- Chapter 14: Convenience Store Delinquent
Founder’s Day, a holiday reserved exclusively for students. One could spend it studying, reading, or maybe indulging in video games from morning till night.
“Phew.”
Meanwhile, I was cheerfully busy with my part-time job. There was something deeply gratifying about restocking shelves. It was the time when I felt the most fulfilled.
It was nice to learn about new products before anyone else. Also, though it was not really good, one could quickly buy items that would sell for many times the price if one were to resell them.
Of course, I’d never do that. I didn’t have any interest in it.
“The manager is always here. Do you ever take a break?”
“Y-yeah, I’m fine!”
“Well, that’s good then…”
It felt like she was always around when I was working. Of course, I met other people as well.
“I don’t have that many friends! No plans to go out!”
“Your eyes look dead…”
“Is work like a lover to you?”
“Well, love takes many forms, I guess (looking away).”
“S-so, Sato-kun, do you have a girlfriend or anything??”
“I don’t. I probably never will.”
I wished I could be an adult who could say that work was like a lover. Who knew what the future held.
At the very least, I enjoyed working. I got paid for the work I put in.
It might be obvious, but it made me happy.
“Sato-kun, you’re so cute…”
“…Haha, thank you.”
“Cute.” Despite it being the highest compliment in this world, it didn’t make me happy at all, and that meant romance might not be for me.
“There’s no one here, and the ashtrays seem to be filling up, so I’ll clean them out.”
“Oh no, I’ll do it! It smells awful.”
“No, no. I’ll take care of it this time.”
“Oh, okay then…”
There were a bunch of office workers hanging around earlier, so they were probably quite full. In this world, smoking regulations were still quite lax.
Of course, more women tended to smoke here—during lunch breaks, office workers, university groups, and a few grandmas too.
Men smoked as well, but they were in the minority.
“Wow, these are really full… gross.”
I put on disposable gloves and cleaned out the cigarette butts from the ashtray box. I wet them and put them in a bag.
The smell was intense. Being a guy, I had a slight longing for cigarettes… but this smell put me off.
There was probably some benefit, but I was not inclined to try it.
“Alright, done.”
Still, I cleaned them thoroughly. The inside and outside of the ashtray box, and the ash slot… I wiped everything down with a rag.
It was precisely because it got dirty that it was satisfying to clean it.
“—Huh?”
With cleaning done and all the trash thrown away—I noticed a customer heading toward the shadow of the parking lot.
Aimei Girls’ High School… the girls’ high school near us. It was often called ‘Aimei’. With her long brown hair flowing, she squatted down, spreading her legs.
Then she pulled it out from her pocket.
“…”
A lighter. You’re not actually doing that, are you?
With a decisive look, she pulled out a small box from another pocket—
“—Smoking underage in broad daylight?”
“!?”
“Stop it. I’m just telling you as part of my duty.”
“S-shut up.”
Skipping school, hanging around the back of a convenience store. A textbook example of a delinquent.
“Also, don’t smoke in your uniform. It’s like announcing you’re underage. If I report this to your school, you’re done for.”
“…Leave me alone.”
I offered gentle advice, but this was her attitude.
Ah, a classic delinquent move. This world’s girls’ schools were like the boys’ schools from the other world. They were full of people like her, andAimei’s industrial department was especially notorious.
This world seemed to have a lot of delinquents. Watching the customers at our convenience store, I got that vibe.
“I can’t stand kissing after someone just smoked.”
“Huh?”
“Guys are sensitive to that. It’s better if you just stop, don’t you think?”
“Wh-what are you talking about?”
“Just a passing convenience store worker doing his ‘duty’.”
“I don’t care… I’m not interested in guys.”
She looked away. The lighter and cigarettes were already back in her pocket.
“That’s a big lie.”
“What!?”
“You’re interesting.”
“Hey—talk like that again, and I’ll do you in!”
Oh, I’ll do you in!
I struggled to suppress a laugh. It was such a typical delinquent line.
“What’s your problem?”
At arm’s length, her face was right in front of mine.
“You haven’t even kissed anyone, have you?”
“!!!!!!”
Ah, she froze. Her face was turning beet red.
“…Wanna try? Hmm?”
“Go ahead.”
“!?”
“If you’re going to, do it quickly. I’m on the clock here.”
“Wha-what…”
“I’m counting, ten, nine, eight…”
Flustered, her face now fully flushed, and she struggled. This delinquent truly seemed quite the novice.
“One, zero. Time’s up.”
“…Ah…”
Despite a few false starts, she never took the step. I brushed her hand off my shoulder and left her shadow.
I couldn’t slack off any longer.
“See ya, get to school! Don’t smoke! Don’t read without buying! Oh, and don’t block the entrance to the convenience store! And… oh yeah, don’t pimp your bike, it looks ridiculous! It’s embarrassing to see!”
I said whatever I wanted to her silent figure as I headed back inside. I didn’t know if she heard me, but I bet she wouldn’t smoke anymore.
…Probably.
“Sorry, manager, I’m back.”
“S-Sato-kun, are you alright… wasn’t it smelly?”
“I’m fine. By the way, do you smoke, manager?”
“N-no… but I-I thought it might look cool…”
“Depends on the person, but I’d rather not smell it.”
“I won’t! I’ll never smoke!!”
“Haha, I like that about you, manager.”
“Alright… I think I’ll go clean the restroom now.”
Convenience store work was just getting started. I’d make everything shine!

Nah, the only “benefit” of smoking is just “looking cool”
It ain’t worth the lung cancer + you’ll end up smelling like shit.
