Chapter 20

Maki’s POV

I stopped going to school the next day.

I turned off my phone, locked myself in my room all day and never went outside.

Because I couldn’t pay my own phone bill, my mom had to pay it for me. My smartphone no longer had any meaning to me since I no longer get any calls and messages from Haru-kun.

Sometimes, I just wished that I had done it earlier, but it was too late, there was nothing I could do. I just didn’t want to think about anything anymore.

My mom didn’t get angry at all, she just asked what happened. But I just told her that I didn’t want to go to school anymore, and she didn’t ask me anymore questions.

Around mid-November, I started to feel nauseous that I had to run to the kitchen sink several times a day. It didn’t stop even when my mom was home at night, she noticed that I often throw up and asked me about it.

‘Maki, are you pregnant?’

‘I don’t know…’

‘Have you checked it?’

‘I haven’t left my room in forever.’

‘Okay. I’ll go to the local drugstore and get you a test kit.’

Saying so, mom went out without changing her clothes and came back immediately.

Mom showed me how to use it, then I went to the bathroom and tested it. A short while later, it tested positive.

After confirming the result, Mom immediately left the room and came back with Natsumi-san.

After confirming that I tested positive, Natsumi-san ran out of the room.

Meanwhile, mom seemed to be thinking about what should we do about the situation. She had a distressed expression on her face as she held her head with her hands.

After thirty of forty minutes later, Natsumi-san finally came back.

When Natsumi-san returned, she got down on her knees in front of me and asked,

‘Who is the father of this child?’

Hearing so, mom asked,

‘What do you mean? It must be Haru-kun’s child, right?’

‘No, I asked Haru just now and he denied that it is his child. Even when I shouted at him, hit him,  and accused him of lying, he kept denying it is his child. When I asked Haru about it, he said the last time he had sex with Maki was in July, and he had always used contraception even before that. Eventually, Haru told me that Maki-chan is already dating another guy, Haru said he broke up with Maki-chan last month because Maki-chan was cheating on him, Maki-chan dumped him. Haru seems to know the name of this child’s father, but he won’t tell me. He said that if Maki-chan doesn’t want to tell who the father of this child is, then we won’t either.’

I knew it, Haru-kun had found out all along.

I can’t imagine how much it hurt Haru-kun when he found out about it. I fell on the floor, crying, and sobbing out loud with great sadness and regret.

‘I’m sorry, Haru-kun. I’m really sorry.’

I screamed over and over again as I cried.

On that day, neither mom or Natsumi-san tried to talk to me anymore.

I don’t know how long I cried that night, eventually I cried myself to sleep that night.

When I woke up in the morning, my mom took a day off work and brought me to the hospital.

I was diagnosed as eight weeks pregnant.

When I return to my apartment, my mom told me to lay down and rest on the bed.

Not long after, Natsumi-san came over. Mom and her began to discuss about what to do.

Both of them agreed that there was no other way but to get an abortion.

They asked me who the father of that child again, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell them. I was too afraid that they would find out what I have done. Both my mom and Natsumi-san despise me for it.

Around noon, Natsumi-san went back to the restaurant because he had to work.

My mom was there for me, but she looked distressed the whole time.

Around 2PM Haru-kun’s grandmother came to visit.

She kept patting my head with a gentle smile on her face.

I couldn’t stop crying, I kept wiping my tears with my hands as she was stroking my head.

‘Don’t worry Maki-chan, it will be fine. We are all on your side no matter what. You have to decide whether you want to keep the baby or not, but no matter what your decision is, we are all here to help you.’

‘Grandma…’

I told Haru-kun’s grandma and mom everything that happened.

After I told them what happened, Mom left the room. A short while later, she came back with Natsumi-san and Haru-kun’s grandfather.
