Chapter 40 Something big is happening again.
In the village, there’s a lively buzz of activity as the construction of our two new homes begins.
In Milno’s family home, they are adding a new room, and the log frames are already taking shape. Everyone in the village is lending a hand, as it’s a joyous occasion and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.
“Thank you, Saran-san, for all your efforts,” says Kano-chan, as she arrives with raccoon and fox fur hats in hand. There must be around thirty hats. You’ve really worked hard on these!
“Congratulations, Kano-chan,” I respond.
“Well, I’ve had to wait for ten whole years… It feels a bit late now,” she says with a smile.
I can’t help but wonder how old Kano-chan is. She seems to be older than me. Oh well, Elf’s sense of time is quite different…
As for Saran’s age, I’ve never asked, and I believe it’s better not to know.
“Do you have anything you want, Kano-chan?”
“Yes!”
She handed me a wooden board filled with writing, and it seems like many of the items are overlapping with what Milno-kun had written.
“Well, I actually have Milno-kun’s shopping list too…”
“Show it to me.”
“No, we’ll figure it out here.”
“Just show it to me!!”
While laughing heartily, Saran brought Milno-kun’s shopping list, which was then forcefully taken. Kano-chan was comparing the two lists with wide-open eyes.
“Can I borrow a pen?”
I handed her a quill pen and ink, and she mercilessly crossed out and deleted items from Milno-kun’s list.
Women can be quite something… Looks like Milno-kun is definitely going to be under her thumb.
… It seems the same goes for me.
“Alright, we’re off!”
“Take care!”
“Come back soon, okay? We’ll have the wedding as soon as you’re back! Don’t keep us waiting too long!”
With the villagers, including the village chief, seeing us off, we paddled our canoe, carrying various items like fur and Milno-kun’s dried fruits, heading towards Saaplast after three months.
Splash!
Saran loosened the reins, and the river dolphin, who had become well acquainted with the village, smoothly and leisurely pulled the canoe, crossing the lake.
As we continued downstream, on the second day, we finally arrived at Saaplast. This time, we properly docked at the pier and planned to leave the canoe and the river dolphin in the care of the Merchant Guild. However, the city seemed quite bustling.
Many heavily loaded ships were departing one after another. The city was in an uproar.
“Um… What’s going on?”
I asked one of the sweaty porters, who was busy loading the cargo. He replied angrily, “What’s going on? Everything’s going on! The city is under attack by slimes!”
… It seems that some major event is happening. We arrived at a bad time…
“Get out of the way! Don’t just stay there and block us! Go somewhere else, now!”
Well, if they’re yelling at us like that, there’s no choice but to retreat. The city seems concerning, but maybe we should turn back for now and find another place to pull up the canoe…
“Hey, you with the raccoon heads! Aren’t you the ones with those raccoon hats!!”
It’s one of the people from the Merchant Guild, right? The ones we met when we sold the hydra, perhaps?
We were wearing those infamous raccoon hats, and that gave us away, I suppose.
“You came at the right time! Come here!”
“Um, we couldn’t find a place to park the canoe.”
“Use the dock behind the Guild’s warehouse! Please!”
They earnestly point towards the dock and run off. What’s going on?
Well, I guess there’s no helping it…
“Let’s go, Saran.”
“Alrighty!”
Tsuntsun.
Saran pulls the reins, guiding the river dolphin.
What on earth is happening here?
Slimes, huh? Weren’t they something even a Rank 6 Hunter could defeat?
People call us ‘tanuki-heads’ as soon as we enter the Hunter Guild. It’s Racoon Head, not tanuki-head! When will they ever remember it?
“Oh, you guys came at the perfect time. Seriously, you couldn’t have come at a better time!!”
Saying that, Buffalo Bal, the Guild Master of Saaplast’s Hunter Guild, rushes over.
“What’s going on here?”
“Our idiot hunters decided to mess with a Lyle Slime, and now the town is under attack. Come with me!”
He quickly brings out his horse in front of the Hunter Guild.
“Um, I can’t ride a horse.”
“Again? Seriously, no progress, Shin! Get on the back! Sis, use that one over there!”
And so, with me and Bal riding tandem, Saran takes another horse, and we dash through the chaotic town.
“The crowd at the main gate is getting messy; the gate might break. Can’t you do something, Shin?”
“Slimes can be hunted by Rank 6 Hunters, right?”
“That’s not the issue here!”
We stop our horses in front of the main gate, tying them to the horse posts, and continue on foot.
With a quick wave from Bal, the guards open up the path for us. Truly impressive, Guild Master.
We climb the stone staircase that surrounds the town.
“Look.”
The city wall stands about 3 meters tall, with a walkable width of about 1 meter on top. As we lean out to see the main gate, we are greeted by more than twenty bright red fluorescent slimes sticking to the gate, wriggling and piling up, seemingly ready to climb over the wall at any moment.
“What’s going on?”
“Our pathetic hunters angered a Lyle Slime, and they ran away. But those slimes followed their scent and chased them back here. Right now, the guards are barely holding one back from climbing over, but swords and magic have no effect. We don’t know what to do. Can you help us?”
“Well, I’ll do what I can…”
It’s massive.
The diameter exceeds 4 meters, and it’s about 1 meter in height, a flat hemisphere. It’s translucent, and you can see its core, but it’s protected by a 50 cm thick membrane.
The guards are trying to stab it with their spears, but it just bends and doesn’t get pierced. They’re attacking it in groups, trying to push it back, but it’s only a matter of time.
The iron gate is emitting sizzling smoke. Is it acid?
If left unchecked, it’ll break through.
The slime is quite thick… It doesn’t seem like a backshot will work. I wonder if a rifle can penetrate to its core.
I look around.
A tall building with a rooftop… It overlooks the main gate…
“What’s that building?”
“The customs office.”
“Take me to the rooftop.”
“Understood!”
The three of us quickly descend the stone staircase and run towards the customs office.
“It’s Bal from the Hunter Guild! We need to use your rooftop!”
Bal shouts loudly, and the customs officials make way.
In the midst of the commotion, the customs personnel are also running for safety.
We ascend the stairs and open the door to the rooftop.
Sprinting towards the fence, we could see the slimes attempting to climb over the gate.
Peering down from a 50-meter vantage point!
I swiftly took out the Remington M700 and lined up .308 Winchester rounds from the magic bag. Handing the binoculars to Saran, I cocked the bolt, loading four rounds, aimed, and…
“Even if I hit them, I’m not sure it’ll take them down!”
“Give it a shot!”
BOOM!
A resounding blast echoed through the air!
Bush!
After retracting the scope, I observed the slime. The hole from the shot seemed to seal itself back up.
“It didn’t reach the core!”
Saran shouted.
Is it futile, then?
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
A rapid three-round burst in the same spot!
“No good! It’s sealing up!”
This is bad.
.308 rounds are just not powerful enough!
“…Guess it’s hopeless. I thought you guys could handle it, but…”
Bal-san sounded disappointed.
“Bal-san.”
“Yeah?”
“Do you have a hundred gold coins?”
“Why do you need money at a time like this? This isn’t the right moment!”
“I’m dead serious!”
“If I had it, would that help?”
“I promise to return it later! Please, hurry!”
With a serious expression, I convinced Bal-san, and he rushed down from the rooftop.
