Chapter 93 338 Lapua Magnum
Oh, when I bought this, I got scolded by Saran!
“you buy something like that, Shin will end up getting involved in even more unnecessary stuff!!”
Just as Saran predicted.
The Magic Bag has become quite versatile as well.
Of course, going up against a Tyrannosaurus with an H&H Magnum would be a bit of a stretch, so when I asked for the “most powerful ammunition for the Remington M700,” the bullets that came out were .338 Lapua Magnum rounds.
It’s like the Magic Bag acts like a dragon from somewhere, willing to help out if you ask nicely.
These bullets aren’t rounded at the tip; they have a pointed full metal jacket. In other words, they’re precision sniper rounds meant for accurate shooting, not just brute force.
And yet, the overall length and thickness of the cartridge are even larger than the .375 H&H Magnum!
The caliber is .338, which is 8.58mm, slightly smaller, but the power is incredible.
With 4900 ft·lbs of force, it’s more potent than the H&H Magnum.
How can it achieve such power with this caliber? Look at it, it’s exceeding 900 meters per second in velocity.
The ammunition package came with an explanation that surprised me. The ballistic chart is written up to 1200 yards. That means it hits targets over a kilometer away! A pack of 20 rounds costs $80, so $4 per shot!
So, without hesitation, I went ahead and bought a rifle to use this.
There’s no other option but to buy it, right?
Remington Model 700 XCR .338 Lapua Magnum.
Detachable magazine, capacity of 5 rounds. It cost 15 gold coins.
It already has a massive muzzle brake on the barrel, looking quite powerful.
And then, with a full commitment, I also splurged on a top-of-the-line scope.
March X, 56mm objective, 8-80x magnification!
Manufactured by Nagano Dion Optical Technology.
This Japanese-made scope is reigning as the champion in the world of benchrest shooting, used by top shooters worldwide!
Well, when you’re aiming at targets 1 km away, you really need this level of magnification. I might have gone a bit overboard…
Now, up until this point, what do you think was the most expensive?
The scope, no doubt!
It costs a whopping 32 gold coins! That’s 320,000 yen!
“You won’t hit anything if you don’t buy a scope more expensive than the rifle,” said my senior from the hunting association. I followed his advice.
Quietly, without letting Saran know, I got everything ready. Deep in the remote mountains of the Elven village, I was firing away, and believe it or not, I hit targets 1 km away for real.
The bullet spread at 1 km was within 30 cm.
I can group shots accurately on both humans and deer. It’s truly astonishing.
“SHIIIIIIIIINNNNNN!!”
Oh boy, Saran’s face when she turned around at that moment was nothing short of terrifying. It was the scariest moment since we got married. She threw the lunch she had brought with her at me.
“How on earth did you find out about this place?”
“Well, it’s not like you can make those huge bangs ‘dokan-dokan’ without anyone noticing! The whole village could hear it, and the children were crying!”
Ugh…
“Listen, Shin… Money isn’t the problem. Whatever you do with it, whatever you buy, it’s fine. Because, Shin, I know you’re working hard to earn money and you’re not hesitating to spend it for the villagers. But, please, don’t engage in more dangerous things with the new gun. Please stop. If you get involved in something, you might die easily. If you incur someone’s grudge, you could be killed effortlessly. I would be left alone. I can’t bear it. So, please stop.”
Seeing Saran cry, and even bowing down to her, those were both firsts for me. I can’t win against Saran.
But it was with the Lapua Magnum that the moment of truth eventually arrived…
“I saw it yesterday, but it’s still amazing,” Blan said, quite astonished.
Even at the U.S. price, the total set cost about 700,000 yen.
I placed the rifle on the machine rest and secured it, then attached the detachable 5-round magazine. Seated behind the gun rest, I aimed and peered through the scope at the arena from the window…
Yep, perfect.
I moved the lever up, down, left, and right, ensuring that the entire arena was covered by the scope. While looking at the ballistics chart, I clicked the scope’s turrets, aligning it for 520 meters. Indeed, humans can’t make instant adjustments of one mil up or two mils down.
If it was just one shot, it would be fine, but the opponent is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. There will likely be multiple shots. When speed matters in aiming, the center of the crosshair is usually the easiest to target. So, if you know the shooting distance, it’s best to ensure your aim hits in the center of the crosshair.
March’s scope is quintessentially Japanese, precise and accurate. Adjusting the turrets puts the reticle right where the calculations say it should be. There’s almost no margin of error.
I won’t extend the gun barrel out the window. Doing so would give away that we’re shooting. It’s better to aim from indoors, a couple meters away from the window.
At the furthest window, Saran sets up a tripod in the same way, mounting a 30x spotting scope. She’s ready and will serve as the observer.
This rifle has a muzzle brake, so if you’re standing directly beside or diagonally behind it when it’s fired, you’ll be caught in a tremendous blast. The muzzle brake redirects the direction of the firing gas and bullets, expelling them diagonally backward. This helps reduce recoil. It also prevents the gun from jumping upwards, so it’s positioned with the muzzle brake facing upwards. This is why I’m asking Saran to keep a safe distance.
Blan is bouncing around, stretching and flexing.
Well, it’s about time, isn’t it?
The clock strikes twelve.
Signaling, Saran and I put on our ear protectors—headphones at first glance. It’s equipment for noise reduction. They’re electronic, blocking out external sound while picking up audio through a microphone. So, we can have a regular conversation, but when it detects a gunshot, it automatically cuts the microphone and blocks the deafening sound. It’s a popular shooting accessory among the wealthy.
Blan covers his ears with both hands.
Click, click, click, click, clack!
The clock’s machinery starts moving.
Boom!
Boom!
Kaboom!
Boom!
Boom!
The clock strikes twelve repeatedly.
We fire a test shot.
Saran gives a thumbs up.
We aimed at the middle of a stone wall on the outskirts of the arena. It’s a symbol resembling the letter “O” with an alphabet-like character carved into it.
Perfect. Even looking through the scope, it’s only off by 5 cm.
The “O” has slightly warped into a ◎, but that’s not a concern.
At 500 meters, this rifle’s grouping is at most a mere dozen centimeters.
It’s more than sufficient against a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Firing these test shots to the rhythm of the clock’s chime is like mimicking the summoned hero who used that bullet. Yeah, it’s essential to incorporate flexible methods from the enemy’s tactics.
Boom!
The twelfth chime rings out, and the clock tower’s machinery room falls silent.
Tick… Tick… Tick…
Only the regular sound of the pendulum fills the air.
Above the arena, a priest, maybe? Someone in a monk’s robe, stands and makes announcements loudly.
Every time he speaks, the crowd cheers loudly, a sound only noticeable when I remove my ear protectors.
“Well then, I’m off.”
Blan waves his hand.
“Best of luck.”
“Thanks.”
With those words, Hero Blanversh vanishes into thin air.
On the ring of the arena, 520 meters away, he appears!
