TN: Last part for chapter 1. Yay! Let’s go~
The remaining man abandoned his friends and tried to escape. But he couldn’t get out of the alley.
Sheena sat on top of him and drew her bow.
Yes, a bow. It was a bow and arrow made of wood. It seemed to have appeared out of thin air. She pulled the string and shot, not even needing to take time to aim. The arrow pierced the man’s leg as he tried to flee, causing him to scream and fall. The color of the arrow blended in with the dark alley at night, but the smell of fresh blood was hard to hide.
“You know what, I’ve already decided to get my money’s worth from you guys. You will not get away with this.”
“It’s real”, I thought, shuddering.
Up until now, everything had felt surreal and dream-like, but now I finally woke up to reality.
Disappointment? Ridiculous. She was exactly who I wished she was.
Ruthless.
She was unfettered and lived purely by her own creed.
That much was certain to me now.
There she was without a doubt.
The one that I am fascinated by, the one that is “out of harmony” with the world…
A Dark Elf.
“Well, we can finally talk calmly. In the meantime, give me something from… the stuff you just bought.”
Sheena smiled as she looked at the convenience store bag that I was still holding with a tight grip.
While sucking on a lollipop, she played with the men until they fainted. The sound of muffled moans and groans disappeared from the alleyway.
“What’s with that bow?”
“This bow? The god had provided me with basic equipment. I can take it out and put it away like this. I’m a dark elf so naturally, I’ll need a bow and arrow. By the way, I didn’t shoot this guy in any vital areas, so you don’t need to stop him from bleeding to death… Are you relieved?”
“Honestly, yes.”
“Hee-hee, you’re honest. That’s the norm in this world. What a peaceful loving world. Over in our world, whenever there was a dispute, one of us would end up dead.”
“If you understand that common sense, you’ll know that this situation is generally quite violent. What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to extract magic power.”
Another fantasy term, I thought to myself.
“Magic power?”
“There are many terms for it, but magic power is the easiest way to describe it in your language. In our world, there are many ways to say it. Spirits, ethereal, darkness… This much is basic knowledge.”
Sheena squatted down beside the men, twisting the lollipop before popping it out of her mouth.
“Well, it’s equivalent to a human’s life force, I guess. Magic powers are meals for magicians like me. Ah, magicians are the ones who can use their magic power to perform magic.”
“You mean dark elves are one of them?”
“Yes, and there are many others. Each species has its own unique magic, with different methods and uses. You can’t use the magic of another species no matter what, though I don’t know the reason why.”
A smooth brown hand stretched out from her rolled-up shirt sleeve. Her bare skin and the contours of her fingers were lustrous and somehow appeared mysterious. I couldn’t help but admire this picturesque image despite the situation.
She held her palm before the face of the fallen man, stopping just short of touching his forehead.
“Like this, I can replenish my magic even if I’m in another world. Well, here I go.”
There was a faint white light. It flowed from the men to Sheena’s palm and was then absorbed.
This is the second fantasy-like thing that she had done other than producing a bow and arrow from thin air.
There was no longer any room for doubts. There was no choice but to accept that she was a being from another world.
When the light stopped coming from the first person, the second and third people followed.
“With this, you can now use magic… right?”
“No. After being reincarnated here, changes have been made to our body. There are numerous preparations and procedures that need to be done in order to use magic.”.
I seemed to have seen Sheena giving me a wink. But when I tried to look back at her face, she had already gotten up from her knees.
U-n, she stretched like a cat. Her ears were perked up adorably along with her movements.
“After all, the reason why we need magic power is because we are not from this world. We need it in order to exist here. It’s just like when your stomach starts to grow hungry on its own. So regardless of the magic, we need to replenish it regularly…”
Sheena said this and poked the bodies of the men with the sole of her shoes.
“Not everyone possesses the kind of magical power that can feed us. The life force that humans normally have is too thin for us. It has no taste, no nutrition. Only people like them have the solid, dense, nutritious, and delicious magic power.”
“I don’t think these guys were special in any way. What’s the distinction? Was it because they’re young?”
“Well, simply put… they’re bad people, aren’t they?”
Shiina laughed mockingly as she said this.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“I don’t know about the theory behind it. Even if there is one, I wouldn’t bother to analyze it.”
I’m not sure what to say, but I think I understood what she meant. From what Sheena said, magic is equivalent to life force.
It was usually the bad guys, not the good guys, who lived happily and they pleased. People who trampled on others, disregard others’ feelings and ignored the consequences of committing crimes. If you asked me whether it was the good people or the bad people who are strong and dense with life force, you’ll probably know which was the answer.
As I was thinking about this, Sheena stood right in front of me.
“And that’s not all. There are some guys who have a huge amount of magic power, such as other magical species in the same position as me. For example, dragons, witches, elves, dwarves, vampires, orcs, lizardmen, faeries, and many other species. I don’t know who they are exactly, but someone who represents each race had been reincarnated into this world like me.”
Her eyes never left mine while saying this as if she was amused or as if trying to determine something about me.
“In fact, magical species scramble for the magic power from the representative of other species. Eventually, all the species’ magic power will be gathered by one person—that’s what we’re here for.”
My throat felt dry again. I swallowed my saliva, forcing it to moisten my throat before speaking.
“What happens when all of that becomes one…?”
Sheena said, her canine teeth glinting
“The winning tribe of the new world will be given a second chance. In other words, God will give the race a chance to live even after their world has been destroyed. The race standing last will gain the right to flourish in the next world.”
This is like how poisonous creatures were placed into one jar, and the last one to survive is used as a curse or poison.
The representatives of the magical species that had been reincarnated into this world orld were the poisonous creatures.
In the 21st century, in this scientific world, where magic, witchcraft, and the unknown have become mere notions of fantasies, it had become a jar in which they would kill each other.
“────”
I suddenly felt dizzy, the colors around me seemed to be morphing..
I thought I was in a birdcage where everything was white, inorganic, tasteless, and was molded by an intangible pressure, but then I realized all I could see was black. But I, who was almost blinded by the whiteness of the world, saw it as the color of salvation, no matter what.
However, I still had to ask one more thing.
“Why tell me all of this… just because I bought you a drink from the convenience store?”
“Ara~, didn’t I tell you?”
She moved her ears in an exaggerated manner and looked at my puzzled expression.
“In order for us to be able to demonstrate our full potential in this world, we need to have a medium that is deeply rooted in this side of the world. A local collaborator or partner, is what you call it?”
The look on her face was all that mattered to me.
It was as if she was enjoying herself as she watched the result of a bad joke.
There was not a shred of guilt, not a trace of evil, just a one-sided pleasure…
A smile like that of an evil fairy, a dark elf.
“Actually, I’ve already chosen you as my partner. So I’ll be in trouble if you don’t help me.”
I answered immediately afterwards.
“All right. Let me help you.”
Sheena blinked her eyes in disbelief at the speed of my reply.
For some reason, I felt proud that she looked like that.
Sheena’s lips curved into a wry smile as she regained her composure.
“You’re really funny, you know that? I was right about you. But let me ask you this one question. Why?”
“You know my reason. I told you before, it never changed.”
I looked at her intensely because I didn’t want her to think I was lying or joking.
The brown-skinned savior who had come from a world that was already destroyed.
“Because I like you.”
The combo of my straight face and blunt words seemed to have dealt her a fatal blow.
She reacted exactly as she had when I said the same line before.
“Puha… ha-ha-ha-ha! That! That again!? Hahahaha!”
Shiina burst out laughing, holding her belly.
I expected this kind of reaction. Of course, what I “like” was her existence, it wasn’t the romantic love between a man and a woman. However, it still made me feel a bit nervous. When a frown formed on my face, her shoulders shook even more, as if my face had touched some triggered something in her.
“Fufu, kukuku. It’s really funny. You’re a really funny and weird guy, huh, Rensuke?”
“If anything, I’m more of an honor student at school.”
“Hee hee, stop lying.”
That’s right, a lie. In school, Asakura Rensuke was just a lie.
“All right! Then I would like to give some kind of reward to my partner-kun for smoothly accepting my request for cooperation. …Hmm, what to do? This is the only thing I can think of right now.”
When Sheena finally finished laughing, she bent her body slightly and put her face close to mine. She held that stick of the lollipop she had been eating and pulled the candy out of her mouth.
It was much smaller than it initially was.
“For the time being, how about this?”
She looked at my face from up close and offered me the candy.
She had a look of challenge and fascination, as if to test my reaction.
It may have just been a ritual of confirmation and contract, typical of her usual mischief on others, but…
Even it was.
I didn’t hesitate at all to accept her taste.
