- Chapter 16: Please Keep Quiet Inside the Store
“What are you doing here?”
“Is there a problem if I’m here?”
Standing in front of me was the Yankee from Aimei High.
As I headed to my part-time job at the convenience store after school, there she was, standing outside. Her flashy brown hair swayed in the breeze—though I was pretty sure she was subtly shaking her head to make it look like it was flowing naturally.
I swear, she was definitely influenced by mangas.
“Look, if you’re just standing outside the entrance like that, it kind of makes it hard for customers to come in. You look like a gatekeeper.”
“From the point of view of the staff, isn’t that helpful?”
“From the store’s perspective, it’s a huge nuisance. Move aside. I’m about to start my shift. Time for some joyful labor!”
“…Then I’ll just—”
“Huh? Did you say something?”
“N-no, it’s nothing.”
Why the awkward silence?
Oh crap—the manager was watching us through the glass window, glancing over nervously. She looked like she was misinterpreting this as some kind of trouble brewing.
“Later. Go home and do your homework or something.”
I must fulfill my duty to work (firm resolve).
Passing through the automatic doors, I was met by the cooled air of the store and the concerned look of the manager.
“Sato-kun!”
“Hey, Manager!”
“Umm, that girl just now…”
“She’s kind of an acquaintance. We weren’t arguing or anything.”
“Ah! That’s a relief.”
I headed to the staff room, slipped on my uniform, and felt an odd sense of determination settle in.
“Yo, Sato.”
“Good evening, Hokuto-senpai. You clocking out?”
“Yeah. Hardly any customers come through here, so as long as you and the manager are around, you’ll be fine.”
Hokuto-senpai had a charming ponytail and always exuded a casual vibe. Blonde, chatty, and friendly, she was a university student who contrasted sharply with our manager.
Despite her carefree demeanor, she was incredibly polite with customers. Honestly, it was kind of admirable—enough to make one fall for her.
Since my shift hadn’t started yet, I figured we could chat for a bit.
“By the way, why is this store so quiet all the time?”
“Well… how do I put it? Back in the day, this neighborhood had a worse reputation than it does now.”
“Really?”
“You know how we don’t let customers use the restroom? That’s a holdover from those days.”
“Now that you mention it, yeah. Why is that?”
“Because of all the nonsense that used to happen—shoplifting, drunks hogging the restroom, and even drug activity. There were always troublemakers and shady characters hanging around. It was a mess.”
“Huh. I didn’t know that.”
“Yeah. It’s said that the state of a convenience store restroom reflects the area’s safety.”
Ah, so that explained it.
The cheap rent when I moved here suddenly made a lot more sense now. Sure, I’d run into my fair share of drunks and oddballs around here…
“Nowadays, things are much better—there are more convenience stores nearby, and police patrols have increased. But I guess the place still carries a bad image.”
“I never would’ve guessed it was that bad before.”
“Well, back then, there was even a group going around serving as pseudo-police, or so I’ve heard.”
“Wait, what?”
Hokuto-senpai’s face suddenly turned red.
“Huh? What’s that about?”
“L-like I said, I don’t know much about it, but there was a group called the Rose Garden. They’d patrol the town, keeping unruly troublemakers and drunks in check… or so I was told.”
“Sounds like a decent bunch. The name’s a bit… unique, though.”
“…”
Why the sudden silence, Senpai? You’re not fooling anyone.
But still…
If “she” was part of this Rose Garden, it must’ve been a decent Yankee group after all.
“Alright, see you later, Senpai. I’m heading in.”
“Y-yeah! Manager, I’m clocking out!”
“Great work today, Hokuto-san! Sato-kun, I’m counting on you!”
“Got it!”
Rush hour was about to begin—students after club activities and salarymen finishing work. Time to give it my all!
**
“Welcome!”
“Uh, hey… aren’t you the one who said you’d…?”
“Busy right now. Sorry.”
“S-sorry!”
**
“Welcome!”
“Hey, kid, come here for a sec.”
“Yes? What can I help you with?”
“Could you scratch around here for me? It’s itchy, you know—maybe apply some ointment—”
“Do you really need to touch my back for this? You’re just trying to cop a feel, aren’t you? Lady, I’ll sue you for harassment.”
“Eek!”
**
“Welcome…”
“And so, she got dumped by the guy before they could even hook up!”
“HAHAHA!”
“Let’s buy these condoms and hand them to her. She won’t need them anyway!”
“Dude, that’s savage—”
“Excuse me. Can you keep it down a bit?”
“Huh? Who the hell are you?”
“Man, what’s with this guy acting all tough?”
Sigh
“Stop sighing, you jerk!”
“Do you want me to report this to your school? You’re all Aimei students, right?”
“…Huh?”
“Like that would work—”
“See that security camera up there?”
“!?”
“There won’t be a second warning. Keep it down in the store.”
**
“Man, I’m exhausted…”
“Yeah, there were a lot of annoying customers today.”
Flirty girls? Whatever. They were just messing around—it was tolerable.
But that creepy old lady? Ugh. The roundabout nonsense was driving me crazy. Honestly, at least if she’d been direct, I would’ve known how to deal with it. No, wait. That was scarier.
As for those rowdy Aimei students? Next time they pulled that crap, I was definitely reporting them. Especially considering there were some elementary school kids nearby. I mean, come on—why was it that literal children behaved better than those idiots?
“Whoa, it’s already 8:30. That flew by.”
“Sorry for keeping you overtime. You can go ahead and clock out!”
“Thanks. You’ll be okay on your own?”
“Yeah, it’ll be quiet from here on out.”
“Alright. I’ll grab an anti-energy drink on my way out. Later!”
“Have a good night, Sato-kun!”
I scanned the anti-energy drink at the self-checkout, changed out of my uniform, and quickly left the store.
“…Phew.”
It’d been a day full of difficult customers.
As I drank the anti-energy drink, the quiet nightscape seemed to wash away the chaos of the day.
“—You’re the store clerk from earlier, aren’t you?”
“We’ve been waiting for you!”
A voice called out from the shadows of the convenience store’s parking lot.
Sitting there were the same two idiots from earlier.
“Why are you still here…?”
How annoying.
