- Chapter 26: Changing World
After taking a day off from school, I was finally heading back today.
Yesterday, my dad was worried, so we’d gone to the hospital for a check-up.
It turned out to be just a light bruise, so I was cleared to return to school quickly. That was a relief.
“Take care.”
“…I’m off.”
In the morning, I waved back at my dad and headed toward Aimei High. This kind of normalcy was something I couldn’t have imagined before.
A bus ride of about ten minutes, then a short walk after getting off.
On my way to school… I thought I saw the guys from Rose Garden.
“Huh?!”
“?”
Before I knew it, one of them approached me and apologized.
“I-I know this doesn’t make up for it, but… I’m sorry!”
“…I don’t care about it any longer. That was just me settling things.”
“R-Really?”
“Yeah. That’s what I said.”
“!!”
Honestly… because of that night, I was able to reconcile with my dad.
To begin with, that whole situation happened because I wasn’t strong enough.
So it was fine. If they came at me again, I’d deal with it then.
“A-And me too…!”
“Me too!!”
“We’re really sorry…!”
“…”
Honestly, when they bowed their heads this much, it was kind of awkward.
Because—
“…Hey, isn’t that her?”
“Isn’t she dangerous?”
“That’s the girl who took down Rose Garden…”
The stares around us were… well, let’s just call them hopeless.
“…Huh? Took down Rose Garden?”
“What? You didn’t know?”
“After that incident, everyone left Rose Garden, and it collapsed.”
“No way…”
“Well yeah, after what she said…”
“It woke people up or something…”
“Anyway, even the leader has changed completely.”
“What?”
“You didn’t hear? It’s like she’s a totally different person now—quiet and subdued.”
“At school too…”
I didn’t know that. Honestly, it was kind of scary.
“They say the shock from ‘that’ made her change mentally.”
“That?”
“The ‘Judgment Kiss’, you know!”
“It’s literally legendary…”
For some reason, the girls talking about it seemed oddly proud.
“‘The Lightning Strike!’”
“‘The Steel Twin Spheres!’”
“‘The guy who ended Rose Garden with a kiss!’”
C-Cool… He got such an enviable nickname?
“That’s so badass!”
“And he works at that convenience store!”
“I want him to stun me too…”
“I wouldn’t recommend it.”
“Huh?”
“What do you know?!”
“…What do you think?”
“!!!”
I smirked meaningfully. Their jaws dropped in exaggerated surprise.
Well, I deserved to enjoy a little superiority sometimes too.
“See ya. You guys are in the industrial department, right?”
Leaving them behind, I headed toward the general education classrooms. The flashy types thinned out as I walked further. Most of the delinquents were in the industrial department anyway.
I wanted to go to college someday, like my dad—wearing a suit and looking cool as a businessman. As for what I wanted to do… I’d figure that out from now on.
“…”
“Ah…”
“S-Scary…”
And then there were the stares in the general education department classroom.
[—Azuse, you aren’t part of Rose Garden anymore; you are just an ordinary high school girl now—]
Was this how people looked at an ordinary high school girl? I’d like to say that out loud, but this was just karma for my actions.
I’d blend in slowly and “normally”. No more running away. Spreading out my study materials on my desk, I waited for homeroom to start.
“…”
…I didn’t get any of this! Why did I buy university prep books when I was only a first-year?!
“…Excuse me~”
“…”
This was bad. I’d have to buy first-year books after all.
“Helloooo~?”
“…”
But then again, it’d be a waste not to use these since I’d already bought them. Even if they didn’t make sense now, maybe if I forced myself through one question while looking at the answers—
“Sato-sama wears boxer briefs.”
“?!?!!?”
“Oh wow, you actually reacted.”
“W-Who are you?!”
“Natsume Natsume Kaho here! Self-proclaimed ‘girl born from summer’.” (Natsume (なつめ): The name “Natsume” is derived from the Japanese word 夏 (natsu), meaning summer. Me (め): The suffix in “Natsume” can imply bud or growth, symbolically connecting the idea of a new beginning or blossoming, much like the association with the season of summer.)
“…Seriously, who are you…”
“I’m your ‘sister-in-arms’.”
“Huh?”
What did she just say? Sister-in-arms? Arms…? Boxer briefs? (T/N: Here the term used is “竿姉妹” which means women who slept with the same man)
“(Realization)”
“That’s right! Nice to meet you, Ai-chan.”
“H-How do you know my name? You’re in another class!”
“Well~ Why do you think?”
“Did he tell you?”
“…” Whistles
“That idiot…”
Kaho—or whatever her name is—tried whistling innocently but failed miserably. Too obvious.
He must’ve told her about how I didn’t have friends at school and set this up behind my back. Typical Sato…
“But studying delinquents are hilarious.”
“What’d you say?!”
“Hahaha! Amazing! You actually respond like that!”
“…”
“And at night, Sato-sama will ‘respond’—”
“Stop right there!!!”
The once gray days in Class 1-B when no one talked to me…
And even at home where conversations with Dad barely happened…
Those dull days…
They were nothing but ash-colored monotony as I kept running away from this world—
“Haha! Just as funny as they said!”
“Shut up…”
But ever since meeting him…
My world had started filling with color once again—surprisingly fast.
****
“So, that time when Kanau got taken down…?”
“Yeah, that thing? A stun gun.”
“Huh?”
“Kissed her, used the opportunity to slide up her thigh, and zapped her.”
“N-no…”
“You guys are pervs anyway, probably just focused on the mouth, so you didn’t notice, huh?”
“…Yeah, I guess.”
“That’s called misdirection (with smug face).”
“Misdirection?”
“Haha, yeah. It was easy since her skirt was short. Because she was a delinquent, it could be pulled off successfully.”
“What a slimy way to do it…”
“But hey, it worked, didn’t it?”

THE STUN GUN! I forgot all about it!
E-Evil….
