Chapter 5 Let’s try various things
The cabin’s door was locked with a key I’d never seen before in Japan from the outside.
The fact that the door was locked from the outside meant no one was inside… which was reassuring.
Though the key seemed sturdy and old-fashioned, it fell apart as soon as I pulled the door slightly.
It seemed quite old and corroded.
The door itself creaked, indicating it had been left unattended for quite a while.
Upon entering, I found a table and a chair, as well as a shelf with sliding doors.
I wiped only the table’s surface and the seat, tidying them up a bit.
I changed out of my soiled clothes and retrieved my backpack.
“Having a backpack or tote bag is really helpful…”
And then, I found an emergency kit bag within the “Bag” category.
“Right, everything was in the backpack, so it was categorized as a bag.”
What a relief!
There are medicines and even a lighter inside.
Well then, if I put them inside the bag, could I also stow away these dirty clothes?
It worked!
The bag category is indeed quite handy!
After disinfecting the scrapes and applying ointment, I felt a bit more at ease.
Taking a moment to calm down, I went through everything I currently had.
Everything inside the bag as well.
Within the bag I always carried were calligraphy materials: textbooks, examples, and oh, throat lozenges.
… My wallet and smartphone are… not here.
“Oh… I left them on the desk.”
Well, even if they were here, they wouldn’t serve any purpose in this otherworld, right?
Among the collection, there was a category labeled ‘Books,’ containing all sorts of books and dictionaries.
This truly delighted me.
In a world where digitization was rampant and e-books were the norm, this felt like a victory for my attachment to physical books.
Handwriting was on the decline, and digital writing tools could handle nearly everything.
Electronic characters that anyone could write beautifully, altering their size and color as they pleased, were undeniably convenient.
However, precisely because of that convenience, I wanted to hold onto the act of writing by hand.
Placing a dictionary beside me, I found joy in jotting down words one by one on paper with a pen.
There were times when I’d marvel at the elegance of the characters I created and times when I’d crumple the paper in frustration.
All of it was a record of my feelings and experiences in those moments.
I took out a notebook and decided to write with my favorite fountain pen.
I wonder how my handwriting looks now.
“… What should I… write?”
What characters do I want to write right now…
『K-ken Shumai Bento』
I’m being a bit sentimental, aren’t I?
But it’s my absolute favorite.
It used to be my weekly treat.
The shumai dumplings are amazing, but the simmered bamboo shoots are the best…
As I imagined the taste and appearance in my mind, I wrote the name of that beloved bento.
“You can write the names of things you love with such beautiful characters…”
Satisfied with the characters I wrote, I gazed at them… and then, a bento appeared before my eyes.
Why…?
What just happened?
Undoubtedly, it’s my cherished K-ken bento.
The wrapping paper, the string, even the wet towel and disposable chopsticks are included.
Of course, the contents are exactly what they should be… and it’s delicious.
Oh, I couldn’t help myself… I ate it without thinking.
Without a doubt, it was the bento I know so well.
Why did it appear?
Is there a connection with the characters I just wrote?
Looking at the paper’s characters, their color faded to a light gray.
From then on, I started writing like crazy. Of course, it was after I finished the bento.
It was convenient to have a variety of items in stock that I could quickly confirm, like potato chips.
I tried various things, like writing just the name, the manufacturer’s name and the name, or only the category.
I changed colors and even tried writing with pens other than my fountain pen.
And then, I more or less understood the conditions for their appearance.
Writing only “Potato Chips” → It produces chips with the same flavor as what I imagined.
Writing the “Correct Product Name” → Even if I imagined a different flavor, it produces the flavor I wrote.
Writing both the “Manufacturer’s Name and Correct Product Name” → It reliably produces that specific product.
The color or type of pen didn’t matter, but when I wrote in roman letters, nothing came out.
Probably because they were Japanese products with Japanese names.
When I wrote “Potato Chips” in English, something came out that wasn’t even in a bag.
It was likely a representation of potato chips as a dish, rather than a “product.”
Moreover, when I meticulously wrote the characters neatly, the quality of the items that appeared seemed higher compared to when I didn’t.
Even with scribbled writing, if the accurate product name was written, something would appear.
However, the taste and texture weren’t as good in those cases.
“This… requires more thorough testing!”
But with this, does it mean I’ve solved the issue of food shortage?
