’t tell me… it was reversed here too?
I could feel the cold sweat starting to drip.
“Huh?”
“No, I mean… you’re a girl, right? I get basketball, but… baseball? Soccer? Oh, maybe softball—”
“What are you even talking about? For girls, those three are the main ones.”
“Wait… what about boys?”
“Huh? Boys might have boys’ basketball, sure, but no one plays baseball or soccer. No school even has teams for those.”
“…”
Ah.
This world really was insane.
Everything was reversed… even sports.
“…Sora-nii?”
“Sorry.”
“Your face looks pale…”
“…Sorry, I’m fine.”
If this dream didn’t end…
What would happen to me?
I’d dedicated ten years to my sport in that world. I’d finally started seeing the results of all my hard work as well.
But now, you’re telling me that sport doesn’t even exist here?
[You’re amazing, Sora!]
[You really pulled it off!]
[We actually beat the seniors!]
What about them?
What about my teammates?
Did any of them exist in this world?
No. They wouldn’t.
The sport itself didn’t exist here.
And from what I’d heard, the “me” in this world never even touched athletics.
What a joke.
And what if… I couldn’t go back?
[Hey, Sora! Let’s stop by the arcade on the way home.]
[They’ve got nuggets on sale today!]
What about those dumb, fun times I had with my guy friends?
[We really worked hard today, huh?]
[Nothing beats ice cream after practice.]
What about my strong, reliable teammates?
[Sora, get to bed already!]
[We’ll be at your game tomorrow, so don’t mess it up!]
What about my parents?
“…!”
Everyone. All of them.
Was I never going to see them again?
“Sora-nii!”
“…Ah. Yeah…”
I felt dizzy.
The sound of my own heartbeat was deafening.
I couldn’t think about it.
I couldn’t let my mind go there.
I had to focus on something fun instead.
This was just a long, long dream.
“…That’s right…”
Yeah, let’s go with this:
In my original world, my old self was still living a fun life.
And this “me”—this version of me—got thrown into this bizarre world. Like I was sent here to replace the Sora Sato who had died.
That had to be it.
Like one of those isekai transfer stories my friend used to talk about. Or maybe not a transfer—was this more like possession? Whatever.
This was just some parallel world where everything was reversed.
“What even is this…”
“Sora-nii…”
“!”
…Screw that.
Did this mean I was stuck here forever?
No, this had to be a dream.
That was the only explanation.
It was more convenient that way.
Even I wasn’t making sense anymore.
Was this confusion and pounding in my chest just another part of the dream?
No, stop thinking about it!
“Hey, hey! Are you okay!?”
“Yeah, sorry. I’m fine now.”
The flood of anxiety and panic threatened to overwhelm me.
But I forced myself to shove it all down and gave Akari a smile.
She was right there beside me.
As a man, I couldn’t let her see me like this any longer.
“How about some snacks? I’ll make tea, too.”
“…Okay. Are you really alright?”
“I’m fine. Thanks, Akari. You’re so kind.”
“Ugh…”
“Now then, what should I have to drink?”
I walked over to the stove and started boiling water, pretending like everything was normal.
“I’ll find a way back… won’t I?”
I whispered this so softly that no one could hear me.

i like how he had a really good life from before, reminds me of that isekai where the MC was a legit mage from Earth(which has real magic and magic organizations instead),he had accomplishments and an ambition to carry on his father’s magic thesis legacy but then he gets summoned alongside a “hero” and their female childhood friend on a world where magic is outdated unlike from his original world where magic has basically become as advanced as science technology.
dammn I like how they didn’t just ignore the mc having parents and other friends. I hate when reincarnation novels just make the mc not care about their past lives.
Tbf usually the ppl who get reincarnated had shitty lives to begin with so they don’t rly miss their past esp if they get harem and cheat skills
For real! Almost every isekai is like. “And then I came to another world from Earth….which we will never mention or bring up again.” Its just used as a plot device to set up a certain aged character and ignore all the backstory.
