- Chapter 3 - It's Such a Hassle to Explain Reincarnation as a Non-Otaku Character
“Listen, Maika. Let’s sort out the situation first.”
“No. I don’t want to sort things out. Instead of that, let me feel your triceps’ long head, it’s been so long.”
Maika was rubbing her cheek against her brother’s upper arm, avoiding reality. Her brother, thinking about how soft and smooth her cheeks still felt just like old times, sat with her in a secluded spot away from the crowd.
That is to say, there were crowds elsewhere, meaning people were everywhere—wearing school uniforms, gym clothes, and club uniforms. Basically, it was a school. No, more like an academy, a very academy-like place.
We found ourselves on the grounds of an unknown academy, beside a building unmistakably labeled “Club Rooms.”
We were now sitting behind that club building. From all around, the voices of sports teams and the sounds of balls being hit could be heard. It felt nostalgically atmospheric.
It seemed that today was the last day of spring break at this academy. The sports teams were apparently already joined by new freshmen for practice. I overheard some female students discussing it, so it was confirmed.
…In a way, the world seemed to be explaining the situation to us without us even asking.
Hmm, this is…
“Wow, Kyugo’s arm. The lateral head is so rugged. I love the smell of Kyugo.”
“Sister, you really need to regain your sanity soon, or you’ll definitely regret it.”
“It’s fine. Since it’s just a dream, I’ll enjoy it as much as I can before I wake up. It’s always like this in my dreams.”
“Alright, I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that. Just move away for now.”
His sister, whose eyes were starting to glaze over, was gently peeled off him as he turned to face her again.
“Maika, this is, well, the game I was playing back in that room.”
“So it’s a dream, after all. See? We can snuggle and kiss all lovey-dovey since it’s a dream. No problem at all since I’m the law here. The civil code. A god.”
“We should probably discard that assumption for now. I don’t want to tarnish the dignity of my real sister any further.”
“Well, usually in my dreams, you’d be the one kissing and hugging me more, so… what? A game? What?”
I’m not sure if this is really okay, but at least Maika is showing some willingness to listen. I continued explaining, partly to sort out my own thoughts.
“You saw that the characters in the game had the same names as us, right? When we bumped into the screen, our souls, or rather, our entire appearances, ended up transferring into characters that share our names.”
Well, originally, the characters did somewhat resemble us.
“What kind of idea is that… Even if you need to force some explanation onto this inexplicable situation, why such a far-fetched idea? Where did that even come from?”
“Uh, well, you wouldn’t know since you’re not familiar with anime, light novels, or games, but it’s a common plot in otaku content. Like reincarnating into a game or possessing a game character. That’s where the idea came from.”
“Hmm… but you were always into baseball and didn’t really get into manga. Even games, you only played them to keep that kid company. What’s up with you lately?”
Well, I mean, after dying, I wanted to know what happens next, and none of the religions made sense, so I ended up getting into reincarnation stories. NTR stuff is a different matter.
“Well, never mind that. For now, let’s assume we’re possessing game characters. Look at this.”
I showed Maika the four characters written on the underside of the cap I was wearing with a permanent marker.
“『Yamada Kyugo』…? Yamada? What?”
“That’s the surname of this character. It’s different from ours, right?”
“Yeah. Well…”
Her eyes widened slightly, but she still wasn’t fully catching on.
Well, no helping it. It’ll take some time to convince her.
“Check your own stuff, too. See if there’s a smartphone or maybe a wallet in your pocket or something.”
