An active hunter from Hokkaido was thrown into another world
Chapter 82 Catastrophe again
“Yo”
Bal, the Guild Master of Saaplast’s Hunter Guild, has arrived.
It’s reassuring to have him around. It brings a sense of relief.
“So, I guess you guys couldn’t secure lodgings after all. I figured you were probably camping out.”
“Well, yeah.”
“For hunters. Well, I suppose this is fairly common.”
This is the time of the year when the biggest event in the country takes place.
During this period, even at night, the main gate is open, fires are lit, and it’s brightly illuminated. People are bustling back and forth even in the middle of the night. With a vast number of tourists visiting, leaving money in the capital city, it’s like an Olympics of sorts, isn’t it?
“What have you heard about what happened?”
I wonder what happened afterward, really.
“The injured count has gone over a hundred. The number of casualties is still unclear. It’s a major disaster.”
Sitting down casually next to Bartil, Bal receives a cup of tea from Saran.
“The Summoner Keyris has been arrested and restrained. They’re conducting a trial or rather an interrogation at the church. The winner of the tournament is decided to be Blanversh, but both Duke Baldorat and His Majesty the King seem to be deeply affected by this tragedy. So, there won’t be any awards or anything for a while.”
“Whose responsibility do you think it’ll become?”
“That was the talk of the town at the Hunter Guild assembly. Blaming the summoner, accusing Blanversh of letting that thing run amok, saying the opponent holds no responsibility – it was all chaotic nonsense. I got fed up and left midway. Besides, it’s a completely irrelevant discussion for us hunters.”
That’s true.
“Is it okay for you to just leave like that!?”
Vice Leader Mild is surprised.
“Guilds from rural areas like ours aren’t involved in any of this. We won’t even get a chance to discuss selling Mid Dragon meat anymore. Those who consumed it might face some consequences, you know? It’s creepy considering the number of fatalities.”
“Well, it’s probably best for us to leave the capital city quickly and not get tangled up in this pointless mess. It’s not doing any good for any of you to be involved in this. Don’t stick your necks out. Same goes for you, Shin.”
“Why should I stick my neck out?”
“Well, uh, I just had a feeling, that’s all. My bad.”
Saying so, Bal grins mischievously.
“Lately, there’s been talk about a raccoon-headed figure behind these incidents.”
“Don’t say ominous things. We haven’t done anything wrong.”
“True… Everything you guys have done is nothing but conspicuously inappropriate. It’s a shame, but that’s the truth.”
Without hesitation, Bal scoops food from the pot and begins eating.
We’ve also stocked up on bread and such, so feel free to have some.
“I played dumb, but even at the Hunter Assembly, the Raccoon-head issue was subtly brought up. Capturing the Hydra, preventing the assassination of the king, and such.”
Laughter erupts from the members of Ballistes.
“When did you guys manage to pull off something like that?”
“Well, it was kind of a coincidence while we were dealing with pigeons, and things just sort of fell into place like that.”
“A coincidence? You think you can prevent a king’s assassination as a side effect of dealing with pigeons?”
“Is that story for real?”
“Well, um, yeah, it’s true.”
He takes out a Remington M870 from a magical bag.
“Thanks to this, I received the royal seal of approval from His Majesty.”
“Isn’t that the royal emblem! Did you receive a direct bestowal from the king himself?”
“Yes.”
“This is unbelievable.”
Even Bal is taken aback.
“Do you understand the significance of receiving that?”
“Well, for the most part.”
“Your firearm might be confiscated by the government later, you know?”
“That’s not the point. It’s a permission that officially allows firearms to be used in this country. The king’s consent signifies that, as individuals who possess firearms from now on, we won’t be arrested as dangerous figures. It’s a pardon from the king, indicating that he won’t take action against us.”
“… I see. Well, if that’s the case, then it’s a relief.”
“You met the king!”
“Yes.”
“What kind of person… I mean, what kind of character is he?”
Bartil is eager for details.
“I observed him to be a capable and understanding individual. He’s magnanimous. Furthermore, he’s well-informed about us. He chose to overlook several matters and even expressed his gratitude.”
“I see… Well, we also know that the current reign of the king has been fairly benevolent. So, Shin…”
“Were there any discussions about your position or role?”
“There were none. He fully understood our desire to live quietly in the elven village.”
Upon reflection, it’s quite a rare occurrence.
In a feudal society like this, it’s easy to imagine situations where someone like me would be coerced and exploited, used and discarded.
I’ve been quite fortunate, and luck has been on my side.
It’s evident that there were plenty of circumstances where I could have easily met my end…
“Hey there!”
Looking up, Newton and the magician are at the top of the castle walls.
“Come on over! The view is amazing!”
“Oh, the castle walls are open?”
“They’re usually closed, you know. Only during the martial arts tournament period.”
That might raise security concerns…
Well, it’s a peaceful world, and if you’re carrying weapons, you’d be caught by security, of course.
After all, the martial arts tournament is like a festival.
We, along with the members, ascended the stone steps and reached the castle walls.
The security personnel were also in high spirits, smiling as they patrolled. Many people were strolling along the castle walls.
Throughout the city, bonfires were lit here and there, creating a bright atmosphere even at night. It’s like what we would call ‘lighting up’ nowadays.
“Wow, it’s so beautiful…”
Saran is overjoyed.
“Over there! Over there is the recommendation! The cathedral has incredibly beautiful stained glass, so let’s go, let’s go!”
“I agree.”
The magicain and Newton are unusually excited.
It seems to be a popular spot as there are plenty of people gathered.
The road stretches from the cathedral to the main street. The cathedral is visible ahead.
Inside the cathedral, a Mass to honor the heroes continues until night, and the interior is illuminated with bright fires, causing the front stained glass to shimmer and create a beautifully colorful display. This is undoubtedly a sight to behold.
A tale of heroism, the story of the heroes…
The five Demon Lords that appeared in history.
The heroes who defeated them.
It’s incredible. Giant bears, colossal Tyrannosaurus rex, massive eagles, enormous wolves, and… some other colossal creature that’s hard to make out.
Those kinds of beings were causing havoc in the past, huh.
Gooaaaahhhhhhh—
A tremendous sound suddenly echoes.
It reverberates, sending shivers down our spines.
What’s happening?
“What was that sound just now?”
“What’s going on?”
Saran and Bartil both look around, searching their surroundings.
At the front doors of the cathedral, people are running out, their screams piercing the air. They’re dressed in monk’s robes.
Something must have happened inside the cathedral.
Crash!
The stained glass shatters!
Wait… That’s…
Isn’t that a Tyrannosaurus rex?
Its head emerges from the shattered stained glass.
“It’s… it’s a Dino Dragon!”
Crash! Creak! Snap!
Breaking through the stained glass, it emerges onto the main square!
What in the world!
Why is a Tyrannosaurus rex appearing here?
This is a church, you know? The capital city!
How could something like this happen!?
Kaboom!
Suddenly, the magic bag appears right before me!
Could this be…? Is it something related to the goddess!?
While everyone is gazing at the Tyrannosaurus, I discreetly reach into the magic bag, pull out a radio, and step behind everyone to communicate quietly.
“Can you hear me, Nanotesu-san?”
“It’s dire, Nakajima-san! A Tyrannosaurus has appeared!”
“It ‘has appeared’? What’s happening!?”
“You see that summoner guy, right? He was sentenced to death during the trial happening at the back of the church, so he summoned the Tyrannosaurus!”
Oh no… This is terrible.
Whether it’s a threat, an attempt to escape, or an act of vengeance, it’s likely the last resort. And now it’s gone out of control again.
“N-Nakajima-san, can you do something?”
“Even if you ask me that… Is this a demon lord!?”
“No, it’s not! It’s the one that idiot summoner brought over from that dinosaur continent! It’s just a regular, everyday wild Tyrannosaurus!”
Is there even such a thing as a regular or wild Tyrannosaurus?
Anyways, I swiftly tuck the radio into my chest pocket and return inside the castle walls.
It’s turning into a full-blown catastrophe.
The Tyrannosaurus is strutting through the city with an air of ownership, trampling fleeing humans, pinning them down with its feet, and then tearing them apart.
It’s not eating to satisfy its hunger. It’s more like it’s tormenting and toying with living creatures. There’s no heavy thudding of footsteps. Surprisingly, it’s walking quite gracefully.
The security guards are armed with spears, but they’re fleeing as well. Both citizens and soldiers have no choice but to run. This isn’t an opponent you can face with swords and spears.
The soldiers on city defense duty don’t have bows or javelins either.
Even if they had spears, throwing them would leave them defenseless. These aren’t the kind of spears meant to be thrown, so there’s no use.
“Saran, I’m going!”
“No, don’t!”
“Saran!”
Saran looks like she’s on the verge of tears.
“No, Shin! You can’t engage with something like that. Let’s run! This has nothing to do with us! Right, Shin?”
“It’s okay. I can defeat it.”
I nod confidently.
“It’s going to be alright. If it gets too risky, we’ll escape properly. So, let’s go.”
“Let’s go? You’ve got to be kidding me…”
Bartil looks exasperated.
I start sprinting towards the stone steps leading down to the city.
Saran follows me.
No one else is coming along.
Maybe I’m out of my mind to fight against something like that.
But, I have to do this.
Maybe only I can defeat it.
While running, I pull out a Remington M700 from my magic bag.
I also have as much .375 H&H Magnum ammunition as I can carry.
I open the bolt, loading as I run!
