An active hunter from Hokkaido was thrown into another world
Chapter 84 Farewell to the royal capital
Morning.
“I’m starving!!!”
Quiet down, Ballistes.
Well, I guess there’s no helping it. I’ll make breakfast with Saran.
It’s a special treat. I’ll sauté rice in oil in a large pan, separately sauté chicken and onions, add water, season with saffron and salt, arrange vegetables, cover it, and let it cook.
It’s paella!
It’s a shame there’s no seafood in it, though.
“Mmm, this is delicious!”
Ahahaha. It’s tasty, isn’t it?
Paella can be tricky to get right due to the heat, but I managed to do it well today.
You start by sautéing the raw rice in oil. If you don’t do this, your paella will never turn out right. That’s the trick.
“Hey, you guys I kept you waiting.”
Our guildmaster, Buffalo Bal, has arrived.
Dong, dong, dong…
The clock tower in the capital city chimes. It’s already nine o’clock. A late breakfast, isn’t it?
“We’re finally able to head back… I’ll go get the carriage ready. Someone come with me.”
“Sure thing.”
Ballistes’ vice leader, Mild, casually stands up and heads back to the main gate with Bal.
“Pack up! How long are you going to eat?”
Bartil yells. Ahahaha.
Everyone goes to the water source and washes their own plates. Using a hand-operated pump. It’s great! I’d love to have this at my house too! Maybe I should install it when I add a bathroom.
We clean the frying pan and dishes. And then quickly disassemble the tents.
We roll up the sleeping bags and sheets, stuffing them into the magic bag.
Two horse-drawn guild carriages come out from the main gate.
“Master, what was all that commotion yesterday about?”
They stop the horses, load up the luggage together, and get on the carriage.
“Oh… So, yesterday, they were interrogating that summoner, Keyris, in the back of the church. And well, due to the unruly summoned monster causing the death of many people, he was sentenced to death. Then, apparently, he went crazy and summoned that Dino-Dragon.”
“Why hold the trial in the church?”
I’ve been finding that strange all along. Shouldn’t the country be handling that?
“Well, you see, the church is the organizer of the martial arts tournament. So, they made the church take responsibility.”
I see, they’re avoiding touching this issue at the national level. Cleverly shifting the blame, huh?
“However, summoning something like that is a terrible story, regardless.”
“If you’re going to be executed anyway, you’ll do anything. In the end, that Dino-Dragon even devoured Keyris, the summoner. And the Dino-Dragon rampaged in the cathedral, wreaking havoc before coming out into the city. I don’t know all the details yet, but at least thirty people died because of it.”
Adding disaster upon disaster, it’s the worst, those summoners…
“So, what happened?”
“Yesterday’s martial arts tournament had a winner, Blanversh, or something like that. He came out and single-handedly subjugated it. Truly a hero, as expected.”
“Oh, wow…”
“Well, in the end, we did have some help from the city guards, but the decisive blow was dealt by that guy. Heroes really are something else.”
Well, that’s good. It seems they haven’t figured out anything about me, so I can breathe a sigh of relief.
“That hero guy is saying stuff like, ‘It’s thanks to Team Justice for attacking before me.’ Those guys got wiped out. Well, they can save face now, thanks to that. Justice can still come out of this with some dignity.”
…They got wiped out, huh.
What a bunch of idiots.
Well, I had been feeling oddly targeted by them, so I guess it’s a bit of a relief that there’s less chance of trouble from them in the future.
“How’s the city holding up?”
“It’s a mess of corpses. Citizen corpses, soldier corpses, Justice corpses, and the Dino-Dragon’s corpse. It’s become quite a spectacle for onlookers. Things have collapsed and been destroyed all over the place, there have been fires too. It seems like a hassle to stay here for long. Let’s head back quickly.”
“Oh, I’d like to see that.”
“I know, right?”
“The Dino-Dragon, right? It’s not something you can just let go.”
“I agree.”
“No, no, no!”
Bal-san shouts.
“Get on quickly. We’re heading back!”
Ballistes’ carriage leads the way.
Bal holds the reins from behind.
I sit next to Bal on the coachman’s seat, accompanying as an escort.
“Shin.”
“Yes?”
“Did you do something?”
“…”
“I guess there’s no helping it with you.”
Saying that, Bal-san smiles slyly.
Can he see through things?
“You shot the Dino-Dragon’s leg, didn’t you?”
“Well, yeah. I thought that would be its weak spot.”
“You truly are something. Probably only you and I can understand that wound. The folks in the capital wouldn’t get it.”
“Did you go see the Dino-Dragon?”
“Well, of course. There’s no way I’d miss something like that.”
“You’re quite the character, Bal-san.”
“You’re too much of a goody two-shoes. If you don’t navigate things cleverly, you won’t survive in the future, you know?”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
“After achieving so much glory, it’s a shame that you can’t boast even a single word… What a waste, you guys.”
“I realized it while watching the martial arts tournament. There’s not a single opponent I can defeat. If someone wanted to kill us, they could easily do it. That’s the kind of world this is.”
“Well, that’s true.”
You understand it well, Bal-san.
“Even that Dino-Dragon would have been taken down by the hero without me interfering, right? I can’t be the one standing up front, pointing a gun like that. In a world with heroes like that, there’s no role left for me anymore.”
“I’m in the same boat. That’s the truth.”
“So, I’m done with these things. I’ve learned my lesson the hard way. From now on, we’ll protect the Elf Village, live as we have been, occasionally come to sell fur, and that’s how we’ll carry on.”
“… I see. Well, yeah, that’s not a bad idea. I guess I got carried away a bit. I was thinking I could just make you guys do everything. It’s also my job to train the young ones. Relying on guns won’t leave anything useful for the next generation. We’d end up causing trouble in our old age.”
“That’s right.”
“That’s the truth.”
Ahaha.
When I turned around, Saran was smiling.
I’ll protect my happiness, and as long as I can live in this world, that’s all that matters.
That’s why my adventure has come to an end.
I probably won’t come back to the capital anymore.
Goodbye, capital.
I stood on the coachman’s platform, turned around, and gazed at the receding walls of the capital for a while.
