- Chapter 39: I Ended Up Dancing with Misfortune
In the end, Suberia and her classmates, who had been in last place before the cavalry battle, somehow managed to pull off a miracle. Thanks to the results of the inter-class cavalry match, they narrowly secured a 4th place finish.
“U-uwaaaaah!!!”
Right at the start, Nico disappeared, thrown off by the impact when the horseback riders collided.
Suberia and her team’s human horse formation, originally made up of four people, quickly transformed into an awkward three-person formation, with Shia in front, Ginny behind, and Suberia standing on top of their hands.
The three moved fluidly, as if they had anticipated Nico falling off, making the transition smoothly. The opening created during their position change was truly minimal.
However, their opponents targeted that tiny opening.
Three human horse formations from other classes moved toward Suberia’s team as if coordinating with each other.
Even though they were from different classes, they formed a single unit, persistently targeting Suberia’s team.
In terms of numbers, it was 3 versus 12.
A desperate situation facing four times their number.
Suberia’s team fought to the bitter end, going down together with the three horseback formations that attacked them.
They fought bravely until their headbands were snatched by other classes’ horseback teams that had joined the fray opportunistically.
Although she couldn’t achieve victory, Suberia deserved praise for snatching headbands from those who tried to overwhelm her with sheer force and bringing the match to a mutual defeat. Her valiant fight held great value.
Thanks to that, they avoided the worst scenario of finishing last place.
However, there was no joy on the faces of Suberia and her team.
Not a single one of them wore a bright expression.
(This might be rather problematic..)
The main event was the second half.
Nevertheless, Suberia lamented that they had suffered a major setback before it even began.
And she was burning with determination to make up for this blunder in the second half.
◇
“T-this is terrible, I say…”
“Terrible, indeed. What should we do about this…”
“That can’t be true. Why is this happening…”
“Hii… hii… even though I ran… so much…”
The second half of the sports festival had finally begun.
We, who had been fired up to make up for their loss in the earlier inter-class competition, were now holding our heads in dismay.
The second half event: “Hunting Race”
This competition, conducted in teams of four, involved entering a dungeon near the academy and hunting as many monsters as possible within the time limit. The team that brought back the most would win.
We had ventured forth confidently, carrying bags to hold the monster cores that would serve as proof of our kills, but…
‘W-why are there no monsters…?’
No matter how much we searched, there wasn’t a single monster to be found. Or more accurately,
There were no living monsters.
“…In this vast dungeon, we were unfortunately overlapping with other teams’ hunting grounds, I thought. We moved quite a lot, but even here, no luck…”
As we explored the dungeon, we did find monsters, though few in number. However, all of them were already dead, with the monster cores-the proof of defeating them-already removed.
This was likely the work of other teams.
The forest area of the dungeon where we currently were was inhabited by relatively weak monsters, making it ideal for racking up numbers.
That was why we had planned to score points here, but many other teams likely had the same idea.
Perhaps we couldn’t find any monsters because our hunting grounds overlapped with other teams.
Based on this speculation, we ran deeper into the dungeon where other teams might not have gone, but the result remained unchanged.
Again, we couldn’t find any living monsters. We only discovered dead ones.
At this point, We no longer understood the reason, nor could we determine what to do.
Perhaps it was time to ask the strategist…
“Ginny, what do you think we should do?”
“…I don’t know the reason, but there are no monsters in this area. At least, not in the direction we’re heading. If that’s the case, we have no choice but to try somewhere ‘other than the forest.'”
“That’s our only option, isn’t it…”
The dungeon at the academy is primarily composed of three areas.
The “Forest” with relatively weak monsters.
The “Cave” filled with more troublesome enemies than the forest.
The “Underground” where enemies become stronger the deeper you go.
First-year students who had just entered the academy typically only venture into the “Forest” due to combat strength considerations, though there’s no specific prohibition against going elsewhere.
It would be somewhat dangerous, but we had to do it.
“Which way should we go?”
“Ideally, the middle layer of the ‘Underground’ would be best, but we don’t have enough time to get there from here… We have no choice but to head to the ‘Cave,’ even if we risk having to forfeit…”
“…I understand, we have no other choice.”
If possible, we would have preferred to avoid the cave.
But in this situation, we couldn’t afford to be picky.
“Everyone, let’s go.”
I pulled along the silent Shia and the whimpering Nico as we headed toward the cave.
With an anxiety that was far more than just a tinge.
◇
“Then Ginny, I’m counting on you with Nico.”
“Yeah, I’ll protect Nico-kun. In return, I’m counting on you in the front line, Suberia, Shia. Try not to let any enemies get past you.”
Having run all the way to the cave entrance, We barely took a break before preparing to enter.
The front line would consist of me and Shia.
Originally, our party composition was one vanguard and three rear guards, but to reduce Nico’s risk of falling, we had no choice but to adjust.
If more than two cave monsters were to reach the rear guard, Nico might die.
Or at the very least, there was a high probability she would be incapacitated. After all, most monsters in the cave were “poison carriers.”
Among them, the particularly troublesome “Venom Bats” fly freely through the air, making them difficult targets.
As rear guards, it would be extremely challenging to shoot them down from a distance. The only option was to get closer and crush them with my magic before they could reach Nico.
If Nico, who likely couldn’t withstand poison, were to be hit, we would be forced to forfeit.
“A-are we really going to be okay!? Going into the cave, I’m not going to die, am I!?”
“Nico-kun, it’s alright. I’m your best friend, and I’ll protect you, so it’s okay, it’s okay. There’s nothing to worry about.”
“If you’re lying, I won’t forgive you, got it?! If I get hurt, I’m gonna hold a grudge, okay?! And if I die, I’ll curse your whole bloodline, you hear me?!”
Nico clung to Ginny, trembling violently.
Unusually, she was equipped with a bow today.
I had never seen her using a bow in training, so I wonder if Nico could actually use it.
Compared to Ginny, who was also equipped with a bow, Nico looked extremely unreliable.
(Friendly fire… no, that’s quite rude of me.)
Imagining the arrows she might fire made my spine chill slightly, but since Nico herself said, “I can use it, so it’s fine,” there shouldn’t be a problem.
Probably…
“Shia, let’s go.”
“Yeah, leave it to me…!”
Shia stared at the cave with fierce determination. I stood beside her as we approached the cave together.
Thanks to the faint sunlight penetrating the entrance area, we could see, but visibility didn’t extend to the depths.
(I hope there are just the right number of monsters…)
Wishing for a favorable situation, I created a ball of light with magic to illuminate the inside of the cave.
The white light spread throughout the cave.
It brightly illuminated the pitch-black darkness.
The fantastically blue interior of the cave gradually came into view.
It was larger and more spacious than I had heard about, and there, three “Wet Rats”-bloated poisonous rats about as tall as a person-gleamed white and slick as they glared at them.
(Three of them, that’s just right..)
With three, none should slip past them to the rear.
There were probably many more deep in the cave, but they showed no signs of coming out immediately.
Feeling relieved at finally encountering living monsters for the first time today, I let out a sigh.
Shia besides me seemed to feel the same way, showing a slight smile as she held her longsword directly in front of her.
“No, look up!!!”
That relaxed atmosphere was dispelled by Ginny’s piercing shout.
We suddenly looked up.
And then, we realized.
“N-no way, there can’t be…”
“Huh? No, that’s… Are all of those…?”
The blue glowing ceiling of the cave.
They realized it was writhing and squirming.
“Venom Bats! Here they come!!!”
