The Confession.
[Miyu’s POV]
“I owe you an apology, grandmother.”
When I started out that way, Kazuya-kun’s grandmother didn’t say anything, but just urged me with a glance to encourage me to continue.
“It’s my fault Kazuya fell ill during winter break… And now I am staying with Kazuya-kun in his room…. Now I have a part-time job, but when we first started living together, I was just living in Kazuya-kun’s house because of his kindness… Because of this, Kazuya-kun increased his workload and…. your precious grandchildren because of me… I am truly sorry.”
I continued to bow my head as I sat on my seat. The reason why I wanted to go to Kazuya’s parents’ house. This is what I wanted to tell Kazuya’s grandmother. Kazuya-kun said it wasn’t my fault, but that was a lie because he was thinking of me. If I had not gone to Kazuya-kun’s house, he would not have fallen ill from exhaustion, and Kazuya-kun’s grandmother would not have been worried.
“Look up.”
“…Yes… Ehh?”
Kazuya’s grandmother was smiling. Kazuya’s grandmother had such a gentle face that I don’t think she has ever looked at me with such kind eyes in her entire life.
“I knew that without being told. I knew that Kazuya collapsed as a result of his recklessness for your sake. I didn’t think you were living together, though.”
“!?”
“He has always had a tendency to do it when he decides to do something. Even so, when he did something reckless, it was always for the sake of someone else. He always puts others before himself. That is his good point and his bad point.”
I can understand that. Since I started living with Kazuya-kun… No, Kazuya-kun has always put me first since the day he brought me home. As a result, he pushed himself to the point of collapse.
“So when Kazuya brought you to me, claiming you were his girlfriend, I knew immediately. I knew that he did something reckless for you.”
“That’s why, it’s my fault.”
“Will you stop with that?”
“!?”
“You may think less of yourself, but didn’t that boy work hard for you? If that’s the case with the boy who worked so hard for you, don’t you feel like an idiot? To him, you were worth working until he collapsed. That’s how much he valued you, wasn’t it?”
I had nothing to say… I couldn’t believe that by despising myself, I was despising Kazuya-kun at the same time… Kazuya had never looked down on me or said anything like that. He never pitied me for being abandoned by my parents, and he sincerely thought about me. He was really angry with me for my sake, as if I was talking to him for the first time. And yet I…
“You seem to get it, don’t you?”
“…Yes.”
“And you’re not as worthless as you think you are, okay?”
“…What makes you say that?”
“I don’t know what happened to you, but he tried to save your life until he collapsed. It’s no small thing. You’re alive and strong now, despite what happened to you.”
“But… I was seriously trying to die at the time…”
If I had not met Kazuya, I certainly would not be alive today. There was a good chance that I would have committed suicide. The reason I am here today is all thanks to Kazuya-kun.
“Even so, you are alive now, aren’t you?””
“It’s …It’s all thanks to Kazuya-kun…”
“It’s true that that boy may have been your support. But, you know, it was you who chose to live, right?”
“!?”
“You could have chosen to die with or without him. If you really wanted to die, you could have died. Dying is the only real freedom given to human beings. But you didn’t do it. That means you overcame yourself, and I think that’s something to be proud of.”
I could no longer stop the tears from welling up in my eyes. I was just saved by Kazuya-kun. I had done nothing, and I truly thought I was worthless. But he told me that I was wrong. They even said I should be proud of myself. I felt as if I myself had been saved, even though it was just this one thing.
“And you know what? I was happy. I was happy that you really liked that boy. That you confided everything honestly to me. It is because of you that I can entrust him to you. That child is reckless and easily gets into trouble, no matter what he does. So, I want you to support him.”
Then Kazuya’s grandmother bowed her head to me. Oh… I guess she really cares about Kazuya-kun… I can’t believe that she would bow down to me when I am only a young child in front of her…
“You can rest assured. I promise I won’t let you worry again.”
When I said this, my grandmother looked at me with a satisfied smile.
“Thank you.”
“No, no, no.”
“Now I can die anytime I want.”
“S-such thing.”
“I’m just kidding. I won’t be able to die until I see Kazuya and you get married.”
“Ma-Married?!”
Marriage with Kazuya-kun… No, just thinking about it makes my cheeks naturally relax… And my face is turning so hot….
“By the looks of it, it may not be too long before I see your great-grandchildren’s faces…”
I couldn’t look at my grandmother’s face any longer.
