Chapter 5 Part 4 – My wife’s small request made me insanely happy

It was a Saturday afternoon.
The two of us were at the Ofuna shopping street to fulfill Riko’s request.
That day, I had asked Riko, ‘If I said, ‘I’ll do whatever you want,’ what would you want me to do?’ Riko’s answer to my question had been a fidgety one.
It was-
“I want to go on a date with Minato-kun in the shopping district.”
“… The shopping district?”
“Yeah, I want to buy some vegetables and meat…!”
“Oh, sure. That’s totally fine.”
“Really…?”
To be honest, I felt like I’d been let down. Riko called it a date, but it’s just a shopping trip, right?
I said, “I’ll do whatever you want”, but I didn’t expect to be asked to accompany her on a shopping trip…
… I guess you had nothing else to ask me for.
But then, why did she look so embarrassed?
Although Riko’s attitude remained a mystery, at least she didn’t dislike going shopping with me.
The Ofuna shopping street was located a single alleyway from the station. It was very lively today, normally a rarity, and the street was filled with people all the way to the end. However, most of the people on the street were older men and women. The youngest were housewives in their thirties, and there were no high school students in sight.
So even if me and Riko were together in this neighborhood, the chances of being spotted by our classmates would be zero. I’ve known about this shopping district for a long time, but I’ve never visited it directly.
“You can buy fresh vegetables and meat here.”
“I see.”
“And rare fish, too.”
“Oh! Nice!”
As we talked, we looked at the items on display. As Riko was choosing the ingredients, she would ask questions such as, “Do you want pot-au-feu or meat and potatoes?” and I would tell her what I wanted. [TN: pot-au-feu: french beef stew]
If this had been at a shopping mall, I would have been very nervous, and I don’t think I would have been able to give her a good opinion. But when it came to choosing ingredients, there was nothing to be nervous about. I think the simple atmosphere of the old-fashioned shopping street was also good.
I was able to get into conversations with Riko to an extent that I couldn’t believe it myself, and sometimes I would even offer my own opinions such as, “What do you think of this fish?” Riko praised the food I chose, saying, “Wow, I think it’s good!”
I was enjoying my time with Riko, and before I knew it, her eco-bags were filled to the brim.
“Riko, I’ll take that.”
“Thank you, but don’t worry. It’s not heavy, so don’t worry about it.”
“But then there’s no point in me coming along…”
“Just being next to you is meaningful, Minato-kun. I’m having a lot of fun thanks to you.”
“…….”
… She is saying cute things like that again, in a casual way.
I scratched my head in embarrassment and looked away.
As the eco-bag filled with vegetables came into view, I couldn’t help but feel that I couldn’t let Riko have it.
“Let me at least carry the bags, after all. I’ve always been taken care of by Riko.”
I told her and took the eco-bag from Riko’s hand. For a moment, our fingers touched, and some kind of heat rushed through my body.
I… touched Riko.
But, it wasn’t on purpose…!
I was about to walk away, making excuses that I wasn’t aware of what I had been doing, when-
“Wait…! Then let’s do this.”
“Huh? … Whoa!?”
Riko touched my hand, the one holding the bag, with both of hers. While I froze with a raised voice, Riko stole one of the handles of the eco-bag from my arms.
“We’ll hold it together like this.”
Riko smiled, her cheeks a little red with embarrassment.
“Let’s go.”
I could only nod back, feeling my face getting hotter and hotter.
The eco-bag swayed between us as if bridging the gap between us. The handle wasn’t very long, so it naturally brought us closer together than usual.
“Doesn’t it look like one of those.. commercials for dish detergent?”
Riko nodded her head happily when I asked her about it out of embarrassment.
“Isn’t that a happily married couple kind of commercial?”
“Yes, it is.”
“Oh! Um, I don’t mean that in a weird way, you know?”
“…Yeah, I know.”
We both blushed more and more because it seemed as if we were saying that we were a happy couple.
When Riko made that request, I wondered why she did it. But thanks to her, we had a very happy time.
The shopping district date was really great…
