Is There An Answer To This Case? (Part 3)

After I regained my composure, I accompanied her around the campus. My face was well-known in school. A boy and a tanned girl wearing what looked like a uniform from a different school walking together attracted so much attention as if it was some kind of event, but I ignored all the stares. On the contrary, it would be less awkward if I kept my head held high. I firmly convinced myself with a strong will.
A corridor lined with classrooms. I observe the students studying on their own, taking care not to disturb them in any way.
“What are they studying?”
“Various things. They’re studying math, English, RV piloting skills, etc.”
“Ahaha, I don’t understand. Compare it to our world.”
“Calculations methods to help account for money, languages of other countries, and skills for riding horses to defeat enemies.” (TN: Yep, it’s horse analogy probably referring to RV)”
“You’re learning all these useful things for the sake of one’s advantages. All of them are necessary survival skills.”
Sheena said with a straight face.
Various messages were posted on the student bulletin board. A small club was looking for members, newspaper club deliverables, a posting for adopting a kitten. Sheena looked at them one by one with great interest.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking, but can you read?”
“Over there, only to a certain extent. Here… I have to thank God. I know how to read and write since it was implanted in my head.”
“Well, that’s a relief.”
“It’s like a guild forum, you know? Though I only know of a dark guild. However, there’s no postings about avenging enemies or assassination requests and all of the content is very unimportant, isn’t it?”
“It would be a disaster if there were assassination requests on the school’s bulletin board. I guess it’s not important to everyone. There are people who put their lives on the line for club activities.”
“It’s like a hobby group, huh. Only when you have ample amount of free time can you do such things. It’s safe to say that it’s for the wealthy.”
There was a touch of dismay and mockery in her words. But there was something in the corner of her eyes─ it felt like she was looking at an unreachable sunset.
“Ooh~. However, this is rather guild-like. 『Need help in moving all the equipment from the first warehouse in the gym to the second warehouse at once』. The work of carrying the goods is rather rewarding, isn’t it? How much will I get for this?”
“It’s a volunteer job for those who are in the club and have to use the gym. They don’t get paid. In other words, they work for free.”
“That’s a shitty request.”
Sheena frowned in disgust and spat in resignation. When she found out that the client was a teacher, a public authority, she asked why no one had attacked these people to teach them a lesson.
We went around to various places. In the library, she licked her lips and said, “This reminds me of the time I snuck into an aristocrat’s mansion.” At the school store in the cafeteria, she said “Is that thing here?”, asking for the tapioca milk tea. Sadly, the school didn’t sell it. On the rooftop, she was enjoying the cool breeze blowing through her hair.
Leaving the school building, we took a tour of the school premises. Bicycle parking lot, gymnasium, courtyard… and the sports being played by the club activities. Sheena was very intrigued by those things. She boldly jumped into a baseball practice and swung the bat happily at the batter’s box producing a pleasant sound. I watched her with a blank stare, but I was able to stop her from breaking into the soccer team. Her skirt was quite dangerous when she was batting. Even if she didn’t care, I did.
Although she cannot participate, the one she was most interested in was the RV related activities. The handball-like game played using RVs was being held in one corner of the practice field. It was a motor sport called “Knight’s Ball”. It was invented as a form of training, but recently it had been gaining popularity because it is an easy way to compete, like a prefectural judo tournament. It wasn’t something that would create a professional stage on its own, though.
We could only watch from a distance for safety reasons, but it still seemed to be enough for Sheena.
“Oh, the Steel Knight I saw on TV. It can move surprisingly fast.”
“Thanks to EF energy and new armor materials, the weight has been greatly reduced… Do you need an explanation of how the center of gravity control program works?”
“I don’t want something that’s too difficult to understand. However, the Black Bear Knights that I talked to before, the iron armor was kneaded with magic power with a secret recipe from the Kingdom of Zachd, and because of it, they moved much faster than they looked. Is the logic similar?”
“That, I don’t know.”
“If they’re that big and can move that fast, they might be more troublesome than the Black Bear Knights. It depends on the level of skill and weaponry, but it might be able to take down a Manticore in the forest in a single maneuver. …When I saw it on TV though, I thought it was a holding a weapon, and not a ball?”
“Because this is a sport. They’ll use all kinds of weapons when they’re subduing the Radiant Beasts. It can be done with an axe or a spear. ”
“It’s just like the Knights. Ah, I get it, that ball game is like a spectacle contest with a crushed sword, right?”
“Yeah… I guess. Anyway, it’s not just a game, it’s also part training.”
“However, if you try hard, you’ll be rewarded, right? That’s right, I understand. Surprisingly, it’s no different in this world.”
Overall, she seemed to be having fun. It reminded me of the words I heard when she first introduced herself: 『My favorite thing to do is to have fun』. Even in this short relationship, I could see that this was not a lie. She was not afraid to approach as long as it was fun, and will do her best to enjoy what interested her. The brilliance of her expression when she does that was something that made me want to take a picture of her.
But─that was why.
As a result, it made her stood out even more.
Maybe we were showing up in too many places on campus, some students came all the way from other places to see Sheena, making it difficult for us to move. When the newspaper club arrived, we decided to hide ourselves for a while.
After running as fast as we could and losing our pursuers, we arrived at the back of the school building where there was no sign of people. Tall plants lined the street as a sort of fence, and some trees were planted between them and the school building.
Inhaling the smell of the greenery, I took a deep breath to catch my breath. It was probably because of the treeman’s natural constitution that I don’t feel that I’m losing much energy, but as expected, if I suddenly dash, I’ll lose my breath.
Sheena was also wiping sweat off the back of her hand and fanning at her chest. I unconsciously noticed her brown bulge without even trying to look at it, and tried to avert my gaze, but then her hand stopped moving. In that moment, what followed was a shock, but the following words that followed were not a condemnation of my gaze.
“Ah, someone’s still coming. This is a little annoying.”
After lightly passing her gaze over her head, Sheena said to me.
“I’m going to be hiding above for a while. If Rensuke’s alone, you can fool whoever it is, right? Just play it cool.”
Above? As I thought this, Sheena was moving flexible as a cat, and with her hands on the nearby tree, she climbed up easily. Of course, her underwear and other things were in full view, but like her bosom earlier, Sheena didn’t care. She waved to me lightly as if to say, ‘Take care of it’. Then, Sheena quickly hid herself in the thick leaves at the top of the tree.
Around that time, I noticed small footsteps approaching. I wasn’t sure why anyone would come to a place like this without a purpose. A dark elf and her partner chased by onlookers, or the paparazzi chasing them, were the only two possible choices.
“Huh? Class President…?”
“…”
It was Yuika Biwatani who showed up. She was wearing the same school uniform as the last time I saw her in the classroom.
I think this was the first time we had made direct eye contact with each other today. Normally when we made eye contact, she always seemed to be glaring at me. But not at this moment. She was just looking at me with a blank expression, like she was looking at a boring math problem.
Trying hard not to think about what’s above, I responded with my fake smile.
“Uhm, can I help you?”
And her reply was a short sigh.
“For causing such a commotion, you’re certainly carefree. And not only in the classroom, but also in the whole school. I didn’t think Asakura-kun was that stupid.”
Her blank expression did not change. Her voice was quiet and cold.
“There’s various circumstances and I don’t have excuses to give in return. So, did the class president come all this way…just to complain?”
“Yes, as the class president, I do want to complain. It’s not just her, but you yourself is a reason for the strange atmosphere in the classroom today.”
“I heard from the others. They said you look different from usual. I don’t feel that way at all, but I’m curious why.”
一I took a breather.
I wanted to keep my calm and emotional state.
With her eyes fixed on me─
I answered the question.
“I think you’ve become a terrible liar.”
“…!”
My heart, not knowing if I had one or not, jumped.
“You didn’t think I’d notice? At least I did. All along.”
