Chapter 5

Haru’s POV

Me and Maki got into different public high schools.

When she got her new uniform, she immediately put them on and came to show them to me, who was helping out at the store.

My mom looked really happy and said,

‘Maki-chan, you are so cute! You’re going to have a hard time dealing with the boys at your school. You are going to be very popular.’

She said so excitedly.

Even my father who was not talkative at work, the moment he saw Maki in her uniform, his eyes lit up.

‘Haru-kun, what do you think?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Does it suit me?’

‘Yeah.’

I was really happy when I saw how cute and beautiful Maki was in her uniform, but I couldn’t say anything more than ‘yeah’ because my family was there.

Both Maki and I rode bicycles to school.

The high school I went to is about thirty minutes away from home, whereas Maki’s high school is about fifteen minutes away from her house.

Maki told me that she wanted to go to school in the morning together with me, so we immediately started to ride our bicycles to school side by side the day after the entrance ceremony.

When Maki entered high school, she said that she wanted to grow her hair, Maki’s hair was shoulder-length in middle school. Since maki entered high school, she tied her hair up in a ponytail more often.

‘There are a lot of interesting people in my school. I made friends right away.’

Maki happily told me so.

For me, an academic achievement test was held on the day after the entrance ceremony. I managed to get into the top thirty in my grade. I didn’t feel particularly excited because of the atmosphere at my school.

Everyone in my class seemed to prioritize studying more than anything else. I did talk with some friends who sat beside me, but the conversation never last.

My parents started to pay me hourly to help at the store, but since I had nothing I wanted to buy, I just put it all into my savings.

At Golden Week, Maki started to work part-time at our store around 3-4 times a week.

She said she wanted to buy a smartphone.

Maki knew everything about the restaurant menu because she often helped us out before, therefore she was already familiar with the restaurant right after she started working.

During the first semester, I was struggling to adjust from middle school studies to high school studies, helping out at the store was like a break from it all.

I often met up with Maki after school on the days when our restaurant was closed, we would hang out together. On weekends, we always spent time together eating dinner together after her night shift. By the time summer break arrived, I was finally able to kiss Maki without feeling nervous.

As soon as the summer break began, Maki bought herself a smartphone with her hard-earned money.

I also bought the same model as hers.

Since I didn’t have anyone close enough at school to exchange contact information with, my phone was mostly used just to call and message Maki.

On the other hand, Maki’s high school friends had given Maki their contact information, she was so excited of her new phone that she immediately sent messages to her friends.

My summer break was full of studying and part-time work at the restaurant.

Maki also worked part-time almost every day during the holidays.

Therefore, whenever the restaurant is closed, me and Maki would always go out and have a date.

One day, in late August.

That day, I was scheduled to work the afternoon shift and Maki was scheduled to work the evening shift.

When I was studying in my room with the air conditioner on at around 10:00AM Maki came over.

It was unusual for Maki to come visit me in the morning, especially on a day when I had a part-time job at the restaurant. I thought she just might have something to do or something do discuss with me, so I stopped studying and prepared cold barley tea for the two of us and listened to what she had to say.

‘It’s unusual for you to come here in the morning, Maki. What brings you here?’

‘Yeah, I guess so…’

Maki was not acting as usual.

‘Is there something you want to discuss with me?’

‘Hmm…’

I felt frustrated, so I pushed her a little.

‘If you don’t have anything to do with me, I’ll go back to studying then. I have to work part-time today in the afternoon, this is the only time I can study.’

‘Ah! Wait…umm.’

Maki timidly placed a small box in front of me.

It was a box of condom.

On that day, we closed the curtains and turned off the lights. When we took off our clothes, we felt so embarrassed that we covered our private parts with our hands. When we finally tried to start, we were so nervous that we couldn’t do it, no matter how many times we tried to do it, we just couldn’t. We gave up on doing it just before noon.

‘I’m sorry, I’m really bad at this.’

‘No, that’s not true at all. I was the one who stopped you because it was too painful. Can we try it again tomorrow?’

‘Yeah, sure.’

That night, before I went to bed, I did some research on my phone.
