Chapter 8 Let’s learn a little about this world
“It’s good that I can read it, but there are some parts that remain blank.
Could it be including words that don’t exist in Japanese?”
“Maybe they’re unique to this world… like place names?”
“They might not be expressible in Japanese due to unfamiliar pronunciation.”
I copied the original text of the sheepskin parchment and started writing the translation below it.
It seems to be describing directions.
And it seems they’re in need of medicine.
“It’s like a letter.”
The arrangement of the words is somewhat similar to Japanese sentences.
Perhaps that’s why it’s quite comprehensible.
Writing out each character, I counted thirty-two different characters.
More than the alphabet, but fewer than the fifty sounds of the Japanese syllabary.
Some words have more characters than their Japanese counterparts, while others have fewer.
“I see, combining two characters together creates a different sound.”
It might be similar to the voiced and semi-voiced sounds in Japanese.
In that case, it could be a phonetic script?
Ohh, writing characters is so enjoyable!
“Hey! What are you doing here!”
The sudden shout startled me so much that my heart leapt out of my chest.
…I can understand the words…?
Ah, it must be because I have the translation paper!
“Uh, sorry… I got lost in the woods, and I was about to be attacked by a wild animal… I ran around and finally ended up here.”
I’m not lying.
I’m just omitting a few details from my explanation.
It’s a good thing I tidied up the things I conjured for the experiment earlier…
Anyone in a room full of potato chip mountains would definitely seem suspicious.
“What, a lost wanderer? It’s dangerous for amateurs to enter this forest!”
“I really didn’t know, and I ended up getting lost… I don’t even know where this place is…”
“Where are you from?”
“…I think… you probably wouldn’t know… It’s a place called Japan…”
“Yeah, I’ve never heard of it.”
Yeah, I figured.
“Do you not know the way back?”
“Yes… I was wondering what to do and feeling lost…”
Oops.
I hadn’t really thought about going back.
Thinking about it, it’s kind of heartless to not have any attachment over there, considering I still have my Collection here.
“Hmm, aren’t you worried about your family?”
“No, I don’t have any family left… No relatives or anyone back in my hometown…”
“I guess I asked something not so great…”
What a kind person this is.
“No, it’s alright! Oh, by the way, I’m Takuto. Is this cabin yours?”
” Takuto, huh? I’m Gaihack. This used to be an old hunting cabin managed by the town.”
Gaihack has that unmistakable hunter vibe, but I wonder if he came here for hunting.
“As a matter of fact, I took down that creature right over there, but I messed up a bit.”
…The beast that lunged at me.
He managed to take it down.
Incredible…
There were scratches on his left arm and cheek, like it got a hold of him.
He must have gotten injured and was trying to treat it here.
An injury…
I’ve been using his cabin without permission…
“Um… Would it be okay if I took a look? If it’s not too severe, I might be able to heal it…”
“You can use healing magic!”
Ah, right, magic exists.
“Well, it’s not exactly ‘healing magic’ as you put it… but I’ll give it a try.”
“‘Completely heal the wounds of the person who touches this paper.'”
I wrote this on a small piece of paper and placed it on Gaihack’s wounds.
His cheek and left arm somehow healed.
Good, it doesn’t seem like they were too deep.
“How do you feel? Does it still hurt?”
“No… incredible. I’ve never seen a magic that heals so perfectly and quickly. Is this your first time using it?”
Oh.
It’s not something common, then…
